So apparently Edge magazine gave The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings 06/10

Maybe he is a fanboy (although I doubt it though as he says he doesnt own the game yet), but he still has a point about Edge being sh*t....

Too many gamers are obsessed with looking for validation in reviews. That point was made in the latest episode of Gamers With Jobs Conference Call, and I agree. Even if a game is technically perfect, that doesn't mean that it objectively deserves a perfect score. A game review should represent an evaluation of the game's qualities, and as such there should ideally be a range of opinions depending on the views and priorities of the reviewers.

As for The Witcher 2, I still haven't finished it (I'm in Part II), but I'm very satisfied with how it's turned out. It isn't perfect, but it succeeds where it counts; in creating a compelling world and story.

Did EDGE do it justice? I have absolutely no idea, since I haven't read the review. A score alone simply isn't enough to go on.

not true.
Yeah, apologies for the trollish remark. It's just we had threads here on the Escapist review of the game (saying the site has an agenda against it), the Destructoid review, and now this one. And those weren't even bad reviews. But three people who make threads do not represent an entire fanbase.

Because of the Witcher 2's shitty sales, they're afraid that they won't get another game like this.
I'm planning on getting it when it comes to the 360, though I don't know if that makes you feel better or worse.

what a fail statement, you know you have to accually play through the bloody game to rate it for all you know after 20 minutes the rest of the game is you just walking down one corridor. Hint some games are fun at first but get monotinous

Um, so what?

If the reviews of Witcher 2 have suggested one thing to me, it's that all the reviews of it will be unusually subjective. Some people are enthralled by the depth of the story, the long-running ramifications of major decisions, the art style, and the robustness of the world; others are turned off by things like the unforgiving difficulty and the sometimes slower pace. Review scores will more-or-less inevitably be slanted by how much people are willing to forgive the latter in the name of the outstanding former; most good reviews, both higher- and lower-scored, have acknowledged that.

I don't think it's anything to get worked up about.

why are we still arguing, we've all come to the conclusion that reviewers are human beings and therefore have opinions, What more is there to debate?
or are we now complaning about a system (reviews) that we only use part of (the arbatrary number) and then complain about the system as a whole, your opinon of this game is formed from 20 minutes of gameplay, your opinion of the review of said game is formed from less than a second of the review (basicly the amount of time it took for you to read a number), in short your mad at 2% of a review because it does not coincide with the 2% of a game you played.
wow this thread is all kinds of stupid, here's an idea: since you are incabable of comprehending that other people my have different opinions, and that reviews comprise of more than a score, mabey you should stop reading reviews.
I read this whole thread before commenting.

but since i doubt you are cabable of reading my reasoning i'll just give your thread of score:

5/10 "worse than Witcher 2"

They didn't like Witcher 2. Big fucking deal. Maybe they're not biased towards Nintendo and Microsoft, maybe some of those games are better than the Witcher 2? In their oponion, of course. Also, your basing them being biased towards an eintire console, based of one game.
Final point, you can still be a fan-boy even if you own every console (for example, most people are MS/Sony fan-boys, and some of them have owned a Wii at some point.)

I don't think a gamer should have widespread appeal to every game coming out there.By that I mean I want my RPGs merciless like they have always been.Getting a build wrong used to mean you have to start over. What the hell is this shit about judging a niche game on it's widespread appeal.

If I had a hardcore RPG,PC only title to review I'd give to a person who played the fuck out of Baldurs Gate,Planescape:Torment and every other niche RPG out there instead of a Mario fan who plays Halo online and played Baldurs Gate once for the story cause it got recommended for the story.Simple as that.I would be bitching about the score but then I remembered I should ***** about the often poor choice of people picking up the review.

As an example I'd send the new Thief title to Yahtzee but I wouldn't for the life of me send him the Witcher for very very obvious reasons.I mean cmon we all know Yahtzee.

To people bitching about the OP playing only 20 minutes of the game:This is a title you'll know you have to play or just drop in the first 20 minutes.Playing for hours will not make you like it if you didn't at that point.I got murdered 10 times in the first 20 minutes because I chose the wrong chapter but I knew I had to play this game to the end.If you don't like titles such as these you shouldn't pick it up anyway. Not every game is for everyone.

It did 400k in 1 week. With an upcoming Xbox title and once prices go down a bit everybody will want a DRM free TW2 from GoG.It isn't selling badly. But it's annoying to see a deep breath of fresh air gets mediocre scores when sequels get top scores from the same reviewer.Sorry to be a bumfucked fanboy because I don't see the fairness in it all.Reviews were supposed to be objective.

Having played this game for only 20 mins at a friends house halfway through the story
Dude! I have played games for 20 mins and thought holy shit this is awesome!!!

Then after 30 mins thought.... erm.... why am I still playing this? Where's the off button!

I am of course exaggerating, like you no doubt have. i'm sorry but your argument is flawed from the get go.

When it comes down to it, the enjoyment of games is down to opinion. I've played games that have been reviewed as shit hot (Assassins creed 2 as an example) but found them dull and unenjoyable. This doesn't mean they are good or bad games.

Hell C&C3 tiberium wars didn't get particularly good reviews but I love it! In fact I'm going to play it now!

End of th day, you like what you like.

Although from what I've heard saying witcher 2 is bad can be comparible to saying Half life 2 is a big pile of wank!!! (which i do not think is true)

Simple solution: if you don't like how the magazine reviews games or think they have too strong of a bias, stop reading their reviews. I shouldn't even have to say this.

Then again, all evidence suggests you didn't bother reading the review in the first place. Instead, you just looked at the score and decided that your astounding 20 minutes of experience made you a better expert on the game.
THIS.... ONE MILLION TIMES THIS!!!!!

Before anyone starts crying about people having different opinions, I just want to say that I respect a contrasting opinion. But this right here is just stupid. Having played this game for only 20 mins at a friends house halfway through the story I can honestly say its amazing. Every other magazine/reviewer has given this game amazing scores. Barack Obama recieved this game as a gift and yet this Edge gave it a 06/10. I now officially know that they are just a buch of Nintendo and X-box nerds.

Here is a prediction of their scores for upcoming games

The next Mario game - (10/10)
Halo 4-(9/10)
Gears 3-(9/10)
Uncharted 3-(09/10)
Resistance 3-(04/10)
Anything Nintendo-(x>8/10)
Next Metal Gear-(09/10)-Because it's not a PS3 exclusive anymore. If it was then (07/10)

Yeah, I went that extra mile on this one.
I see. So because you don't like their opinion of The Witcher 2, you're declaring that all flagship titles coming out in the next year are going to be shit? Except, curiously, Resistance 3.

Look, if you genuinely enjoyed the game, then why should you care about one mediocre review? Instead, you're frothing at the mouth, insulting any and all games that aren't PC exclusive. Newsflash: that's a textbook fanboy reaction.

The magazine is only good for the editorials, their reviews are crap. Anyway, any one review is worthless, the only possible "guide" is Metascore but even that is not enough, you must balance it with what you yourself like about what as been revealed.

I'm inclined to side with PS3 bias on a fundamental point: the controller.

I don't know if it is enough to knock off 10% on average but I've been playing both 360 and PS3, now don't get me wrong the PS3 is overall a much better system but the 360 controller IS slightly nicer to use. It's not one major thing like analogue stick position (I couldn't care about that) it's all the little things. It's not the shape of the triggers so much as their resistance, and the firmness of the thumbsticks... just a bit more the stiffness I prefer on 360.

I'm even coming round to 360's d-pad, now I am no longer trying to use it as if a PS1/2/3 style d-pad.

Overall I prefer my PS3 for:
-More exclusives
-those exclusives more interesting (Uncharted>Gears)
-Free online
-Handheld integration (PSP, soon PSV)
-Move (Better than Wii, more relevant than kinect)

Though I don't think the PS3 is really more powerful than a 360, not overall. But Sony's ace in the hole is their investment in great developers pushing their hardware so much able to make games as great as uncharted.

Edge aren't that cruel to PS3, they gave Killzone 2 an 8/10 which for Edge and how that game wasn't really all that great, that is something.

I HAVE to belive the OP is trolling. No one could actually say, with a straight face:

"I know everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but theirs is OBVIOUSLY stupid because I disagree with them. As further evidence, I offer these hypothetical scores I think they will award to games that haven't came out yet. I REST MY CASE."

OP, if you're a troll: Try harder. This is very uncreative. If you aren't: Grow the fuck up.

Off topic but she's not a racist, just an insensitive idiot who thinks "Well if black people can get away with using the N word, why can't I?".

Real racists are a bit more insidious than that.

Of the 3 gaming magazines i read, Edge has always given the fairest and most unbiased reviews, 5 for them is an average game (as it should be) 6 is above average, it's usually only unique or particularly brilliant games that get high scores.

The Witcher 2 is nothing special, and the fact that you only played for 20 minutes half way through means that you missed the god awful slow pace in the beginning
