[, transgender people have to live in more hell because others might give them a hard time? You're coming at this all wrong. You're making innocent people suffer and have to hide who they are because other people are assholes. Turn it around - stop the assholes. Won't be easy, but it's a lot better than mandating people lie to themselves. If someone feels they are female and wants to wear the female uniform, who are you to stop them? Shall we lock everyone's doors next, so people won't get mugged on the street?

Fight the crime. Don't make life shitty for the victims.

It isn't as simple as that: You cannot totally stamp out bullying. Any school you mention that can squash bullying is likely to have more money than other schools. So is it okay for kids to go in designer clothing if it alienates them from other students? Should the poor kid have to wear his tracksuits also resulting in bullying?

One uniform should be enforced. No school can survive if it let's every single person "express themselves" and maybe students would "express" their distaste for other students wearing dresses.

Suffer and hide? Saturdays and Sundays the kid can knock himself out. But if the goth kids can't wear spikes and the rich kids can't wear the latest fashion what makes you think trans people should have it any different?

Wait, the entire school has a rule against hats? The fuck?
/shakes head.
Well, this is pretty cut and dry in his favor. Absolutely no reason to suspend someone for this.

I'm not agreeing with the school, but I'm not buying his and his mom's bullshit about it being a moral crusade. Fucking attention whores.
Regardless of the reason for why he wore the dress, why must a guy be a "genderqueer" before it's ok to wear a dress? Why can't a straight guy wear whatever he likes? As long as it's not offensive, disturbing, or disruptive (Like wearing a bikini to work/school, or walking naked in the street), then people should have the right to wear whatever they want.

Living in the UK, I'm not surprised by this at all. Most schools smack you with the stick of conformism. In my school you're not even allowed two tones in your hair, let alone a different colour. If a student came in with visibly different tones, they'd be told to leave until they washed out.

It's seriously that bad. I might come off as a bit insensitive here, but I'm used to that kind of treatment by my so called "superiors" so...Yeah, the school is kinda wrong for doing that, but at the same time, why not just wear the heels at the weekend if it was part of a bet?
Yeah, they kicked me out of a lesson, because I called bullshit on a teacher being unable to teach, and when they didn't let me out, I just slept instead, its bullshit.
Still they have a go at anyone who doesn't look "nice" or "presentable". It's like they are my parents or something.

OT: Lol, I applaud him. He's fucking hilarious for doing that, although the school suspending him is stupid. Real stupid. If he was under the influence of something, fine. But he wasn't. So this is stupid.

Sadly (as much as I wish it were otherwsie) the old saying 'might makes right' is painfully true, the arseholes and the bullies in school have the might and all you can do is work around them and try to cope most of the time (bullying and discrimination will never be eradicated, it's simply impossible, it's a nice dream to have but that's all it will ever be).

You try and 'give freedom of expression' to transgendered or gender confused people and you have to give just as much freedom of expression to the people who hate you (otherwise you're the ones who are 'discriminating and not allowing others to express themselves'), sometimes you do have to sacrifice some personal freedoms in the name of making things tolerable for everyone (yeah, you can't wear what you want to but at least you don't have people chucking stones at you, count your blessings).

When I went to school most people just went to school and tried to learn. We weren't there to make political statements, even with bets. What the hell is wrong with people these days?

Suspension is a bit harsh, though I don't think there's a problem with the school sending him home. An appropriate response would have been for him to go home and return dressed sensibly. It doesn't matter what the student wants, if he wishes to attend that school he needs to abide their rules. I think it's a very american thing to believe that one can do anything because of the first ammendment.

The student is well within his rights to dress how he likes outside of his school, but in school he has to abide the rules or they are well within their rights to punish him. His choice is to exercise his rights to dress how he likes and go to a different school that allows it, or dress according to the rules. I have no issue with enforcing discipline and desired behaviour.

This is essentially what i was thinking. Its a looong thread so i won't go and try and find the other quote i want, but people need to realize that 'sexuality' and 'gender roles' are two separate things. We aren't talking about gay rights, transgender rights or anything like that. Where the kid lies on the sexuality spectrum is irrelevant here. Ask any straight male cross-dressers if they think this is about being gay. The fact is that there are more straight cross-dressers in the world than there are true transsexuals.

What matters is that here we have a kid who chose to challenge gender roles as they pertain to clothing. The kid acts like its no big deal. Well, i say good for him, because its not a big deal. If any other people have a easy time of it because others have gone before, well good.

HOWEVER, the problem I have with this particular situation is this:

a) the kid has been in trouble for similar things before. He should have known this would cause an issue. (not that it should have)
b) We don't know what the schools position was on this, or the kids history. The issues a few people have brought up about disruption in the classroom are valid. Really, we don't know if this kid is constantly trying to push the teachers by doing ridiculous things. He has been suspended before, is this kid just a firestarter?

One uniform, yes. If someone wants to wear part of that uniform that you've decided is female, they should eb able to.

I find your attitude... disgusting. This idea that others get to decide for you what gender you have to abide by is an aged relic of a homophobic past. Forcing people to wear what you feel is "best for them" is a step backwards. Sheesh. I know an Asian kid who got picked on a fair bit. Should we have just locked hin behind bars so no one picked on him? No. What do you do? Tell the bullies to knock it off or fuck off.

A couple'a friends of mine were told to stay out of lessons because they were wearing the female PE kit as part of a fund raiser back when I was in school.

I think it's utterly moronic. It's like those stupid rules where you can't wear nail polish or whatever because it 'disrupts people's learning'. Yeah, it does; especially if you had a teacher like my old maths teacher who would literally go on half the lesson about how makeup is bad and get everyone wearing it to take it off, while hypocritically plastering her own makeup on. We never learned anything in that lesson.

But I digress. It's stupid, but it's something that will probably stand.

I fail to see how clothing on any gender is disruptive to class, yeah the immature fuckheads will make fun but the people who want to fucking learn WILL LEARN, the mother should sue the shit outta these assholes on principal alone( i say this because my own personal retribution on theses idiots would be to shatter every bone in their bodies with a 20LB sledge)

Well THATS retarded. A school kid here got suspended for a week for a Chlorine bomb 4 years ago at my Hhgh school which could have killed hundreds, but someone wearing a dress is a 6 month->3day? Is it me or are the "Old" principles of today's public schools so ...bat-shit dumb and un-educated with today's life?

If a school has a code of conduct and a dress code, then that dress code is to be respected. Then again, you only need to respect what's actually in the dress code. If it doesn't specifically say: "Dresses are not to be worn by boys", then by all means, a boy should be allowed a dress. He's not hurting anyone, so he should be free to choose what to wear.

I think he sounds like an awesome kid.

The parenting generation fell back a good few steps in knowledge is all. No one goes to school to learn anymore they go to see the people they know and talk with them mainly.
