That game you bought as an afterthought that totally rocks.

I strolled down to my local video game store roughly 12 years ago to look at the used bin and saw Xenogears lying around. It was steep; $40, being an import and all. I wasn't immediately taken in by the anime style, but I decided to give it a go, seeing as it was by the same people who had made Final Fantasy VI & VII, two of my favourite games at the time. I brought it home, put in the first disc and... nothing. Little did I know that my European machine wasn't compatible with an american disc. With the SNES I understood it, since the cartridges were physically incompatible with the slot. But a CD? Pfft... I marched back, hellfire blazing in my eyes. The dude behind the counter apologised for not warning me (gracious, huh?) and offered to chip my machine as compensation.

Not only did Xenogears turn out to be the best gaming experience I've EVER had, but suddenly I could also play imported games. Sweeeeeet...

Mercenaries 2. I had the first game and I saw the second at a friend's place and thought it looked neat, so I picked it up. It's one of my favourite games, and I've played it for over 50 hours.

There was another game similar to BlazBlu, but it was a medieval style fighting game. It was quite enjoyable... if I could only remember the name.

Yes, I bought The Suffering despite knowing very little about it on impulse and now I've played through it nearly three times.

The only impulse buy ive ever made was geist for the gamecube. I know not to many people seem to like it but I found it to be incredibly fun. was well worth the 18 or so dollars i paid for it.
I'm with you, that game was great.

I bought FarCry 1 off of Steam because, and I quote, "Meh, everyone else says its good. Why not?"

Didn't expect it to vomit pure awesome all over the place.

I've gone on about this game many *many* times before but I bought Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines for $20 bucks (AUS) when it first came out as a platinum buy on PC. Never has $20 been so well spent, I've literally lost count of the times I've replayed it because every time the community releases a new fix or patch for it I feel compelled to replay the entire thing to see what difference the changes make. Plus Laughing Jack is possibly the best pirate/vampire ever!

Someone tell me how Lost Odyssey for the 360 is, for some reason it feels like another surprise.
Really good game IMO. I have yet to finish it, but the stories you can collect, well, a good few nearly brought me to tears... It's a turn-based jRPG by the original creator of Final Fantasy. Highly recommended! A lot of your party is actually immortal as part of the story, and the world is steampunk. I REALLY hope they make Lost Odyssey into a series! I have to restart this game sometime...

As for impulse games, Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers on Wii. Grabbed it on name alone. GREAT hack 'n slash! Yeah it's waggle, but it's really good, and you're doing EXACTLY as the title said, and you can't not love that. Plus it has unlockable costumes and characters!

I also recommend Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone on XBOX. Fun hack 'n slash by the same team behind the critically acclaimed Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Takes place in the great Forgotten Realms setting, story by R.A. Salvatore, and features the voice of Patrick Stewart. And yes, it's 360 compatible.

I also highly recommend Sacred 2 on 360, for a fun and funny Diablo experience. Also features the pwoer metal band Blind Guardian!

Max Payne 2 for PC when it was two bucks on Steam. Boy, I am glad I did so.

Orange Box, a month before its release. My sheer number of hats, and my platinum says I don't regret it.

The original Neverwinter Nights, saw it at a garage sale (along with the level builder guide) for 5$. EPIC. WIN.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. I had played the first game at a friend's house when he rented it. I didn't find it particularly enthralling, so I was skeptical when I was looking for games to buy with my step-dad and he, being a huge fan of westerns, pointed out Bound in Blood. It was fairly cheap so I decided I might as well give it a shot, and it was worth it -- turned out to be quite an awesome game!

Left 4 Dead. Didn't know anything about it, but $20 was burning a hole in my pocket.
