I know a lesbian who often uses gay as an insult to other people, and calling annoying things gay. While it really bothers me, I think she thinks she's being ironic or something.

I just say Damn.

Drop the groceries. "Damn"

Forget to unpack the entire grocery cart leaving some in the parking lot of the store I just left and not noticing until I get home. "God Fucking Dammit!"

Don't know if anyone has brought this up yet, but there was an episode of South Park where the word 'fag' is used to describe obnoxious Harley riders. Words constantly change meanings and have a variety of connotations, I've used words like 'gay', 'fag', 'fuck' and 'shit' in completely innocuous and arbritrary contexts that have no resemblence to their original meaning and indeed don't really make sense in the way they're used, its just something to yell out in anger directed at no one in particulat. I don't think that being bisexual gives me any leeway with the term, but it should be pretty obvious to most people when it is and isn't being used in a derogatory manner.

On this day I proclaim that every bad thing shall hence forth be proclaimed "heterosexual"!

Example 1:

"You heterosexual vending machine, you stole my money!"

Example 2:

"Oh, man, that girl looks so hot in that dress."
"What are you, some kind of hetero?"

Ah, but doesn't she know irony is lost when you do it too often? Silly girl.

Rarely say that anymore, because most of the time it has nothing to do with people who are gay. Unless we're talking about my cousin because he's VERY Gay and happily so. Right on man.

One thing I'm trying to sub out actually is God, because I don't believe in that stuff so I'd rather just remove it from my vocabulary entirely.
I like your point about the word "God". I use it as well, and usage of it somehow affirms the existence of the thing that you refer to. In that way, and that way only, I'd rather use the word "gay" than the word "God".
Problem is, I can't think of what to replace it. I don't really favor 'gosh' or 'golly' in things to replace it. Maybe I'll just say SEGA dammit to show how serious I take my stupidity.

I REALLY appreciated that post OP! Maybe i like to be offended but i actually clicked on this thread while saying to myself "well lets see how offensive this thread is..." haha

The thing is, its not an innocent turn of phrase. Its an incredibly hurtful insult depending on who hears it regardless of the speakers intention. It makes one sound like a homophobic jerk when said. Its essentially equating something that is 'really bad' with being gay. Say it like this: 'that's so black' or 'thats so mexican'. Get it now? haha

I usually say 'Oh fer fuck sake!' or something like that when something is really stupid. :)

Words don't matter, meaning and context do.
If you're not a homophobe then you're not a homophobe, so it doesn't matter.
Words always matter. Your person feelings on gay people don't matter, if you're saying "that's gay", you're not only associating being gay with whatever the bad thing you're describing it as, you're also saying to everyone else that it's ok to describe this group of people negatively, and that it's ok to use language like that.
If that was true, every black person who uses the N-word is racist...

Without wishing to sound patronizing to them, I'm a lot better spoken than most of my friends, and I hear them using language like that all the time. However, it doesn't bother me because their language is just an insight into how they've been brought up, and I know that underneath it all none of them are actually homophobic. For one thing, I'm bi, and I've never had any abuse from them (beyond occasional jokes, but the key word there being 'jokes')
When the N-word is used it's only used in two instances: When someone is being honestly racist or when someone who is black uses it for whatever (generally) positive reason.

If gay was simply used as an insulting name for a man who has sex with another man (like queer or fag), this would be a valid point. But when the word is taken to mean anything bad at all, it's a whole different ballpark. People aren't using gay just to insult people. They're using it as a substitute for the word 'bad'. Taking a label (that's generally positive or just neutral) for a substantial amount of people and turning it into something that means bad, forces the new connotation on to the group of people (as they share that label).
It's idiotic. As idiotic as if Asian suddenly became the term for bad. "That's Asian!"
It's like I said with my friends though, the language they use is nothing more than phrases copied from their parents and other peers. They're not dissecting what it actually means when they apply X word to Y context, it's almost just a reflex reaction, and it doesn't bother me because I know that if somebody ever genuinely had a problem with my sexuality they would be the first guys to back me up.

i personally prefer 'SON OF A *****', 'YOU ************!' and 'SHIT ON A STICK!'

question: i know it's ok for a gay person to say 'that's gay', but what a bisexual like myself? can i still use it? or do i have to stick with 'that's bisexual'?

A lot of gays use that kind of term in the same way blacks call each other the N word where i live. I disagree, but its a 'taking it back thing' calling each other dykes or fairys or saying 'thats so gay' or whatever. Like i said though, personally, i disagree with it.

But truth is, its used as an insult so often, no one would bat an eye, in fact i've heard it defended more than once with "oh everyone says that, it doesn't mean anything!". To which i say "If everyone jumped off a bridge..."
thats (in my opinion) the problem with it.

When something pisses me off I just normally swear. Occasionally I get creative and start saying compound swears.
