Star Ocean: Till the End of Time on Playstation 2. It may not be the latest and/or the greatest in the series (by fan recollection), but some of my fondest memories are playing the game on a 32" Sony Trinitron while enjoying a bottle of Merlot.

The last I played was Chrono Cross, which I find to be one of the best games I've had the priviledge of playing. It could be in my top five.

I never could get a taste for Merlot. Zinfandel, yes, but then again, Zinfandel is basically fruit punch with a slight zing.

Most recent? Persona 4.

Truthfully I have no real problem with MOST JRPGs, though I prefer western ones.

The sad thing is that there are so few Western RPGs produced, and those that are, are typically dumbed down "action RPGs". "Drakensang" being a ray of light in an otherwise bleak field.

I consider Fallout 3, and Mass Effect to be great Action RPGs, but such games aren't quite the same. :)

Despiting coming to hear his review every week I'm sort of the Anti-Yahtzee.

Oh yes, and "The World Ends With You" is awesome. I didn't get too far with it since I haven't had much call to use my portable, but as far as I played it was very cool.

I am not sure where people get the idea Kingdom Hearts is an RPG from. I played the first one and it's basically a fighting platformer with what amounts to selectable powerups. This is not to say it's bad, just that I don't consider it even an action RPG since it's almost entirely twitch based, and can involve some fairly precisian jumping, and manuvering when fighting the bosses and such (based on your speed and reflexs) is far more important than stats. You can't for example level up to mega-god status, ignore all strategy entirely, blow through the bosses invulnerable frames, and pwn him with one shot.

But then again admittedly in most RPGs they level cap you so you can't do that kind of thing anymore. Except for Nippon Ichi Strategy RPGS like Disgaea where half the point seems to be how badly you can break the game. They give you a system and then encourage you to abuse it.

Etna really needs her own game.

They did have Etna mode on the portable versions of Disgaea, but not sure if you'd count that as her own game.

She really does though. I mean, they let a prinny have it's own game, why not Etna?

I hate all you people who have played Persona 4 before me, because where I live they don't have it in any of the stores, and it would take about 6 weeks for the mail to reach me.

But I will say that Persona 3:FES is still all kinds of awesome.

Final Fantasy 6 on my DS about a year or so back.

I'm not big on jrpg's, and frankly, every modern one I've tried has just been like smashing my face against a brick wall; so joyless it's painful.

But hey, that's just me.

The last one I played and liked? Probably Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age, because I love that game. There's been more recent ones that were okay/good, but none that I've played through more than twice, whereas I've played through Golden Sun more times than I care to admit.
I absolutely love Golden Sun, while some games lose their charm and become extremely repetitive when played through again, I found playing Golden Sun entertaining even though I played it over 5 times.

I reccommend it highly to anyone that loves Jrpg's because if you haven't played it you really missed out on a flawless diamond.

The Last Remnant for PC. Haven't been this much into a JRPG since FF X.
How is it? I played the demo and liked it but it's lack of really any story has left me on the sidelines. Gameplay was great at least, just need some assurance on that other crucial half.

Anyways I've been playing some oldies lately on my PSP.
-Star Ocean: First Departure
-Star Ocean: Second Evolution
-Valkyrie Profile Lenneth
-FFT: WoL
-Crisis Core
-Jeanne D'arc

I am still trying to find bloody Disegea for the thing so I can prep up for Disegea 2. Also patiently awaiting Crimson Gem Saga, as anything made by Atlus is win, just wish they would make another Ogre Battle game.

Story is a bit lacking, but I have only played about 6 hours and that was just leveling and doing side missions. It seems to be picking up now though after the boring intro stuff and its pretty interesting to me at least.

I am in the vast minority, but my favorite Jrpg (I haven't played one in a while so I'm going back) is, imnsho the most underrated jrpg out there and that is Final Fantasy IX. With its unique setting, cartoony graphics, great throwback meets innovation battle system and leveling system, and FANTASTIC plot it was one of the highlight experiences for me. I played through the game soup to nuts twice at prolly 40 hours a run through. Its a shame they don't make em like that anymore. Wow I loathe myself for saying that.
I barely got to play FF IX, but the tiny bit (maybe 2 hours) I did get to play, I loved. I liked the look and the combat was not horribly boring. Cannot say anything about the plot, though...

Persona 4 was the newest.

Exit Fate (freeware, even) was the latest. It's basically a North American version of Suikoden.
