Also, Fox news is the most ignorant thing I've ever seen, and I win this thread.
God damn, he's right. He does win the thread. :( SIGH!

OT: I'd say a youtube video that was posted on these forums (that I can't seem to find right now) that has the stereotype of "stupid Americans" right in its spotlight. A man interviews several americans, and asks them basic you-should-know-this questions, and we marvel in their ignorant responses. If you know the video, you should help me out, and post it.

Well, I hate to bring this up again, and I don't agree with the stereotype that All Americans are stupid, but this is just so worth watching:

Wow. THATS... thats something else. I'm struggling to decide which is worse, people who don't know how many sides a triangle hav, the idea the news-reporter is GIVING them answers (new zealand bit) or that the idea they were showing the SMART ones.

And im quater American. ='(

A friend of mine thought Communists and immigrants were one and the same. But I guess that's excusable, seeing as both groups are maligned by the status quo. And we were about 13 at the time.

Damn Ninjas i was gonna say fox news, oh well it is pretty obvious.

I would probably go with how the other day at school (im a HS freshman) i was in my Psychology class and one of the students actually asked our teacher "Mr. *****, when is now?" I realize he probably meant what time it is, but it just sounded so ungodly stupid.

A few of us were having a religious debate once and some guy I used to work with said "without the bible, how would world leaders know right from wrong?"

The Tea Party. 'Nuff said.
Have they actually even done anything yet, or are they just disgracing the name of the revolutionaries?
they have compared obama to hitler more times then i can count...
you can try to explain that hitler was a white supremacist who tried to rid the world of all "impurities" and obama is trying to make health care accessible to all social classes...but then they will just say you are an elitist. not that they would know what that means
So... they're complete idiots and disgracing the name of the Boston Tea Party? Wow...

I have a story, though it may not be as funny as some, and is only a slight bit of ignorance, but it still seemed pretty funny at the time.

I have a friend who was dating this girl once. First girl he actually met in person, and said she was a freak in bed. So obviously, I sat with wide-eye anticipation at what stories he was going to tell... *skips to the only slightly ignorant part* ...He told me she has had sex with several different guys, and was a necrophiliac. I just stared at him, with a kind of confused, horrified face, till he asked what. I than said, "She has sex with dead bodied!?" He then looked at me confused, and said he never said that. I pointed out he said necrophiliac, and he said yeah, a person that has alot of sexual intercourse... I then corrected him by saying that necrophilia was the act of have sex with a deceased body, Nymphomania was have lots of sex. He then faced palmed before telling me that he already told some guys on XBL that his new GF was a necro...

I managed to prevent myself from laughing at his misfortune until I left his place...

Now, I'm not a very religious person, but around the time the previous Pope died it was brought up in conversation about how he had passed away and the following question was..

"Isn't that the stuff in orange juice?"

I facepalm'd and laughed so hard.

You, me, same page.

I can think if plenty of times where dumb stuff has happened. For instance I was buying something and the total was $15.03 and I gave the clerk $20.03 - so I could a $5 back - and the clerk asked me what I was doing and gave me back my $0.03 and proceeded to give me $4.97 in change. That was an aggravating exchange. But, I don't equate that kind of stuff with ignorance. I equate ignorance with people ignoring facts, when presented, because it suits the better - for example racism, bigotry, etc...

In terms of pure ignorance though it's hard to beat some American flags, some old white people, some motorized scooters, and some "Government out of my Medicare!" signs.

Pretty much anything VenomFangX on Youtube ever said...
I see your VenomFangX and raise you a Nephilimfree. Good lord that man is ignorant.

OT: I was going to say that discussing religion with anyone is a lesson in ignorance but that would be inflammatory and in poor taste. I get why people believe and don't want to take that away from them.

However discussing atheism with others is really a lesson in ignorance. So many creationists have an extremely horrid view of what atheism is and trying to tell them its not is like trying to fight an army of bears with a butter knife... Its possible but your not getting out of it unscathed.

Case in point: the aforementioned VenomFangX and Nephilimfree.

On youtube today this Nintendo fanboy insisted the SNES version of Doom is comparable to the PC version, despite it being at a lower resolution, displayed in a smaller window, no save/password system, enemies won't fight eachother/cant sneak up on them, there's controller delay.

He insists that I'm a PC fanboy because I've said the SNES version isn't good, I figure that's just because it's a abysmal version and there's at least 5 versions today you can get on various platforms to play that are better/easier to get/ better to recommend to someone. Back in the day was it amazing this was done?

Yes absolutely but would you reccomend someone this version? Just tell them to go out and spend 60 on a SNES and 15-20 dollars on the game? ...or go to steam for 1-10 dollars.

Yes I'm TOTALLY a fanboy:

To everyone saying that the OP stories aren't cases of ignorance, well you'd be wrong. According to the Oxford American Dictionary, ignorance is the lack of information. So to all statement which were ignorant to the definition of ignorance it would be safe to say the OP stories were cases of ignorance though not stupidity.
Thanks. I was going to point that out myself at some stage due to the alarming number of people saying that, but I just got on like 5 minutes ago, and you did it for me.

My friend just asked me what a yard was. I told her it was a unit of measurement. She then said she knew that (it is, to be fair, obvious) but was in fact asking how many feet it was.

I had to confess I didn't know. God damn it, metric system!

Haha that's genius!

I think the worst case of this is when some guy on a TV quiz got asked if the earth revolved around the Earth or the other way round. He had no clue and guessed. And guessed wrong. The look the presenter had when she had to tell the guy he was out was priceless. It was painful.

I think the constant misunderstanding of how evolution works is the worst case of ignorance.

I don't think i've met or heard of an evolution denier understanding evolution now I think about it

Hm. Not really a big deal, but a kid in my German class attempted to convince me that the majority of Arabs in the world are Christian. Being an Arabic major, I kindly informed him that the majority of Arabs are Muslim. He refused to believe me. My Arabic professor had a good laugh when I told him.

People asking me if Muslims believe in God also makes me just stare.

Oh, and a significant portion of my friends not knowing where New Zealand is and being confused when I laughed at them was another...but I come from a fairly uneducated area of the country.

My driver's ed class:
Dumb blond girl points at the word 'misdemeanor' on a quiz and asks how to say it. And her friend says "ummmm idk lol. maybe miss-demon-err" (thats how she pronounced it).
OR
Same class. Same girl. The teacher says that if you smell like alcohol a cop can arrest/search you. And she says "HERP DERP BUT THEY DON'T HAVE A WARRANT!" And I turn around and say: "They can arrest you if they have probable cause." And she says: "I don't know what that means" So I had to say 'reason to believe' instead.
