Probably Yossarian from Catch-22. The character has an interesting development, made even more intriguing by the out of sequence storytelling.
Yes, I'd agree with that. Well written, nice backstory, he's consistent, and he's polite when he's killing people!ThatStrangeDude said:John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. 'Nuff said.
Atmos Dualtiy nailed it - what I want is people who feel like actual people, and seem like they're real people who just happen to not exist. People who, when they're feeling something, clearly are in possession of other emotions, which they're just not showing at the moment. I don't want anybody to say it's this-or-that-character because he kills people in cool ways, I want them to pick this-or-that-character because he (or she) is fascinating even when he's not killing people in cool ways.the antithesis said:Perhaps, but the OP did ask for three dimensional characters, a term one often hears. I was wondering what he meant by that. I assume he didn't mean 3D rendered CGI.Atmos Duality said:This isn't directed at me, but if I had to hazard a guess, I would say he was hoping to stem the deluge of (as an example) "Sephiroth. Because he's a BADASS KILLING MACHINE!"the antithesis said:You might want to define what you mean by "best."
How does one determine if a character is well written?
What does three dimensional in terms of a fictional character mean?
It's slippery slope though; everyone's favorite character is going to be purely subjective anyway.
That's my guess.
That is actually hilarious. Kamina and the Dai Lantern Corps. Who the hell do you think they are?!?BoosterGold said:Kamina...The Green Lantern

He's well defined on personality
Funny as hell
Both the good guy and the comedic guy
Drives the most badass robot ever made
Sweet looking beard
He's 22 and still playing games, working on cars, and eating junk food.
EDIT: Lemme get a pic of him
If not, I also pick Master Chief or Garrus Vakarian
I've got to read that series someday. I've been more and more eager to read it lately, because lately I've heard it praised in ways that indicated it's good.Toaster Hunter said:Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell. Actually, Pretty much every character from The Song of Ice and Fire series.
That's a good point. I may have been a little strong on the whole Gary Stu thing. I like to see that as more something that no one could have changed though, and while a Gary Stu might have overcome it, I think that's more a commentary by Harper Lee than anything else.Queen Michael said:Excuse me, but...Mana Fiend said:A part of me is screaming Atticus Finch from 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.
That said, he is somewhat of a Mary Sue (can't remember the male equivilant). In the most important scene in the book he fails completely with what he's trying to do, and poor Tom Robinson gets sentenced to prison. So to me he's no Gary Stu.
so much sense in one sentence its unbelivable...tellmeimaninja said:Garrus Vakarian.
See, the fact that he's a Turian alone disqualifies everyone else.
