Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell. Actually, Pretty much every character from The Song of Ice and Fire series.
I've got to read that series someday. I've been more and more eager to read it lately, because lately I've heard it praised in ways that indicated it's good.
They aren't kidding. Every single "chapter" character (it will make sense once you read the book, trust me) is very well characterized. They have motivations, they have goals. They act like human beings.
The series always presents a set of moods, which can and will swing wildly, and the author isn't afraid to put any given character into a seemingly hopeless scenario. Without saying who or why, people (including important named characters) do die in this series, and it's hard to say who given the dark tone present in much of the book (a little too dark for too long at times though).

You care about the characters; something of a rarity in today's stock/stereotype-driven media.

A pity we will never see the end of the series though. George R.R. Martin hasn't uttered a word about it in a long time.

Now, I didn't choose any of the characters in that series for this topic because I really don't want to spoil anything (many of my favorite characters die, sadly), and there are too many good characters to connect with. Jon Snow is one that I will single out as being the most likable though (with the exception of a certain golden haired dwarf, who is badass in so many ways).

I can't choose between these three:

The Doctor
Sam Starfall
The Mad God Sheogorath

The Doctor is a genuine hero, who acts ethically (as opposed to the billions of hero's who don't, and think the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the universe). He actually regrets killing things (you should see him when he takes down Cybermen) and occasionally plays the diplomat between species. (One of his companions, Jack Harkness, might be considered a pretty good fictional character as well. At one time, he killed his own grandson to save the world. Many an action hero wouldn't have done that.)

Sam starfall because there are numerous similarities with my personality. So this is more of a subjective opinion.

Lord Sheogorath because he is an original person. His dialogs are original, his ideas are original, his true nature is unexpected...He is fine.

Damn straight, anyone who has not picked up and read Enders Game is in store for a treat. Get it soon!

My 2nd pick would be Arthur Dent from Douglas Adams "Hitchhikers" series.

Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Well rounded interesting character. Badass Jedi who doesn't rely on being 'the chosen one'. I honestly feel like all 6 star wars movies were more chronicling how he stopped the Sith than about Anakin or Luke.
You may have hated the original trilogy but lets face it, it was awesome seeing Obi-Wan in his prime. That bit at the end of the 3rd movie where he messes up Anakin and has that monologue? That was kickass.
Awesome character.

My fave fictional character would have to be Honor Harrington. She's on the top of everyone's "don't fuck with" list. She manages to stay smart without being arrogant, tough while maintaining her humanity, in command without becoming a bully and finally she maintains an air femininity even while she's applying boot to ass.

The only blemish is that she's a command officer, but everybody's gotta have some flaws.

Second is Commander Shepard. You don't mess with the Shep. If you kill her, she'll just get resurrected and come back with a bigger ship, better guns and some kick ass scars.

If you want to go for "best," you should probably have said Satan. He's just as fictional, but his death toll is considerably less than that of God :D

OT: Harry Haller (Hesse's Steppenwolf). Talk about character transformation...

I'd go with Satan over God... Satan is the scapegoat for all God's evilness, and even the bible said that Satan couldn't do anything without the consent from God. I feel sorry for the guy...
Wow, talk about completely misunderstanding what's written there.

But this isn't a flame war, so I don't think I'll elaborate in the bounds of this thread.

OT: Hmmm... I think I'll settle on Alastair from DA:O. He's quite different from most characters I've seen or played, and I love his sense of humor.

Hmm.. Of the characters I can think of right now, it may be Tom Natsworthy from the Mortal Engines books. I have currently only read the first one, but he's a good character. He's very far from the most badass character I know of, but his character development is great, and Reeve really made me like the character. Hester Shaw, Tom's companion in the same book, is also a great character, but doesn't have quite as much development as Tom does. Great book, that.

I think the whole cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender is great too (the cartoon), with the sole exception of Azula's two henchmen (forgot their names, but only those two characters are uninteresting). If this thread is not about the single best fictional character, then I'd clearly say the combined cast of characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender. I love that series.
