I'm 18 and British and have fired air rifles on multiple occasions, an old long-barrel rifle, an old-style handgun and a military issue L-98 rifle, as well as recieving formal training with the L-98. It should be said that I am not in the military and first fired a gun (the handgun using blanks) when I was 12, but have also fired live ammunition ever since. This is because I was a member of the Combined Cadet Force (like military school but done as an after-school activity for about 2 hours per week instead), so I was taught how to use the weapons safely and responsibly and only ever fired on a proper firing range. I have no desire to shoot anyone save in video games, and I think public ownership of a gun should be either banned (yes, even in the US) or put under extreme restriction. I suppose the Swiss idea isn't that bad, but there have been cases in the US and the UK of soldiers who have left the army or are sometimes even still on active service who have gone mental, taken a gun (which they know how to use) and killed people in cold blood. Ideally no-one should have a gun anyway, but they are there so need to be restricted and controlled sufficiently.

P.S. I pray that Kukul (above) is not British, otherwise this country is gonna be even worse than it already is (if that's possible)

Many people who live around me own guns, but they take all the precautions with them as they should. They keep them locked up when not in use, unloaded, safety on, trigger locks, ammo hidden. They have also taken hunters safety and have gone hunting before and know how to proplerly and safely use a gun. The problem is, as many people have stated, are the morons that get their hands on guns. Just my two cents.

I'm impartial, I just giggled to myself when I found out one town in Texas, it is law that the man of the house owns a gun, and this town happens to have a very, very, very low crime rate, mainly because you know the owner has a gun.

I like the Switzerland idea, very good

i think if you have all of the legal paperwork and rubbish and you can prove your not an idiot, i see no reason for a person not to own a gun to hunting or shooting clay pidgeons or targets in general

I'm with you on the Swiss way of thinking. This country (UK) would be much less liberal and maybe have a backbone if national service was still mandatory

I have a gun so not being able to have one doesn't bother me. I do think the "right to bear arms" is ridiculous though today as when the bill of rights was written and it was necessary to carry guns for large amounts of people, nowadays it is not.

Well gun ownership is legal in the UK however the ownership of handguns and full automatics are illegal apart from that firearms must be licenced and I believe must be stored sepperate from the ammo also illegal in public.
I don't see any need to own a gun

sorry ime tired of being descriminated against oh guns can be collectables(i personally own a moisn nagant 1943 used by the soviet union in ww2 so ha they arent killing machins like most euro and aussies think)
God, you are thick. Can't understand half what you have written. Maybe instead of spending so much time on gun awareness, you will take an english class. But what can one expect from Ggeorge W. Bush (a biggest hillbilly ever).
that is mean(that really is mean)dont you think ive tried i worked on it for 7 years and i still cant write dont you think its hard on me enough no one can read when i write and you dont have to rub salt in the wounds im nice enough not to say anything about you(until the next thing)

and yes i am very smart you ignerant unwashed foreiner go back to your castle youre turnips need tinding i was pointing out how i turned a tool of war into a decoration that is also a peice of history that dosent need to be destroyd as you so think
Wait, you're crying because he took a shot at you for your spelling and call him mean; fair enough, but you have called at least two people stupid in this thread, nilcypher and Ploppy, and then call andromeda23 an "ignerant unwashed foreiner" and tell him to "go back to your castle youre turnips need tinding".

Ever heard of people in glass houses?
i wouldnt have said that if he hadent said that stuff did you try to learn the basic period for seven years and when everything you write somebody has to call you out and rub salt

plus i called them stupid when they read my writing and dont eve understand what im saying
Word to the wise Rads, calling moderators stupid is rarely a smart move.

At this juncture, I'd like to echo the point that others have made about the importance of spelling and punctuation. With no offence meant, you cannot get annoyed at people misunderstanding your posts when they are in the state that they are. If English wasn't your first language, I could understand, but you've said yourself that you're American, so you have no excuse.

Also, xenophobic comments are not appropriate. I don't care if you were provoked or not. This is your only warning.

I think the only reason to own a gun is for hunting. There is NO GOOD REASON to own one of these.

Not really. Guns hold very little attraction here apart from as tools for those who need them, like farmers.

We find your obsession with them a little creepy, actually.
Yep, im with him. Awesome country, lovely people, strange obsession with medication and guns though. When i was over there every second advert was for some sort of pill. Would still rather live in the US though :D

No. If someone breaks into your house the element of surprise and a tazer are more effective than a gun.
So you want to entrust your life to a device that can be rendered ineffective by my ten dollar furry sweatshirt?
So you want to entrust your prison sentence to your ability to not hit vital parts when shooting at somebody through their furry sweatshirt?
Lold hard bud, lold real hard. I regularly shoot with every firearm I own. Now this doesn't make me some elite OPERATOR but I'd be willing to bet that in the tight quarters of my house I could level my shotgun upon the intruders chest. Edit: I'm tired. When someone is breaking into my home I don't care about laws or what his rights are. I'm going to send him back out the way he came in only with a few more ounces of lead.
OPERATOR, huh?

Do we OPERATE in the same OPERATIONAL area?

that's ironic because that gun is used predominately for hunting.

Do you wish you all had the legal authority to own a firearm?
Can you spell 'ignorant'?

You can own firearms in (probably) every country in the world. Some countries are stricter than others, one of the worst being the UK where you can't own semi-automatics. Some of the best are Switzerland and the Czech Republic, where you can own fully automatics with a regular license, and in Belgium you can own full-autos with a collectors license but can't shoot them.

Here in Hungary you can have semi-autos with a sporting or self defense license, hunters only get repeaters.

If it was ever considered to let people own firearms in the UK or EU generally, then I would like to see compulsory military service being a requirement first.
That's ridiculous. You don't have to serve in any armed force to learn how to use a gun. I don't know about other countries but here in Hungary the government makes sure you know how to handle a weapon before they give you your license.
