Homophobia sometimes stems from ones own fear/suspicion of being gay oneself. A repression kinda thing.

I fail at explain (and grammar, probably) :(
Like saying that you hate animals and love steak because secretly you wish to suckle the teat of a cow as its calf and allow wave after milky wave of sexual ecstasy to overflow in your mouth like a fountain of life and nutrition?

Because I totally know what you mean if so.
I... what? I am baffled.
We should hang out.

Homophobes are mostly "christians," which in America means arbitrary bigotry, hatred, and generally being stuck in the past at the cost of human progress. Or just closed-minded people, oftentimes both.

Wouldn't know for sure, moral fabric of America burning, respect your fellow man (when I'm not angry, of course) liberal that I am.

but it is generally true. if you ask a hard christian they will say its because god condemns it.
Since a majority of my friends are Christian, I can say both of these things are true. I, on the other hand, am a Christian that supports Gay rights and marriage.
Surely by supporting gay marriage and rights and being christian you are willingly allowing people to go to hell?

Please dont take this the wrong way, I'm not intending to start a flame war here, but if I'm not mistaken, gay people will, from a christian point of view, all be going to hell along with the atheists etc.???
Either the sixth or seventh ring of hell, I forget which, is devoted to several groups, one of which is sodomites. So yes.

Actually, it may have been the 5th ring. Been forever since I read that thing...
So if one of the groups is sodomites, where would you go if you just did oral? Hmm?

On topic, religious reasons probably just turned into a strong cultural thing that gets passed down through families.

Dante's Inferno?
*touches nose with finger*
I started reading that in sixth form, it was pretty heavy going but in the end I managed it. I cant remember much now as that was 2/3 yrs ago.

Edit.

I think you missed out on the joke I was gonna tell (but razer17 clearly beat me to it). Say what he wrote in a... well... stereotypical gay voice. "Being gay is, like... TOOOOTALLY against GOOOOOD and stuff. (But I still look FAAAAAAAABulous!)" Get it now? Yeah, I know, a joke is never funny once it's been explained...

Anyhoo, no, I don't think it's Christianity that's the cause. It was written that way for a reason, namely out of fear of that which is different, and that which we do not understand. It's easier for stupid people to hate and fear what they don't understand, than to open their minds to it, learn to understand it, and then no longer fear it, and thus not have a need to hate it. I say "stupid" people rather than "ignorant", because if they were ignorant, they could still open their minds and learn. Stupid people are ignorant, yes, but given a chance to change this, they will always choose to stay that way.

You do realise "Dantes Inferno" isn't actually a written guide to christians, right? More like biblical fan-fiction...yeah, thats about the easiest way to think about it.

ANYWHO, I believe the christian thing, if I remember rightly, boils down to the interpretation of the passage about "Not spilling seed onto the ground" - if you read it one way, its saying "wasting sperm == go to hell (literally)", in the other way is "Disobey God == go to hell". Given the sheer volume of sperm produced by even a single human testicle (apparently 1 'round' is enough to impregnant all the women in Europe), I'd personally go with the second as it seems unlikely God would want us to be constantly 'using our sperm productively'.

Not that I'm a christian or nowt, but I remember hearing that.

Because I like being a smug, arrogant, bastard I'll just say that "Homophobia" is technically an incorrect term to refer to people who fear same sex relations, as technically, "Homophobia" is fear of things being the same. "Homo", same. "Phobia", fear of.

A more accurate word would be, "Homosexualphobe".

What disgusts you so much about homosexuality, or gay marriage or even gay rights?
Femininity.

Men must be dominant. Submissive behavior is unsightly and unnatural. Sexual acts performed on women, such as licking, fingering, and breast-fondling are manly things that big strong men do, so lesbians are in the clear. Fellatio is something that weak people do to the strong, and the other way around for anal sex.

That's all.

Edit: That's the actual root cause I see in American Culture, anyway. I think equal rights for gays is something that should be a non-issue; already in place and accepted.

That is a great answer, as much as I am for same sex rights I have always blamed it on the bible belt people, but I had never taken this into consideration.

Ugh, to all you posters who wonder why someone has a prejudice: When will you understand that some people just hate things for no apparent reason? Also, maybe they have justified opinions in their own worlds. I just don't get why so many people expect everyone to act in a way they themselves find rational. Your reasonings don't always work for everyone because they are personal beliefs.

Did anyone think to consider that maybe you're the crazy ones? I'm not saying homosexuality is something I condemn, but please try to look at things from both perspectives.

And to that guy in the beginning of this thread who said that most homophobes are Christians: nice spelling, clearly you are a highly educated individual to be passing judgement on others as such, and homophobes extend far past those religious boundaries. My guess would be that the Middle East is the most homophobic culture in the world, and that's not a predominantly Christian area.
So you just think we should accept that people hate a certain group of people for no reason apart from the fact that the group of people are different and had been from birth.

People can't rationally hate something for no reason because it goes against being rational, thats not just my opinion, its fact.
Besides, i'd prefer not to be able to spell than to be a bigoted asshole.

Why must just men be dominant? A woman have just as much right to be dominant. Okay, we're not talking rights here, but still, the only reason that it's believed that men are more dominant than women, is cause the idiots of the pasts thought; "Hey, were bigger and stronger than women, so we should be dominating, while they do the dishes.", and this lead to oppression. Just cause we can be dominating, why should we? Can't women be dominating, and can't men be feminine? And besides, we left being natural a long time ago.
Right, just like women have a right to vote but we've only just recently allowed it.

Just because something is morally correct by our standards doesn't mean it's what's happening or is currently held as objective truth.

In short, women to attempt to be dominant and powerful will be seen with a general disgust by the populace as nagging, overbearing she-devils with an axe to grind against men. Why else would they upset the natural order of things?
There's a difference between dominant and pyschocotic/nagging/etc.

Same as there is a difference between dominant 'powerful' guys and jerks/jocks/arseholes.

I do think you're partly right though.

Women generally lean towards submissive.
Men generally lean towards dominant.

HOWEVER, there are people of both sexes on the other side, and people who like both roles.

Its like saying "Right handers are the natural order of things!" - another the term "natural order" makes me wince as it implies a pattern of control and rules that grossly oversimplify things and don't fully accept that the rules we see are emergent, not inheritant to the system.

And you think I didn't?!

Just becuase there is a reason and another perspective does not mean it's a good reason or a clear undistorted perspective.

/S
That was my point. You can't arbitrarily pick what is or is not a good reason.

It's easy to shift the blame on Middle Eastern when they obviously have more important things to worry about, like survival. Yes, it's plain wrong to marginalize the Christians communities for holding true to their beliefs, same goes for trying to shift the blame on some other group.
I wasn't shifting blame at all. I know that they have more important things to worry about. All I was saying was that it's not just Christians who have a prejudice against homosexuals.

It is very disgusting. I don't understand why anyone would want to be gay, other than curiosity, which is often very betraying. I digusts me to think about homos having sex *shudders*. I am Christian, but the reason I condemn it is because it is disturbing and nasty and... and... you get my point. Its disgusting.
