while i applaud capcom's decision to delve into dante's younger years i just hate the way he looks, he looks to emo (i hate emos, they fuel the hate that keeps me warm at night- that and queen latifah).
I honestly don't think he looks emo. He looks like a brit punk kind of guy.
maybe if they combines something along the lines of nero mixed with this new dante (just aesthetically) dante would be awesome.
So basically, mix the new dante with old dante. Face it, Nero was pretty much a clone of dante with a fancy(and noobish) arm and no sense of humor.
i love the new direction for the game i just hate the design. im sure the game will still kick-ass but i still want to look kick-ass as well
Honestly, some of the fighting in the trailer does look kick-ass. I don't mean from a gameplay style, I mean from the art direction.

I think this will be fine. As for those complaining about the black hair, check out dante in that trailer after he has his freak-out during a fight. His hair is turning white. White hair is probably the sign of a half-demon in their world, he just hasn't accessed his full demon power just yet.

Alright, I knoew you are all so very pissed off about Dante's new look and the game, and everything. But the game hasn't come out yet, so please don't knock it.

And don't yell at me for not being a fan, because I'm a major DMC fanatic: I have all the books, beaten DMD mode on all games but 4, and watch the anime all the time. I spent many days looking for DMC5 info, and at first, I was very saddened and upset about the change, but looking at it now, it's not so bad.

It may be because I am into the whole punk look, or because I was beginning to lose a little love for Dante when they kicked him out of the spotlight in four and made him seem like a mentor and random add-in.

I like this new, hard ass, punky Dante. And until I have played the game I refuse to ***** and whine and beg for the old Dante back, because I have seen people do this only to look like idiots when they enjoy the game. I am only saying that this game looks cool, and at least they kept Dante's bad assedness. They could have made him a pussy that didn't know how to use a bread knife, let alone a morphing sword.

Plus, change wasn't so bad: They obviously ran out of ideas. They weren't even taking thigns from Dante's Inferno (the 700 year old book, not the game) anymore. They were pulling shit out of their asses now. So this new thing may be just what Devil May Cry needed.

EDIT: I added the Dante's Inferno thing, because it was the basis for many of the characters and ideas for the original Devil May Cry games.
I truly hope they don't back down on this just to make the fans happy. I'm really looking forward to this reboot.

Some questions asked to the Capcom devs, with answers. Well, sort of...

So wrapping up the questions are

1. Is the new story got nothing to do with the old storyline? If so why would capcom make such a decision?

2. Are any of the characters we have grown accustomed to through playing the games and watching the anime and reading the books going to be in the game?
I have to ask for your patience... the answer to your first question will give you all a better understanding, but we're not going to answer that yet.

The game is still very far away timewise and it's too soon to share everything just yet. For now, just know it's coming. Feel free to speculate (which you all are), but know that there is ultimately a logic to this, even if it doesn't seem so to you at the moment.
From this and the earlier responses, it does look like they had intended for us to wtf at the trailer, so let's just wait and see.

I for one really dig the direction they're going in with the series. While I love the output from Japan, they tend to give us some really flamboyant and over the top characters. It can be fun, it can also be tiresome. For me the new Dante is like going from Gary Glitter to Darby Crash. Needed some fresh blood.

And to all the folks knocking Ninja Theory, why? Did you honestly hate Heavenly Sword that much? If so, keep in mind that you're in the minority on that point. The game did pretty well with the critics and the sales. I for one dug it, despite you know QTEs which need to die (I only feel the need to say this because of most gamers compulsions to state things as fact. Like "Heaveny Sword sucked" as if it's common accepted knowledge).

No.

I mean, I get the whole trying to do something new, but what I don't think you understand is that they also changed his personality.

Watch the trailer. What's the first thing you see him do? Stare at the camera. In an angsty way. Next we see him... smoking? Since when does Dante smoke? Okay... Then he puts the thing out in the face of some monster. The entire time he's got this ":|" look on his face, like he's having a bad day. Now, he takes care of the rest of them fine. Although he keeps that "I'm not having a good day" expression on his face. Then at the end, he finally cracks a smile.

So, since when has that been his personality? At all? Never.

Okay, now, beyond that, his entire face has changed. He doesn't even look like the same person. So, it's not just his shitty outfit, it's not just his fucked up hair, it's not just the personality, or his mopey expression, it's the whole damn thing! Let's be honest, Dante MADE the DMC games. I doubt I would've found any of them fun if we were playing as this punk the entire time.

Now, it could be that the gameplay will be great... but I doubt it. Didn't a lot of people think Heavenly Swords was basically a God of War ripoff? And whats that other game they made? I've never even heard of it. As for the story? The trailer speaks VOLUMES about what they're going to do with it. If they were stupid enough to screw up the character like that, do you really think they're going to make an interesting story out of it?

I mean, I will wait to pass final judgement, but for now, Ninja Theory isn't getting any of my money, and I'm going to complain about it.

I mean, this seems akin to shitty fanfiction that you see all over DeviantArt. The only difference is that this is big budget shitty fanfiction. <_<

EDIT: The three things they got right in the trailer.

1. The weapon. Looks kinda' cool. Will have to wait to see.

2. "WHAT. IS. YOUR. NAME?"

3. The music.

So, I will admit they got the sound down, and they showed off the weapon well, but the character is still screwed to hell, and he is what the games were all about. I mean, there have been successful innovations in character design. This is NOT one of them. I love Old Snake in MGS4. I loved the new Raiden in MGS4 as well. Ethan Thomas in Condemned 2 was way better. Leon Kennedy in RE4. Then there are ones I could stand, but disliked like Chris Redfield in RE5. But this? No. I can't stand for this.

FIFA prequel. You put the game in, and it's 1174. You control an unruly mob trying to kick a pig's bladder onto a hill.

Awesome? Maybe. Is it a FIFA game? Fuck, no!

I laughed my arse off when i saw that trailer. If a shit ton of people get upset when a guy who's only been in one game and not many people care about, just grows his hair; what is the reaction going to be when one of the most iconic figures in all of gaming, who's been around for almost a decade, been the main guy in 4 games, has numerous cameos cashing in on his popularity; gets a total makeover?

Did these guys learn nothing from history?

This. Funniest thing I've read all day and I've been reading some Terry Pratchett.

Would everybody please stop referring to this new Dante look as punk, please? It's punk in the same way that Good Charlotte are punk, or Panic At The Disco are punk.

Unless you mean punk in the original sense - the word actually comes from prison slang for the little dude that gets rammed up the poop shoot by a larger inmate. Punk originally meant prison *****.

Maybe that's why the word punk is the most overused word in this whole thread?

Honestly though I don't much care for this reboot. It seems like a shallow cash in. Give the new Dante a mass appeal by having him do what every other generic, 'bad ass' anti hero does (smoking, looking pissed off, gravelly voice etc) to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, and slap on the DMC name just so you can squeeze some money out of fans as well.

I don't think it'll work though, the fans are already pissed off and really they're the only people that'd play this sort of game in the first place. I know everybody wants to capture some that sweet 13 - 16 twilight money, but there are better ways of doing it. Like how about making this game, but naming the character something else and naming the game something like, I don't know, 'Soul Of Death' or some other cliche title. That way they're tapping that younger market and drawing in the new fans that they want, without reconfiguring an already existing franchise.

That being said I'm reserving judgement on the game until I see some gameplay. If the gameplay looks cool then by all means I'll try this out. It's hard to form a fully realised opinion from a 2 minute video of some cutscenes. The gameplay might yet blow our minds. I'm willing to reserve judgement until I've seen more (I don't want to be lumped in there with the whiney people, heaven's no!) but I'm not optimistic.

As long as the game explains how this scene kid becomes the Dante people love, I see no problem.

Really? Then why am I seeing many mentions of the word's even older usage as a synonym for "prostitute"?

Because you should wait until after the release of the gamme to criticize something the devs. could fix pre-release?

Hey, fanboy, the other sheep are leaving without you.
Who knows if anything even needs to be fixed? We haven't seen any gameplay; and yes, I realize most of the anger is over his new look, but it isn't the original Dante; This is a reboot. A remake of a series so Ninja Theory can put their own spin on shit.

And he also isn't emo. But we call him punk looking because of his look similar to those of the punk music era. Or at least I am. I'm not calling him a "punk kid".

What?

People don't like the look of the new (young) Dante.

They should say this before it is released.

...

Once again - what?
I just don't think the look is all people should be basing this game off of. I see comments like "omg this guy is emo i hate emo kids and their poetry and this game will be stoopid." Ignorant shit like that. I know he looks nothing like the original Dante, and I could care less if people complain enough to get the look changed, but to ***** about the entire game in general as if they know the future of it already based on one small trailer and a new look, they should just wait before passing final judgment.

"Ohh Emm Gee!! It isn't exactly like I remembered it! How dare they change a perfect series into something fresh! And don't even get me started on the dumb gameplay that I haven't even seen yet!"

This is all that I see when I hear a rant about a game where we haven't seen gameplay yet. This is just another developers different take on the series and fans are acting like it is the end of the world! Also, how many of you complained about cel shaded Wind Walker the turned around to enjoy it once it came out?

I am not saying that the game will be good. Just wait until you see actually gameplay to ***** complain.
