I think we can assume the multiplayer will be nothing new here. It's probably the first-person story on which this game will turn. It's not something they can brush off as a fictional event like the Modern Warfare games, or a lot of the plots from WW2 shooters. This was something real and contentious and Treyarch can't go with the popular formula of "Enemies = Evil (e.g. Nazi's, Terrorists) Americans = Heroes". The Veitnam war had no good guys or bad guys and everybody know's it. I wouldn't be surpirsed if Treyarch has you playing both sides so you get an idea that neither side was clear of war guilt.

Anyway, that's my convoluted speciulation done. I think it's a step in the right direction for Treyarch and I'm looking forward to hearing more about it.

If you ask me, any game set in vietnam should be more story driven than the CoD WAW set up where you just play through campaign missions. That style of game just doesn't work for vietnam.
There really isn't a style of game that works for Vietnam because the only games about Vietnam (unless you count Metal Gear 3, if I'm not mistaken) have been horrible flops.

Vietnam, in general, always leaves a sour taste in everybodys mouth. Not only did the US loose the war, but it was an unnecessary war that resulted in atrocities committed by both sides, including borderline-sanctioned killing of civilians by the US military.

Making a game out of that will be a challenge. Half in terms of gameplay, half in terms of content.

From the article:

...and takes particular influence from classic movies Apocalypse Now and Platoon.
This angers me. Why not take 'particular' influence from, you know, the war itself? There are plenty of first-hand accounts and war footage out there to avoid the embellishing of Hollywood for production reasons. I remember hearing some IW employee mention that while COD4's campaign was meant to be a realistic depiction of modern warfare, they made MW2's to be 'cinematic'. Which did you like more?
the more realistic COD4 was better

OT: I just hope they do the guys who died some justice but not some ultra flag waver.
Exactly.

Its gonna be interesting to see how they handle the controversial aspects though.

Sidenote: Maybe I'm just a monster, but does anyone else want to see actual people in the game? Like hearing a rumor about Admiral McCain's son's plane being shot down, or coming across Kerry in the jungle? It'd be weird.
It would be realistic. Both McCain and Kerry made the news during the war (for different reasons, of course) and both were filmed in the process.

Treyarch... it'll be "oh kay" I think.

WaW was good but it jsut felt like it was another game hanging off the coat-tails of it's bigger brother; IW.

Fuck political messages, story, and dedicated servers. If I don't have the oppurtunity to call down napalm upon my foes, I'm not buying it.

gee they better add a crawl movement opition , because the tunnel rats will need it and if they do it true to the conflict , airstrikes may not always be available and just think agent orange and naphalm drops... yeah jungle warfare won't be easy and the campers will be in the trees

Objective 1: Take convoy from point A to point B

Objective 2: Be assualted by guerrilas

Objective 3: Burn their homes to the ground

Well, it sounds like it will be alright.

Just recently read an article confirming the speculation; looks like treyarch is going into 'Nam for the latest installment in the CoD Franchise.
Thoughts?

I think it'll be interesting to go from WWII to Modern Warfare to somewhat-modern warfare. Sure, the Vietnam war still had AKs, M16s and M60s so it won't be completely like going back to the stone age as many have assumed. Not to mention the first M16 version (often referred to as the "Mattel 16" for it's flimsy design) will be interesting; I hope they make it accurately suckish. From documentaries I've seen, apparently American troops HATED the first M16.

And online. I can imagine it being fairly balanced; we'll still see plenty of stuff from MW like weapons and such. Killstreaks could range from Blackhawk gunners to Guerrilla attacks?
And for the record, this is all speculation.
(No CoD h8 plz)

The only problem the original M16 had was its reliability which was horrendous. I'm not saying that's not a serious problem, but considering very few games have weapon malfunction, it will probably be a very useful weapon in game.

Why is Treyarch trying something new when they couldn't even get WWII right after so many attempts?

Hmm it sounds like it has a lot of potential but i think the develepers are going to have to slow the pace of game down quiet a bit. Sneaking auround and ambushing marines as the VC sounds like alot of fun.

Taking influence from Apocalpyse Now and Platoon? Is it too much for me to assume that Treyarch will try to pull off a political statement in the single-player campaign?

I really hope they try. This is a theatre of war that really hasn't been looked at much - if at all - in gaming. The design is going to be tough, but if Treyarch pull it off and give the single-player the attention that it deserves, then it just might be time for me to buy something that Treyarch make.

Oh good, the thread hasn't gotten too stupid yet. I suppose I can find gather up the energy to be guardedly optimistic about this. Kids, and liberal arts majors, please remember that the Communists lost far more battles than they won, and the VC had effectively destroyed themselves [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viet_Cong#Tet_offensive] by the end of 1968, leaving the rest of the fight to the PAVN. The major battles with the PAVN offer much fertile ground for single play campaigns. And then there's the simple fact that playing as a Huey door gunner, or an AH-1 gunner, sounds like a lot of fun. And there could be an AC-47 mission...
As much as I'd like to see something respectful and accurate done with material like the Ia Drang or Hamburger Hill, I'd be just as interested in playing Australian or ARVN missions. The Easter Offensive of 1972 is a pretty obvious choice.

Have to agree- if the M16 is implemented it'll have to be with 20 round mags and poor reliability. It would be interesting to see how many players favor the M14 instead.

Great post, sir. I for one like your idea about the M16 vs the M14.

Damn, I was hoping for Korea, but this should be good too.
The same here. I want a game set in Korea, I don't think that conflict has been touched by game developers.

Oh, I want to be the first to call a situation where Agent Orange will be greatly involved.
Bit late my friend, already called it..only my bet is it'll be napalm to avoid the Agent Orange controversy.

Also, I can't wait to spout off Top Gun, A Team, and Black Hawk Down references in the online multiplayer. :>
Well Treyarch has to find a way to top off No Russian's controversy, so why not agent orange.
