I am AMAZED at how many people think that X wasn't a massive pile of turd. Its story was NOTHING on the previous three games, had a basic cast and the dialogue was shockingly written (for a change) and acted (bad move in the first place).

VII, VIII and IX are the best. IX is THE best, VIII would have tied with it if you could actually name all the characters.

XII is my personal favorite, since I dislike random encounters, and I love both its combat and its Gambit system, so much in fact that since I played it I find it impossible to go back and replay games like Lost Odyssey, I can't stand them. XII is also probably the most hardcore single player RPG I have ever played. The story is passable and easy, but the optional content is where the true game is. There is an enormous amounts of sidequests to do, and if you complete everything you will be able to unlock some of the longest, hardest and most satisfying boss fights you have ever seen in gaming (one of them took me about 11 hours to beat).
XII is my "secret" favorite, I just love amount of work that went into making the world feel real and believable for once, with tons of history, culture and realistic politics infused into it. I just loved it, and to me story oozed from every pore of the world, even if the core narrative wasn't everything it could have been.

I thought IX was great and it's definately my favorite, but VII has a good plot and some nice characters too so I guess I'd have to say that comes in second along with VI

XII

I'm a lazy bastard, and it can play itself. In the words of PA, It's the gaming equivalent of masturbation.

I've played through FF7 several times, and I find it to be one of the best games of all time. If you can live with the somewhat outdated graphics (after 30 minutes of gameplay, you will likely stop noticing), I highly recommend it.

You should also try FF9 if you haven't already. It would be wrong to call it a better game than FF7, but I still LIKE it more!

(I should probably mention, however, that I never really cared for FF8.)

Great: VIII, V
Good: VII, VI
Meh: IV, III
Awful: X, XII

Well those are the ones I played at least.

X had awful voice acting, boring combat and the worst upgrade system ever. Come on, sphere grid? Really?

Edit: Also, goddamn blitzball

HOW DARE YOU BAD MOUTH FFX!!! jk. It will always be my favorite but a big part of why I like it so much is probably because it was the first FF I ever completely played through. I never played IX but the characters seem much less likable than those in X. And I thought VII was alright but nowhere near "the best" like everyone seems to think it is. VI is my second choice, Kefka was one crazy mother fucker!

Plots/Graphics be damned, FFI, FFIII, and FFV played the best.
I love you so much in a very non-gay way.
FF IV is good, but not like..extremely good. I like how cecil develops though, and cain is the pwn.
Final Fantasy V is HIGHLY UNDERRATED!
Final Fantasy VI is in my opinion good, but overrated to heck and back, as is VII
FF VIII is probably my personal favorite. Screw you ignorants who say Squall is emo, he is NOT, for gods sake...
I haven't played 9, but from what I've seen/heard zidane can suck donkey balls in hell
X is good, it has a unique feel to it and just..I haven't played that a lot (just a couple of times at my cousin's place), but I love it..except tidus who needs to suck a railroad spike.

Only played 8, 10, and 12. Liked them all but only got to finish 10, and I thought 10 was the best. I'm interested in FF6 though.

Kefka ruled - which is why Kuja's so badass, he's like Sephiroth and Kefka mixed together =P

The characters in IX behaved much more like real people than the characters in every other Final Fantasy I've played except VI. The development team made a conscious decision, when they decided to make the characters not-all-human and slightly cartoony, to ensure that they were well characterised and behaved like real people. And it worked.

I'm tempted to give a party/system (level up and combat)/story/setting/villain comparison across all five games from VI to X, explaining why the first four are much more better than X in clear and sensible terms, but it may have to wait 'til the morning (GMT) as I don't sleep enough as it is.

VIII as a whole was the best for me.

Home to my two favourite characters (Zell and Seifer), my favourite plot/story and the best mingame ever (Triple Triad).

X is a close second, mainly because the CTB was a fantastic way of doing things, Sphere Grid was a fantastic levelling system and provided the most hours of gameplay (in one playthrough, not overall). Also Blitzball.

XII gets an honourable mention for the Licence Grid, second best combat system (Gambits and well executed real time) and massive post game content.

XIII looks like it will rank high, mainly because I've been wishing they would add a partner system for GFs/Eidolons/Aeons/Whatevers since I started playing. I've always imagined characters with them (like how Eiko and Madeen are entwined). If they have a high tier Limit "Fusion" type mechanic, I will love Square.
