YES. YES WE DO.

I'm playing one right now called "Trolling, Ironic, or Genuine?: A Post-Post-Modern Social Interaction Game."

Really? Video games are "art" now? That's a step down guys, "art" is awful. Do you know what being art means? It means video games are now comparable to this:

What, the, fuck, was, that? I think I became stupider just by viewing that. Not only was it boring it was also disgusting and vile. That's not art that's making a mess, and at least when kids do it they dont use their shirt to clean up a pile of their own shit and jizz. Hell kids don't even do that, hack artists do.

Also a side note, there's a game exhibit at the Smithsonian?
Yes indeed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109801-Smithsonians-Art-of-Video-Games-Selections-Announced].

Still not really caring. This won't change much at all in the grand scheme of things. As far as I know this only means that the Jason Rohrers of the world can now make games for free in the US, while other countries can still censor games. This isn't gonna give Australia the completely uncut version of The Witcher, nor will it make it legal to sell Mortal Kombat there. Let's quit assuming the US represents the world at large.

Cool about the 1st Amendment thing and protections and all though.

This helps what I wanted to do with my life, by helping further push Games as an artistic form of media

While yes, this is a happy thing, we can't let it go to our heads. There is still a lot of work to be done to get games as respected as the other forms of media, but you can't do it all in a night. This is a huge win for gaming as an art form and really does give the possibility of some strong titles being created by this grant, because innovation is pushed when the bottom line isn't money, and it can put a larger company into the shoes of indie creation and give us Indie AAA titles, a contradiction, but still the possibility for some great things.

I'm excited for the future of gaming much more now ^^

some of us (myself) are interested in a career in the game design industry.
And games being art or not has absolutely nothing to do with getting a career in game design industry.
I'm simply saying designers can now have 1st amendment protection and government grant money.

Besides, this industry has deserved the title (art) for so many years, it's just nice to finally see it become official.

Well, I guess that means the paper I was working on is kind of useless, but this is fantastic news.

Its a fair go for video game designers because programming is a fine art with much incorporation for games like storylines and meaning. The only people that will really view a video game artistically would be game developers and players themselves, if mainstream art comes to minds, a video game wouldn't even be given a thought of by others.

It would be a long shot for a video game to earn this grant but it's a nice thought that games are considered and appreciated as an art. Perhaps with many submissions of video games for this grant more of the people that wouldn't consider it an art actually might and give more of an open mind to the general public about video games instead of ignorantly misconceiving video games as just tools for entertainment containing only horrible images and themes and realise that there is an extremely large amount of effort and time put into the creating them very much like a fine art. Michael Angelo spent a very long time planning and sculpting his David, and all the time and effort that was put in, look what came out.

Good on them for realising the artwork behind video games and they should appreciated to get grants to further improve the artistic elements in video games. Good news for game designers.

Take that Roger Ebert.
Just posted it on his Facebook page. Respectfully of course.
He won?t care. He was right then and he?s right now. Games aren?t art.
To be fair, Ebert said games aren't art now, but most definitely have the potential to be art.

Example: Twilight, The Expendables, etc, aren't art, yet you can't deny that things like Citizen Kane, and The Story of O are art.

I think he put it best this way, paraphrased:

"Maybe they'd be right. I wouldn't get it, but not because I'm too old. Differently evolved, perhaps."

He's from a different time with a different angle on what art is. The fact that he concedes that something he'd consider art can spring from the medium eventually is good enough for me. I respect him for that admittance.

That said, I think (certain) games are very much art here and now, and he simply doesn't think so because he hasn't grown up with them.

I don't know, but if it means more games like IKARUGA I'm all for it.
