About 3 hours into the single player for MW1 i realized that if i hit the left mouse button it would fire a weapon. What a nice surprise! Made everything easier.
...smartass. It took me about two weeks before I realized that just hitting B in Super Smash Bros. Mêlée as opposed to side+B made it do something different.

Well mine would have to be World of Warcraft and not knowing that the game could actually be turned off...

In Parasite Eve 2, I got a few hours into the game without having figured out how to unlock Aya's Parasite Powers. Since this meant I couldn't heal myself, I basically got my ass handed to me. A lot.

Also, in WoW, I always thought that you had to sell things to vendors by opening the Buyback window, then dragging the item you wanted to sell into an empty slot. This meant I could only sell a certain number of items every day, since the space was limited. So I would constantly be running around with bags full of vendor trash, until: "Wait, I can just RIGHT CLICK...ugh!" *insert sound of face repeatedly hitting desk*

I played TF2 for almost a year before i figured out that as a Demoman, you can hold down fire button for the stickygrenade launcher to make the grenades shoot longer..

Final Fantasy VIII, I didn't know you could Junction magic until about halfway through the second disc (give me a break, I was 10).

Final Fantasy VII, I didn't really know how to use Materia properly until the Shinra building, and even then I had a very limited knowledge. But it's ok, I figured it out.
I didn't have a clue what the sphere grid in Final Fantasy X did. I got to the first Travel Agency, thought about how long it too me to get there and realised I'd gone wrong somewhere.

for the longest time in WoW I didn't know num-lock auto-moved your character. holding W down and trying to guild chat was a pain.
Same for me! I had no idea you could auto run until I was about level 45/50 (in vanilla) I used to jam a little bit of paper in my keyboard so my character would 'autorun' whilst I took a piss or got a drink >.<

I played Borderlands for a week before my friend told me that you can lock the gun on your vehicle to a target.

You can do that? I didn't know and I've played fallout for months. Guess that's my example now as well.

The end boss os Killer Instinct Gold for N64. You had to do some kind of combo to knock him off the ledge, otherwise his health would stay at %1. Wasn't a hard combo, they just didn't tell you it was necessary. That game effectively ruined the franchise however, so screw it!

Seriously? I found that out around 2 or 3 days of gameplay. You people need to experiment more.

I still haven't figured out how to put your weapon away without unequipping it either? :D
Press and hold X to holster your weapon.

On Topic:played Oblivion for around half a year before discovering you could "Grab" objects and make them float around. A pointless feature, but one I used massively afterwards nonetheless.
You didn't know that? You need to experiment more (I'm simply pointing out the irony)

Hey, if TheSpoonyOne has problems with Final Fantasy VIII's junction magic, it's OK for you to have it as well.

I began to play dark sector one day and I played through it until I came to this one trap door. I observe every corner of it, I shoot it, I throw the glave at it, I even threw a grenade or two at it. Nearly crippled to tears I was just about ready to give up when I furiously shot at it with the assault rifle when it suddenly flew open and Im thinking what the hell?, thats when I noticed that it had a shootable lock on it....... and it was glowing................ I understand that its sort of the developers fault for not making that a bit more evident but it felt so obvious and clear as it was that all I could do was sit their with my mouth hanging in the wind thinking whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

I beat Burnout (the first one) without using boost, wondering what that bar on the bottom is for. Sometimes I beat even the easiest bosses then come back to it later, like a month or so, and have no effin clue how to fight it like Screaming Mantis in MGS4 or some DMC boss, etc.
Oh god DMC bosses; I'm still not sure how I beat Sanctus (main boss on DMC4) on Dante must die difficulty; tried again recently got absolutely annihilated.

Pretty much the entire level and skill like ability selection in xenosaga. Quit once a quarter of the way through, restarted, then re-started again about halfway through. Third time was a charm.

About the Pip-Boy light: it tells you on page TWO of the instruction manual. The page right after the contents page. Doesn't anyone read those any more?
Plus, even if you didn't look at the instruction manual, one of the many loading screen tips is how to turn on the flashlight. Do people just zone out during those now?

On topic, the biggest example I can think of at the moment is never sitting through the credits in the first Marvel: Ultimate Alliance game. Apparently there was something funny at the end of the credits but I got rid of the game before I ever knew that.
