All this talk about the Dark Eldar makes me want to add my 2 cents:
Firstly there was a masiive war against the Ctan and Necrons against the old ones. I think the old ones made the Eldar and they kicked the Necrons rusty arses back to where they came. With nothing to do, they all got a lil bored and started experimenting. Well, the sorta kinda summonded a daemon into existance and blew they race into tiny smithereens in the destructiong and chaos. The Eldar that lived either killed themselves, went mad, or both. Sorry guys.
Hunted by She Who Thirsts (Slaneesh godess *****) the retreated to their homeworld and locked it away in a maze of webway portals so noone can ever attack them. They torture main and kill for their own personal needs, to piss off She Who Thirsts and also to distract her her from killing them. Plus, their guns shot crystals that shatter inside your body, so there's a good chance you won't die but roll on the floor in pain while they escort you to the torture room.
The backstory of the necrons is something I specialise in. I'm playing a game of defcon though so I'll come back later to explain it properly. Suffice to say you're totally wrong about them.
Ok, so here's how the necron backstory looks.
They started out as the necrontyr, a normal organic race characterised a short life-span because of their system's sun (I think the reasoning was radiation but that's unimportant). So after a lot of struggle the necrontyr became a very minor galactic power. From memory they were a power only within their system.
Anywho, along come the Old Ones with their near immortality and galaxy hopping magicks. The Necrontyr get a bit jealous and lash out to very little effect. The Old Ones swat the necrontyr away and leave them alone to brood.
Afterwards, the necrontyr discover some strange beings flitting about their sun. They capture one and place it in a corporeal form, assuming this might give them an edge on the Old Ones. The first C'tan is put into a material body. Long story short, the rest of the C'tan follow, the necrontyr worship them as gods and are offered immortality for their trouble. Cue the Necrons- immortal shells of their former conscious selves.
With newfound technologies the Necrons wage war on the Old Ones in a galactic struggle. The Old Ones are initially pushed back and the C'tan start backstabbing and eating each other over their spoils of war. Only 5 survive in the end. With the time gained from this infighting the Old Ones create several warp-sensitive powers (the only major surviving one being the Eldar) as a form of couter-attack. This attack is intially successful but the psychic pain of the newer races' warp powers tears the warp apart (it used to be a calm thing believe it or not). This new warp spawns all manner of creatures that begin taking over and subjugating any living sapient creatures on whatever planet they touch.
The C'tan, their plans as galactic cattle drivers temporarily thwarted by these new interlopers, plan to go into an artificial slumber. Sleeping thus, they would wait out the warp's fury and emerge when less tainted sapient creatures open up their tombs.
Dun, dun, DUUUUUUN
Come back next week for my explanation of why this great idea is totally fubared thanks to the Void Dragon and prophecy.
