Anik concentrated for a few seconds on the 'picture' of the rune on the ground in her mind, then she crossed the arms like it was shown to her and shouted. "Fire!"

Aquamarine listened to EMily with genuine interest. "That's... Fascinating, really. Very few functions of Gems are entirely automatic, and none so complex."

Yeager would have no problems leaving through the east gate. However, since he was a little bit behind the group, he would still see the blue sun above.

The rune brightened, glowing with yellow light, and a sound similar to chiming bells was heard. A flame that came up to waist height erupted from the centre of the rune, bright and crackling. It held there for a short while until it burned out due to lack of kindling, leaving behind some glassed earth and smoke. Robin clapped.

EMily was intrigued.

"A lot of creatures on Earth are. But I'm quite curious. How do you maintain and heal yourself? You need energy to move your muscles and think. Do you have to command your body to maintain itself, since it's not automatic?"

"Sustaining one's form is automatic, but it draws from the magical energy within a gemstone, but the only 'maintainance' required for our bodies is to stay active when they are damaged. To hold a different form while shapeshifting requires constant concentration, and it also requires complete focus to rebuild one's body after it is destroyed, as Topaz was back on the mercenary boat."

Anik felt the flame. When she heard Robin clapping, she grinned. "Nice. I didn't think I would get it first try. This will at least be useful for cooking. Heh.
So, do you have this rune in your book, and throw fire with it? Or do you just burn something ... but you would need to get the rune on it."

Some of Sibylla's snakes lost interest in Timea as she lowered her hand, going back to observing the general surroundings. "So we're jus' gonna go look fer a God what could send ya'll someplace else? Ah can't really see that workin' ta be honest. Gods ain't exactly the type ta jus' do what folks ask of 'em fer nuthin'."

Cybil watched Robin and Anik train. "Ooh! Kinda neat." She said, though she seemed much less interested in the fire itself than what it left behind.

"So then, if the body draws energy from the gemstone, where does the gemstone get its energy? And what is the purpose of the shapeshifting? Is it part of survival?"

"The charging and posing boost its power. Once you reach a certain point, you can cast magic just by sticking your hand out and can perform weak spells instantly. And the specifics vary with spells, but the reason yours went out is because basic Fire needs something to burn. Sand isn't flammable." Robin lectured Anik, then looked to Cybil, noticing her looking at the obsidian on the floor. "Unfortunately I don't think we can make you a drinking glass yet..." he joked to the catgirl.

Yeager was really, really confused about the lack of any chase or trouble in his escape. Maybe Cali changed his mind about killing me? Maybe he's just slow. Maybe he's just an idiot... hmm. thought Yeager as he sat against the nearest piece of cover he could find, took out some letter writing supplies from a tiny pocket in his briefcase, and began to write.

"So if I somehow infused my swords with oil ..." Anik thought aloud.
Then she said: "So you don't necessarily need the rune? Or is there some trick to it?

... Anyways, I think we ought to get going again. Is everyone rested?"

"Once a Gem is infused with the lifeforce of an organic life-bearing planet, the magical energy if a gemstone is limitless, and only occasionally needs time to charge."Aqua explained. "As for shapeshifting, it has it's uses, but is not necessary for survival. Sometimes a disguise could be useful, or possibly an extended limb or larger, stronger body. Forms stronger than usual are not sustainable, however, and any form different from the basic one takes some amount of focus to maintain."

"I hope you don't mean that it's truly limitless. The sun that warms the earth has been burning hydrogen for nearly 4.5 billion years. And it's expected to burn hydrogen for an additional 3.5 billion years before all of its reserves run out. So it won't live forever. But tell me, who made you in the first place? Not just you, I mean the first unit of your species. You've told me that you're generated, not born. And my guess is that you don't reproduce asexually. So who or what created you in the first place?"

"If you infused them with fire, they wouldn't be on fire themselves, but the would throw fire and set things you strike a!right. And the runes and name are needed, but the pose is not." Robin explained. "And I'm not sure about leaving yet."

"I don't see why we shouldn't leave." Matilda said, as she stood up and stretched.
"She said it was magical energy. Why couldn't that be truly limitless?" Mochán asked EMily as he returned his book to his computer. "Magic doesn't need to obey the laws of reality, after all."

After some time, Yeager went back to the city gates and handed a guard a sealed letter. "Take this to Prince Califorth"

The letter would read:
"Dear Prince Califorth,

This is your old pal Yeager, I noticed a distinct lack of anyone trying to kill me on the way out, so I was wondering if you changed your mind. For the record, your business is your business, and my business is my business, which is still selling weapons. I don't really care at all about your little family squabbles, so here is my offer. You can still hire me, I'll still make you weapons, and we forget about everything else that happened today. If this offer intrigues you, head outside the east gate and we'll have a chat.

P.S. No, I will not meet with you inside the city walls.

Sincerely,
Yeager."
