What gives me hope is the delusional thought that religion will eventually die off and the human race will finally be able to advance and grow, uninhibited by the thought that some big bearded guy in the sky is watching each and every one of us 24/7 every day of your lives, and will send us into a fiery pit of pain and eternal suffering for the slightest mishap. Don't get me wrong, the ten commandments are excellent rules to live by, love thy mother and father, do not covet thy neighbor's goods and wife, etc. It's a good foundation for everyday life. The thing that bothers me is the overwhelming level of restriction and annoyances we put ourselves through because of what an old book says is right over 2000 years ago.
This is the modern world, people, not ancient Jerusalem. (I hope I spelled that right.) We need to start thinking for ourselves instead of letting one of this world's greatest and oldest mistakes try to dictate our very existance. Here's an example for you to chew on. Religious groups have been lobbying to keep stem cell and cloning research from progressing for years. Why? Because they think that it's "not our place to play God with life." I'm sorry, but I see this as a blind and stupid point of view. With stem cells, it could be possible to regrow damaged portions of a major organ. With therapeutic cloning, modern medicine could grow a replacement liver or kidney from the patient's own DNA, thus eliminating the need to be put on a waiting list or the paralyzing fear of the body rejecting the foreign organ and the need for immunosuppresants to treat the rejection.
Shifting gears for a second, let's take a look at what religion has done in the past. The Greek and early Roman cultures had a diverse polytheistic religion. Did they let their religion get in the way of their scientific and philosophical advancements? No. In some cases, it even helped them along. Let's fast forward a bit to, say, the 14-1700s. Because the church had assumed such a stranglehold on the people of that time, intelligent people such as healers and budding scientists were labeled as witches and other such things and quickly 'tried and convicted' and often burned at the stake.
There is also the fact that most wars that have occurred in Humanity's past have been instigated for religious purposes. The Crusades, the Inquisition, the list goes on! Even in this modern world, religion is still used as a tool to control the weak, fearful, and stupid. Suicide bombers in Iraq are brainwashed with the idea of 72 virgins granted to them upon giving their lives in the name of their god. Last time I checked, their holy texts said nothing about 72 virgins.
tl;dr: If more people believed in themselves and the other people around them instead of an imaginary old man in the sky, then the world would be a much better place.
