People keeping mentioning the telephone and I was under the impression there was some debate as to whether Alexander Graham Bell merely patented the telephone having stolen the invention itself.

Hmm as a Brit there is much I could claim my compatriots invented but I think our single greatest contribution to the modern world was mechanical standardization. Without the ability to create identical parts repeatedly I do not think the modern world could exist.
We also originated the concept of National Debt - the idea that a nation could loan or borrow money much like an individual and we used it to raise funds to fight those dastardly Frenchmen!
Edit: Does this mean we are responsible for the global recession we experienced?

HAH! I knew someone from the US would post 'The Internet' sooner or later. You, sir, are exceptionally misinformed. Much as the USA would like to take the credit for creating the most important invention of the past century, they have no rights to do so. The internet was actually invented by Tim Berners-Lee, an ENGLISHMAN from London who created it in 1990. To be fair though, the USA did have the tools to make something similar as early as the 1960's, but the internet as a whole, and the 'World Wide Web', weren't created until 1990, after a proposal for its development was put forward in 1989 by Berners-Lee, who was working at CERN at the time.
