Nothing I think it is an awful idea to make a movie out a MMORPG especially one like WoW. I know there is a slight story in it but there is really not enough there to make a decent story unless they are going to take a lot of elements from Warcraft. Overall I think this is a horrible idea. So to make it anyway decent they will need to follow Warcraft.

I remember a time when people knew what they were posting about...

Edit: I would prefer a Warcraft movie though since that is set before WoW (4 years actually) Good thing it is a Warcraft movie.

Okay so I just watched a Sam Raimi interview about how pumped he is to be making a World of Warcraft movie. There are 40 pages already written but it is still a work in progress with the script. So with the game being so vast and the people that play it scarier than the monsters themselves what should be in the movie?
I thought it was based on Warcraft since it is one year before World of Warcraft.

I would totally go see it if it was true to the source material in parody. The movie opens as someone just logs in and give some sort of in game reason as to why but they are teleported into their computer. Now, they are in the world and have to complete a quest to get out. Other players grief them and just make fun of MMO's the whole movie. Would be epic.

I'm not the person your post was addressed too but I just have to say. If a viewer can't tell the difference between LotR and Warcraft then, they're just an idiot. The differences between the two are vast. If you can't differentiate it's not just a mtter of the nuances it's a fundemental inability to grasp themes, mood or any form of subtext.
Yes, I know. When you're steep in a particular genre it's difficult to see it from the outside.

What can you say about this Warcraft thing that makes it fundamentally different from Lord of the Rings or Dungeons & Dragons or Warhammer or any number of various fantasy worlds that take strong cues from Lord of the Rings.

The only people who wouldn't be able to tell them apart are not likely to see the film under any circumstances.
This suggest that the movie would only be for the fans of the game. Which hangs a bigger question mark on making the movie in the first place.

AAlso direct knock-off films not exist but gain success frequently.
While true, they also fail frequently. More frequently than they succeed. So it's a gamble and the odds are not in your favor.

This is Sam Raimi we're talking about. I'm hoping for tongue in cheek humor mixed with awesome action, along the lines of Army of Darkness, Hercules, and Xena. If this movie is really going to be about some guy leveling up, as one of the above posters mentioned, I may actually want to watch it -- but then I don't play WoW, I just enjoy Raimi's more humorous works.

No, this trying to look at it from the point of view of someone unable to comrehend the idea of fiction. I would honestly doubt the mental cpactiy of anybody who thought warcraft was a LotR copy.

That wasn't what I was suggesting.

No, it isn't a gamble. They succed or fail mprimarily based upon whether or not they're any good. And Sam Raimi can make a good film.

Not being able to tell the difference between LOTR and WoW would be like not being able to tell the difference between Lethal Weapon and The Naked Gun.

Lord of the Rings was a serious, mythology-influenced story with most of the magical elements being low-key.

World of Warcraft is one step away from being Looney Toons: Orcs and Humans. And Taurens. And Walrus people.

So apparently Sam Raimi is a huge WoW fan and said in the interview that he has a 2 characters and one of them is 71. So in all fairness he is a fan of the games atmosphere and storyline which gives him a chance not to tank making this flick. My only hope is that Uwe Bowl the tard that has made every possible good videogame movie horrid unwatchable filth stays far far away from this.

I am not blind to them I just think that with the nature of the mini main stories in WoW it doesn't lend well to movies. It would lend better to a TV series or maybe a mini series where they can look at each plot in depth and then have them intertwine. So no it is not because I am blind to them it is because I personally don't think it lends well to a movie type format unless they go Sin City route.

Yes while it could be done well if done properly I just think there are too many little details to get it right. They will have to invent their own main characters while throwing nods to characters and artifacts in the mythos of WoW. They might even have to throw in a few WoW bosses. I don't want to dismiss it outright which is a bit of what I am doing is bad on my part. I just think there are too many niggly little details to fit in which I don't lends to a movie. If you want to see what I think might better lend itself to a WoW production as I just said a mini series would be probably the best. It could focus on 1 character from each race individualy and then they could meet and and have their paths intertwine to end up fighting the villain they choose to use.

I am not stupid and do know what I am posting about. Read my first reply to the first user a quoted in this t o find out what I think about the WoW story in a movie. There is no need to get prentencious about it because I don't think WoW's lack of a true main single story lends itself to a movie.

Personally i hope they do it in the cinematic computer graphics.
If "not making the damn thing" is not an option that I would have to agree with this statement. The same goes with the Mass Effect movie that is supposedly being worked on. On that note I sincerely hope that they stop making films of ANY video game, real soon.

It's been planned for years.

Oh WoW...(pun intended!) they're going to need to split this several ways for it to work...
That game is way too massive for a single movie unless it's about 9 hours.

I thought the Warcraft movie was going to be about WC3.

and if it were Blizz in charge of their own lore
Have you seen how badly Blizz has raped their own lore? It's changed and been contradicted at so many points that WoW looks nothing like WC 3.

OT: After Spider-man 3 I have no faith in Raimi and I'm pretty sure this will suck.
Yes, but like I fucking said, if they were in charge of it, they'd actually know what they're doing, instead of Mr Raimi, who probably has no fucking clue what a Draeni is.

And no shit. Of course it has been planned/expected/whatever, but the fact is that I, me, myself, didn't know about it, especially since they have given no mention of it. So instead of saying, "Yeah, it's been planned/announced for ages", maybe give some source?

Well if these flick ever see's the light of day seeing how visually amazing fantasy/ sci-fi movies can be after the eye pleaser that Avatar gave us I can only hope what Sam did with Spartacus will translate over well with a rich story franchise like Warcraft. In short he is no Uwe Bowl so it has a chance.
