I'd cheat and hack the system to select myself and other 5 people I know and like, screw the list. It's not like we really know what we're going to need in the new world anyway.

I'd save 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 10.

I get the feeling they're the best approach to saving in nuclear fallout. also, I can't stand the thought of letting pregnant women die, It's just my nature.

I heard this question the other day in my philosophy class and what at first seemed like a harmless conversation starter slowly became an all out philosophical brawl. I now pose this question to, members of the Escapist, and ask: who do you save?

The question goes as thus: You are a government leader who is aware of an impending nuclear war, and is faced with the decision of who to save. Their is only one fallout bunker capable of escaping the radiation (just go with it), and it only has enough food for 3 months, which is how long the radiation is supposed to last, and 6 people total. Keep in mind that these people that are in this vault may be the last humans and must reinhabit the vacant Earth. You have a list of 10 people to choose from...
1) A male Librarian
2) The Librarian's wife, who is 6 months pregnant
3) An Olympic male Athlete (for arguments sake, of all sports)
4) An elderly male, famous historian
5) A renowned female starlet (dancer, actress, singer, songwriter, etc)
6) A college co-ed
7) A second year medical student
8) A police officer
9) A rabbi
10)A biochemist
11)A tub of vaseline and a pack of Kleenex

So now it is entirely up to you... Who do you save? Only 6 people can survive, meaning 4 people have to die.
I'll take #11 x 6

I know exactly how I would remake the world so I would choose only the females. If there are more then 6 females I would choose the highest quality between them.

I'd save the biochemist.

Medicine is kinda straightforward to figure out, if you have enough practice lying around... but the biochemistry would take forever to figure out if lost.

Also, those guys make the best beer and, uh, "Other" substances..

I like this question. The ethics in it really makes it a mind bender. Of course 2 would be a choice everyone might make, but if you don't choose 1 as well, then you're separating a husband and wife. A historian would have a lot of use, but would you choose this elderly man over a young college student just because he has more knowledge? Would that be logically correct even, knowing that the student could live much longer than the old historian? Then, for the rabbi, would the last remnant of society survive better with the hope of a god looking down upon them and the moral boost in his preachings?

I'm not going to give my choice because I don't think I could make it. If the world was going up in flames around me and I had only a few moments to choose these six people before rushing into the vault, my panicky, indecisive mind and I would choose the 6 people who could run into the vault the fastest.

1) Rather useless in the grand scheme of things, though perhaps a good father-figure.
2) Job? Aptitude? In any case, she's like saving two people (albeit two nondescript people). I just hope that she's due a week or two post-fallout danger.
3) Also pretty useless in survival terms, though if the police officer is physically weak, then he may come in handy. Should have good genes for reproduction.
4) As much of a shoe-in as it gets. History is important. That said, he'll be needing more than our combined weights in paper down the road.
5) While the arts are important, and I desperately want to say yes, she seems like dead weight. Genes could be nice, though she might be a retarted starlet (wouldn't be the first).
6) Is it a she? Is she hot? Could be key in the repopulation. Could also be unbearable for those 3 months. Not to mention useless except as a baby generator.
7) Almost invaluble, both for knowledge and more practical uses. Obviously not a licensed doctor, but as close as we have. Might be able to circumvent with texts, but rendered necessary with experience, especially in combination with the librarian's wife.
8) Someone's gotta keep the peace! A good choice, simply because we'll need such people later on, but not a first pick. Also has a gun for those pesky supermutants.
9) A spiritual leader is needed. If not because of their religion, then because of their intermediary role during disputes, and the morals the religion promotes. I would take the rabbi himself over just the texts, since they can be widely interpreted. Also, I'm not jewish.
10) Biochemist? Really? Isn't that something we may be better without? Seriously though, may just be useful, though I can't really say how, if everything's going to be rubble. Not a first pick.

Christ, that's a thick wall of text. It sounds more like a walkthrough than an opinion.

What about me? Does that mean that 7 are saved? Or that 5 die?

Assuming that I'm not a part of the question, if the officer and/or the biochemist are unrelated women, then the librarian, the athlete, the starlet and the college brat all die. If they are male (and the med student is too), then they are to be replaced with the starlet and the co-ed (if female; otherwise it's the athlete), in order of importance. This is simply to ensure that the gene pool isn't frighteningly small.

What a fascinating topic...

I'd save
2) The Librarian's wife, who is 6 months pregnant (provided I can separate her from her husband)
3) An Olympic male Athlete
4) An elderly male, famous historian
7) A second year medical student
10)A biochemist
8) A police officer (depending on how many females we have and whether or not the officer is female)
5) A renowned female starlet (if we need females)

The most important thing is that after the fallout:
1. our group can survive in the world, ie. find food, shelter, fend off animals and posssibly aggressive radiation sick humans.
2. that we can maintain a breeding population.
3. we have enough combined knowledge to hopefully kick-start a new civilisation using whatever facilities survived.

The main problem with the question is you don't give the genders of ALL the people, so it's partially guess-work.

I think it's safe to oust the rabbi (no real skills or qualities that can't be eclipsed by the historian), the librarian (not necessarily anyone learned, just a library worker), and the starlet (who is kicked for obvious reasons.) The hard part is who to oust next- the co-ed, the athlete, or the police officer...

I'm going to go with the athlete out, because the policeman's strength and endurance should compensate for the loss of anything he could offer anyway.

I would save the Librarian and his wife... keep the family.

The famous historian because he probably has some good stories.

The medical student should be on everyone's list because they are the only ones with medical training.

The police officer to maintain law.

And I guess the Biochemist would be my last pick.

stop me if you'v heard this one..
a rabbi,a priest and nun go into a fallout shelter..

The best defense is a good offense..which is why the USA has enough nuclear devices to nuke every square inch of the world 3x over..

so lets start with Russia(but not Ukraine..they gave the world Milla Jovovich) and China, then move on to the Arab nations who are not friendly.

Only 6 people isn't enough to repopulate the world, unless you can envision a hostile world populated by inbred three-fingered imbeciles.

A. For this scenario I would pick: librarian, historian, rabbi and 3 other males so there is no possibility for them to breed.

B. Now supposing INSTEAD there are more vaults, but I only own 1, which I won't need for myself (because I had my own oil rig or interstellar space ship + enclave forces):

1) rabbi
2) librarian's wife
3) starlet
4) meds student
5) cop
6) coed

Install camera's and mics in the vault and hope the make eachother's lives as miserable as possible for as long as possible.

The med student, if it's a woman for obvious reasons of trying to repopulate the earth.

edit: the librarian and his pregnant wife, the police officer, athlete and rabbi(since I don't think the human race would be the same without some sense of spirituality).

1) A male Librarian:- Serves no purpose (I could quite easily check my books out myself).

2) The Librarian's wife, who is 6 months pregnant:- Re-population. Already has one set of genes in her brewing, so will stem a little bit of gene sharing.

3) An Olympic male Athlete (for arguments sake, of all sports):- Seems fairly useless being able to run/swim/dive/ride a bike to Olympic level in post nuclear world.

4) An elderly male, famous historian:- Books will preserve his knowledge.

5) A renowned female starlet (dancer, actress, singer, songwriter, etc):- Breeding and keeping moral up with her muse like ways.

6) A college co-ed:- Doubt they could bring much to the table.

7) A second year medical student:- Medical knowledge is knowledge. Could also help Biochemist.

8) A police officer:- They need people skills and a little bit of know how on the self defense.

9) A rabbi:- Religion...For one faith at that. Plus I'd start the Cult of the doom bunny o.0

10)A biochemist:- More skills for the protection of our tribe.

*Edit*

2,5,7,8,10 + Me.

Why do so many say 1? Too me a librarian is a person that sit's at the entrance, tells you to hush up and makes a note of what you've brought back or taken out - It's not like he is a teacher or an archivist (or something along those lines).

The athlete, the co-ed, the med student and the cop. I only choose four so that way we have more food per person.
