People will always have different opinions and some poeple can't handle that too well.

Then also if you speak with someone face to face what they're saying wouldn't come of as agressive. But since all we get here is text then there is not much to do about it because over 80% of how we react to what people say is in body language and tone of voice etc. So basically when reading a post it's either neutral, funny or agressive. We can't interpret posts in many other ways since communication is so much more than just the words we speak

If I told you, I'd have to kill you.

It's better for both of us if I just leave it at that.

The problem is when people get agrresive or unreasonable. Generally peole are rather civil on most matters but things such as piracy, where the two sides cannot stand each other, are bound to cause agressive behaviour.

I think this aggression is all caused by violent videogames! haha, no, seriously I think some people do play a lot of console first-person shooters and all that fragging, pwning and trash-talking can surely carry over to a nice, friendly forum like this one. Hold your fire!

What do you guys think about all of this?
But @OP ya see how easy it is to become hostile just off of one opinion? Christ it's like the internet was filled with alot of philosophers (Bull-shitters) who have too much time on their hands and would rather lash out at other people for not thinking the same as they do.

Still though, I can always count on the Escapist (8/10 times) to be a place of rationality and less infuriating posts.

Welcome to the internet where people get very angry over everything. It's really not that bad on here compared to other forums though, just the occasional argument that gets out of hand. It usaully happens when people show of their amazing ability to defy logic and the fact that most people ask for a debate when they already have an opinion that they don't want to change.
Then it is more of an argument than a debate.

But, I'm a philosopher. What's wrong with philosophy?

OT: I typically try to use the internet to be representative of myself in real life, as I imagine most people do. As far as why there's more conflict on the internet, I think it's mostly because there are more people on the internet. I mean in real life there's a decent chance that you won't run into someone who thinks differently than you on most topics in your group of family and friends. On the internet, however, there are so many more people, all talking and sharing their opinions and beliefs, some of them are bound to differ. The real problem, I think, is that people don't realy know how to respond reasonably to differing ideas, or want to respond reasonably in some cases. In realities both virtual and proper. Which isn't realy surprizing, having one's beliefs challenged can be quite the difficult thing for some people.

Honestly I haven't noticed any on the escapist. Everywhere else on the other hand, especially Youtube I see what you mean. Honestly it's just all people are hostile, maybe not explosive or externally hostile but people don't see things they don't like and go "Welp whatevs", they grin and bear it. There's a difference between tolerance and acceptance after all. Of course the internet is the land seemingly without repercussions so people are naturally horrible.

Honestly it's interesting to say the least because it has become so common place that any hostility at all is totally arbitrary. People throw around racial and sexual slurs colloquially and hand out death threats like they are thank-you notes. People react to them like they stepped in a puddle, like they stepped in a puddle that a total stranger wants the entirety of your being wiped of the earth.

Honestly the internet isn't anymore hostile than real life. All that has happened is that people's hostility is subject to ridiculous hyperbole and reactions have been toned down to zilch. I think it's horrible, but not in the way you might think. People are so desensitized to complaining and hate that real criticism is barely acknowledged and we have allowed our standards to spiral downwards into nothingness. This video epitomizes the internet's lack of standards as a whole. Skip to the 3:55 mark to see what I mean, Diabetus encapsulates the youtube community so well.

Nothing really, I like the subject myself, but I said it's like having a gathering of numerous philosophers in one place. In other words a huge clash of values, beliefs, opinions, theories and views that may not end well a good majority of the time.
I love philosophy however at times it tends to dance around questions I rather have answered directly.

So yeah my clash between philosophy and science raves on

I generally try not to be aggressive outside of humorous contexts, as it tends to be a self-sustaining cycle.

Quite right, but I think an ideal philosopher (or, in my opinion, a proper philosopher) would be open to opposing ideas and would be able to settle, or even simply encounter, differing opinions reasonably and peacefully. Basically, I think that a mass congregation of philosophers is not an accurate image (assuming my idea of a proper philosopher holds true) of the clashes of opinion on the internet. In fact, I think that a lack of practised philosophy is partially responsible for the kind of hostility seen on the internet.

As for your battle between philosophy and science, might I add this little bit of philosophy from Bertrand Russell:

"It is true that this is partly accounted for by the fact that, as soon as definite knowledge concerning any subject becomes possible, this subject ceases to be called philosophy, and becomes a separate science."

And, if you're especially fond of philosophy, this bigger bit of philosophy: http://skepdic.com/russell.html

Well I'll be damned my friend has been trying to get me to read Betrand Russell for some time. Thank you I'll be sure to look into this. Bookmarked it for safe keeping, but I apologize for my brash and someone unwitting lash out at philosophy.

Still though it's good for both intellectual stimulation along with a few laughs here and there.

Thank you for that read and now I leave you with a few chuckles as well
