People are scared of science because the people who made up their religion tell them to be. Sheep.

"Science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition"

I truly appreciate science for all it can do and teach. As to why people dislike it? It tends to blow away everything they hold dear, often coldly, and has little to no room for the flowery things we make up and choose to beleive.

Because their brains are the size of marbles and twice as smooth. I theorize the root cause is slow learners mating for many generations. Cookie for the reference.

This is a good video for all those people who don't "trust" science

I also have a friend who's always like "FUUUCCCK SCIENCEE!!" I don't think she ever says why she feels that way, then again she also really hates muslims....but never says why

Here's that video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRLR9jhP_DM

I can't really call myself a scientist just yet, as I am merely a senior in college with a bizarre fascination with the atomic and subatomic world, but I might as well offer my two shillings:
People are idiots. Don't try to deny it, there were idiots who shat their pants at the mere thought of the LHC going operational, or who will literally try to bash your skull in with a bible if you state that evolution is a fact and not a theory (in the colloquial sense of the words), or who still believe in homeopathy. I suppose people want simple explanations, but that's not how the universe works. And if an idiot cannot grasp a complex idea, they are at least somewhat likely to come up with some batshit explanation that fits their own standards.

Another explanation might be that some people have trouble accepting that there are people who are smarter than they could ever hope to be, and will try to raise hell before being educated by the smart folk. Yeah...scientists lie. Bull.Fucking.Shit. We simplify to make it understandable to novices in the field, before gradually introducing better approximations, and ultimately the most advanced (and usually most difficult) theories. Don't believe me? Well, try to remember what you have learned about water from kindergarten on through high school (and college if you went). Yeah, science changes all the time, don't it?

After reading a couple of topics here and else where it struck me that a good percentage of people seem to either harbour doubts about science or openly admit to not trusting scientists in general.
So fellow escapists what do you think about science, scientists and why do some many people dislike "science" overall?
thats because there are so many stupid, religious people in the world
Scientologists are atheists, as well as this guy [http://www.timecube.com/].

Mendel, Lemaitre, Dobzhansky, Planck, Florensky, Pasteur, Faraday, Gregory, Newton and Kepler, to name but a few, were all religious.

Seriously, science and religion have nothing to do with each other.

I think it's less about science and scientists and more about the people/companies that represent what they do.
How often do we actually read or hear what scientists have to say?
Most of us may see a few quotes, but the rest of the information is written by someone for a newspaper or tv program so that they can garner a reaction from a less interested majority.

"Scientists believe they have found a way to cure cancer!!"
That's great, but it's not the whole story, talk to the scientist who sparked this headline and he/she will surely have doubts about their find and it's more likely to be one piece of the puzzle and not a full blown cure.

What sometimes seems to be a belief system, like a fear of science, is usually rooted in a compulsive need to control as much as possible.

Wow this is a good one. In my opinion (also, as stated many times before) People are generally afraid of what they can't fully understand. Science has many facets and therefore is typically viewed as a difficult subject to study. On a side note, some people just like ICP.

Science is good as it helps us know more about the world around us and how and why everything works. People don't like science for various reasons, but some don't trust it as it's always changing. Years ago, science said the world was flat. Yes, that was a long LONG time ago, but it still helps to show the point.
Actually, years ago, it was the church who said the world was flat. It also said the earth was the center of the universe.
yes the church did say this....as did the scientists of the day. as it happens my exam tomorrow (which im increasingly becomming frustrated with the studying for) involves the scientific revolution of us changing from a geocentric theory of the universe to a heliocentric theory.
The only reason the scientists of those days agreed with the church was they would be slaughtered if they said otherwise. An example of the church forcing scientists to agree is the much mentioned Galileo Galilei, he was threatened and also eventually killed for his attempt to spread his discovery that Tellus is orbiting the Sun.

That's why I don't like religion, they're such hypocrites sometimes (and for making up "sins").

Someone leaked the plans for the giant killer robots.
Seriously though, people are afraid of change and advances in science=change.

The Boson, I believe, is related to mass in the Universe and how it was originally formed (although that is incredibly simplified because Particle Physics isn't exactly my strong point. I'm sure DFish can elaborate/correct me if needs be), so it could be related to a cancer cure, I don't see the chances of that being particularly high.

And yes, humanity is always naturally curious, and as such our world is slowly being destroyed. I realise the irony of using technology to say this.
I was more being contrary than anything else, like u, I doubt those chances are particularly high. I wouldn't have thought that our natural curiosity is directly destroying out world tough, not that u are implying as such, it is indirectly responsible maybe, but I think it's the ignorance and abuse of science and it's discoveries that are to blame in that respect.

It is not that which science discovers, but the way in which we use it, that should be our primary concern.

edit: tidying up a little for clarity.

I think it mainly has to do with the fear of what they don't understand. Also, science has a lot of trial and error, so some people find it hard to put their trust in science. Especially when they see their religion as perfect and without such error.

Well, it is mostly because of the impending zombie apocalypse. Or the black hole emitting device, or the time travel device that will unravel the fabric of the universe or cause a war with our future selves. Why can't black mesa or the umbrella corporation focus their efforts on world hunger or something?

"I don't want to talk to a scientist, ya'll muthafuckas lying and making me pissed."

You have to be skeptical when it comes to what scientists say. You can't believe every little thing people say, otherwise science would contradict itself a lot. Especially when you look back in time at all the things people thought they knew. But really, you can't just accept everything someone says without looking into it just because they have a degree. You can listen to the ideas brought up, but don't just blindly follow it.

Because they are biased and they lie, well, at least some of them. How do I know? Well when some say they proved there is global warming and others proved there isn't global warming, you know someone is lying.
