The only real thing I'd want is a custom tagline, and that's not worth 10 dollars a year or whatever it costs.
The thing about the custom tagline is I don't feel that I've earned it. If I were a Publisher's Club member I would probably keep the stock ones.

I 100% agree with this post. I have better things to spend my disposable income (or lack there of) on.

It costs money. For what? Discounts to places I have never heard of, adds that are never longer than 30 seconds anyway and VIP content I don't care about. The only thing that I like about it is the unique title, but a silly thing like that is not worth 20 bucks.

EDIT: Pretty much

There really isn't a reason for me. For the most part, I don't spend that much money on non-tangibles. One could argue that $20 isn't that much but one of the reasons that my finances continue to be in such great shape despite life's occasional curveball is that I sweat the small stuff. You spend $20 here and there and that stuff adds up by the end of the year.

Even going beyond the money and the non-tangible reasons, I just looked at the benefits and they are all useless.

HD video: To paraphrase Yahtzee, I'm not going to think these videos are better if there is a 20% jump in resolution.
Podcasts and RSS feeds: Who cares?
Get a backstage look at The Escapist's production pipeline, including outtakes, behind-the-scenes, sneak previews, drafts, and members-only contests. : Don't care about the nuts and bolts of how they do it.
A custom title: I don't care about my title now.
Early access to upcoming site features: So I can pay to be a Beta tester?
Ad-Free: Meh. Some of the ads are amusing.
Shipping Discounts from SCIFIGENRE: I don't buy anything there.
A discount at Edges of Reality: I actually have two FULLY SHARPENED blades. I have no need for a replica sword that would be dull and useless in an actual panic situation.
Discount for New York Comiccon: Wouldn't go anyway.
Automatic Contest Entries: I don't bother entering the contests now.
Exclusive Member forum: So? Most of those people probably come out here now. Plus, while Gamefaqs may not be a good indicator of this, I find that most people in exclusive forums can be territorial wankers.
Ability to be part of a focus group and fill out surveys on the site's direction: Nothing that I would participate in.

In the end, I come here to watch the video and use the forums. If they put out a T-Shirt that I like, I may support them that way. But, even if I did spend money on intangibles, none of this would really entice me to join. I'm not saying all this to troll but that's just how I feel about it.

I don't care for anything that it offers. I'm perfectly happy waiting for their 10 second ads before a video, and the videos themselves are great even if they are lo-res, and I don't post enough on the forum to want a custom title.

lol
i'd like to have your problems

the reason why i am not a club member is that the escapist discriminates against people without credit cards^^
i use paypal and amazon quite often but it's useless if you don't have a stupid small plastic thing with numbers on it(or an online variant of it)

i'd really like to join but i wouldn't get me a cc just for this
if they don't want my money... ;)

p.s.
for everyone who wonders, i'm from germany and credit cards aren't common(or needed) here

Mostly because I'm unable to purchase things online, partly because I'm a man of the people and when the feature first came out I was quite strongly opposed to it.

I plan on joining once I have a little extra money laying around, so like in a month or two. I know you really don't get alot of extra stuff, but it's a nice gesture to support something you sincerely enjoy.

I don't regret becoming a member of the Pub Club, hell I did it the day it became available. That being said I can understand the 'no money' argument. I work full time in a well paying job now but I very clearly recall when a $20 purchase was the choice between that and eating for two days.
I did it because I use this site a lot, even though I don't post a heap, and I wanted to contribute something back to them.

I'm not picking on you here mate, you just worded your opinions the best so I'ma use you as an example-

This makes me wonder if maybe the Escapist crew aren't selling the benefits of the subscriptions enough. I didn't read the perks that carefully, as I said I was all for it right away, but some of the things you've stated above as not caring about are actually really cool but maybe haven't been explained?

IE: The backstage look at the production pipeline, out-takes etc.. That sounds boring as. What it really is? Extra videos, stuff that doesn't make the cut for ENN etc but is still funny as hell.

Just my thoughts.

Pub Club members also get priority on the Escapist Team Fortress 2 Servers

Escapist TF2 (PC) Group is here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC

That should be edited into the Pub Club Benefit page I think

Because I'm not old enough to get a debit card yet, and don't really have any other way of getting my money to the Escapist, short of sending it to them.

If I wanted to pay for a forum, I'd join Something Awful. Since I haven't bothered to join even SA (all my friends are there), then I don't see the value in paying for other forums either.

Besides, given the traffic here along with the high volume of adds, I'm not convinced that my $10 would be going to keeping my favorite site afloat as much as lining their pockets. I also don't like that it is a reoccurring cost. I'm probably grossly underestimating their bandwidth costs, but even SA has had articles addressing where your $10 goes. The least The Escapist could do is illustrate the same if they don't want me making such assumptions.

And quite frankly, I've seen quite a drop in quality from the members here along with some highly questionable mod decisions. Decisions that make me question posting this post as is, because I saw some one else state something not all too different from my post and they got suspended. Obviously it's their choice and right do to so, but one shouldn't be punished for expressing themselves civilly as I just have.

It doesn't have too many options, allthough I do miss having GIFS as avatars, and reoccuring subscriptions are always a pain.

Better question: Why are you a member? Kidding, but honestly, I don't have the money. I'd likely sign up if I could, but I'd rather spend it on other things.

I don't particularly value HD, and only occasionally watch anything in particular, so I'd not be getting enough use of the site for the price they're asking. And I turn the sound off for the ads.
