I have better things to spend money on. Custom tags are meh. HD videos are useless to a guy who's internet is so slow it takes 1 minute to load up 22secs of Youtube video footage at 360p.

Same same. As much as I love The Escapist, I don't have a job. Which means what little money I have goes towards games and stuffs. For example, I think I'll have to get Trine. It's $5 right now.
So anyone else who's been eyeing off Trine, it's totally $5 right now.

I'll tell you that the HD is a worthwhile reason. I see so many people here scoffing at it, little do they realize how much better it is. I even say this to people that are saying they just watch ZP, even ZP looks a whole lot better.

The title is awesome, I love being a Time Lord.

Oh and definitely one of the best things is no ads. At my university, the more a page has to load stuff, the more it racks up on the how much bandwidth I am using list that they have. The more internet I use the slower it gets. So not having to load ads is a great relief. My university's crap bandwidth rules are so bad, that it took me a week to download a game off of Steam. In a sense, it was like buying a game off of Amazon and waiting for it to be delivered.
Hang on a minute...

I have the money to get publishers club. I have never looked into it before, but now that I have I can't say that that it is worth £15 to me.

HD videos? The Escapists videos are fine at the moment.

Video podcasts and RSS? No thanks, I never can find time to watch/listen to podcasts and RSS is not for me.

Exclusive member content? An extra competition or 2 would be nice, but not worth the money.

Custom title? OK, you have me there. I'd love a custom title.

Early access to upcoming features? The only thing I have ever paid to alpha/beta test is Minecraft and there is a lot more value for my money there.

Ad-free? They are better than most sites I visit.

Discounts? Possibly worth it if you are American/collect comics/collect swords.

Reserved slot on the TF2 server? Never been. Might be a nice place and I should probably check it out at some point but I would never pay for a reserved slot.

And more? Pass.

I just don't see where the £15 goes. Sorry if this comes off a little annoyed, but the OP's assumption that it is inherently worth it because this is the Escapist annoyed me.

Because for 10 bucks I can buy a CD, and until I have every CD by every band I like ever, there will be much better ways to spend 10 bucks at any given point in time when I would consider it.

I've always wondered this since I noticed most of the escapist is not members, and always wondered why. For a whole years membership there not asking for alot of money and just the HD Video's and No Ads make it rather worth it in and of itself.

So I put it to you my Non Pub Club Escapist Comrades! Why are you not a member and what would make you want to be a member?

Edit: Linkie! http://www.escapistmagazine.com/registration/subscribe

This, preety much. Also, the benefits provided by the Publisher's Club aren't really compelling enough to warrant registration. HD videos aren't much of an upgrade from the standard ones and anyone who has spent considerable time on the internet has probably trained himself/herself to ignore advertisements (I know I have). The extra forum features are all trivial fluff and the discounts aren't worth much, especially if you live outside North America.

Quite frankly, the main reason why anyone would become a member of the Publisher's Club is not to gain access to benefits (which are, as mentioned, quite meager) but out of a desire to financially contribute to the Escapist. While donating something is always nice, whether or not people find it worthwhile to do so is another subject entirely.

Now why did you put those points I made in bold? I have a feeling that you did that because you are trying to point out that HD eats up bandwidth. It actually eats up far less bandwidth than people think, far less than loading tons of ads. If anything, the no ads cancels out the small extra bandwidth from HD videos and I still have a little extra bandwidth to spare.

Ever since I started using an HD TV for my computer screen, I have been watching everything online in HD. I get the bandwidth throttle down from my university only about a hour sooner than if I don't watch stuff in HD. Losing an extra hour is worth it for HD. No more fuzzy videos, they are all crisp and smooth.

I'm another one who's been disillusioned. I saw a guy who got on probation for arranging a post so that it looked like a giant penis. Fair enough. Another guy made a thread asking whether men or women are better at arguments, as if such a thing is gender-specific, and the vast majority presented their opinion that men are more logical than women as if it were fact. All I saw were a bunch of posts that looked like giant penises, and they didn't get any mod wrath.

So essentially I'm not fond of the community and I think some of the moderating decisions are ridiculous. Even if I liked this place a bit better I can think of more rewarding ways to spend my money.

I pretty much joined because I did have money to blow, and it was half price for the first week or so. I really like the little Pub Club forum (it's slowish, but friendly and I don't post enough in the normal forums to keep in contact with the people I've met), but if not for that, then no, I probably wouldn't keep my membership next year. The HD videos ARE lovely, but £15ish of lovely?

IE: The backstage look at the production pipeline, out-takes etc.. That sounds boring as. What it really is? Extra videos, stuff that doesn't make the cut for ENN etc but is still funny as hell.
Honestly, I've never watched a single extra video. Maybe I should go change that, I dunno.

The only thing from it that I would want is the custom tagline, everything else doesn't really bother me to the point of paying £6ish Especially since I'm on a tight budget until someone decides to employ me.

Most of the ads from the Escapist I see are still images (2 per page on the forums) so I find it hard to believe that not viewing them negates the extra bandwidth used by HD, but if that is your experience then I can't argue with it since I was just estimating. As for the value of HD, I guess I've never really seen it because I don't own an HD TV.

I wouldn't gain anything from being part of the club, I don't even notice the adverts on this site and don't care about the custom tag line.

I don't care about ads and HD takes too long to load. The only good thing about it is that it gives you a custom title, and that is actually worth the money according to me, mostly because I want to support this great website. But alas, I'm really, really cheap! Also, it's too much of a bother to write in my CC number or whatever. I think that's what most people think, even if they don't want to admit it.
