New updated roster of retarded looking pokemon. I can admit that the first 151 are awesome but nowadays... you have to admit that the designs are getting ridiculous.

My point still stands. 100 new pokemon but you only need 3 too win the game the rest are ust to fill your craving to collect everything a game has to offer. The games once were adding new stuff but now its its just a different place with the same gameplay, and story.

I never new that Pokemon had online play. Well thats new...[/QUOTE]

this is how you would be treating these pokemons if they came out in the fifth gen also in the fifth gen ALL POKEMONS ARE WORTH TRAINING also no one really cares about beating the game because it has tones of end game stuff to do try different teams try different move sets for your pokemon or jut have fun playing your friends I normally play every game for over 300 hours and most of it is just trying different pokemons.

Why do people keep buying Pokemon? Well mostly because the game play is fun and addicting. Yes the story is the same every game but why mess with something that works? The Pokemon games are just a turn based RPG to the very core. In my person favorite was the Gold and Silver generation. Then again no matter what I will always like Pokemon because it was one the the first games I ever played and owned. Weather you like it or find it repetitive is up to you. All gamers have a have a favorite game genre.

People buy pokemon games because they are sadists.

Sadists who like to inflict harm on tiny creatures, cage them in tiny cells, then force them to fight in little arenas for the amusement of the capturer and all the people watching the fight.

That and they are strangely addictive ....

That question is one of the many mysterious of the world. In fact my little brother who's list of video games he plays is made up of 90% sports games had to stop himself from playing them cause he knew he would spend the next three months of his life doing nothing with his free time but playing the game. Its a mystery neither of us knew the answer too, but one theory that my friends and I commonly agree with is that Pokemon has the most addicting form of grinding. Since so many games involve some form of grinding putting that repition of grinding into cute little monster forms proably makes it look less repetitive and more fun. While that does all go into what you think of grinding and RPGs it seems like a pretty reasonable reason to why so many people come back to the games.

Here's a few reasons why I think people love Pokemon games:

1:Accessibility
While it is true that Pokemon is intended to be for kids, that really doesn't stop teens and even college students from playing it as well. I've had intelligent conversations with children half my age about their Pokemon, which ones they love and what moves they know. Any game that has the potential of bringing generations together over a good, clean, fun experience is a great game.

2:Variety
Don't like a Pokemon? Fine, you've got about 600+ others you could choose from.
Think Pokemon died after Gen 1? Well, they remade Red and Green on systems that won't crash after extensive use, so go nuts.
Think it died after Gen 2? Again, remade with updated hardware, graphics and wireless battle capabilities.
Since every Pokemon has its own strengths, weaknesses and powers, you never really do run out of ones to catch, train, or make your favorite. Catching them all is very challenging and very hard to tire of.

3:Simplicity and Depth
This sort of works with my #1 thought. The premise is that every Pokemon has its own weaknesses. Exploit your opponents' and protect your own. That's pretty darn simple for kids to learn.
Then, you begin to study the stats and natures of Pokemon, how, because of natures and other factors, literally no Pokemon is the same. You try and build your Pokemon on its strengths and compensate for its weaknesses. You might even build a little strategy around your Pokemon instead of just spamming Earthquake. This is where the depth comes into play, the depth that gets the older crowd involved. Now, it's no longer a game of rock, paper, scissors. Now, with a decent strategy, a type disadvantage has a chance at success.

Finally,
4: Nostalgia
I personally grew up with the cartoons, cards and games. It is a part of my childhood and it's a part of my youth to. Like a tradition, so to speak.

There are probably other reasons, but this is what first comes to mind to me.

From a casual standpoint?

They still sell because the games are addictive and fun, and because each new itteration adds new pokemon to collect and discover, making the experience feel fresh, even though the basic framework is well-trodden.

From a hardcore standpoint?

They still sell because each new game that gets released adds ALOT to the competitive pokemon environment, even the ones like FireRed and SoulSilver, that technically don't add new pokemon, but give existing pokemon new moves. You'd be suprised how much a few new moves in an old pokemon's roster can DRASTICALLY change the entire competitive scene.

Everything looks better through the filter of nostalgia. That's why you're still buying and playing this stuff.

I've hated pokemon for years now. Not because it's bad. It's still good; it's just the same good. It's fun to build something with your pokemon. Name them. Make up backstories for them. Personalities (sorry, the one word "personality" thing is not engaging. I can do it better myself.). I've heard people saying that the end-game content makes the games worth it, but I disagree. Sure, all the battle towers and mini-games are neat diversions, but they bring with them an obese amount of tedious walking back and forth in the grass. Sure, devising a strategy that let's you best a tough opponent is satisfying, but for most of the game, battles are predictable, easy, and lame. (6 Magicarp? Why do you have 6 Magicarp?? ...And one of them's lvl 25??!??!) The main campaign is only a challenge (for anyone with a type chart that knows the difference between special and physical attacks) if you under level and purposely only keep 6-10 pokemon or round abouts. Besides, the bulk of play time is spent training. And more training. Some people get hard for that, but not me. Everything else is still the same.

And you know what? I call bull-shit at introducing new areas, populating them with very high level trainers, but making every new pokemon (new for that game) level 5 or w/e. Or worse, mixing high levels from earlier in the game with low levels new to that playthrough. WTF? It's just a huge pain in the ass.

I loved Gen 1 and 2, and I know a few of my friends really hate Gen 3, but I still liked it. Gen 4 however, I hated. Strangely enough, that's the one my friends prefer over Gen 3 when 1 and 2 aren't being considered. I do have high hopes for Gen 5 though. It actually looks really fun.

Also, I figure we still play the Pokemon games even if they all start and play out roughly the same way because they're just damn fun.

*looks up from HeartGold*

Because it's really addictive and fun. It does take strategy and with each version you have to plan your teams accordingly in order to beat certain gyms and the Elite Four.

Now, if you excuse me, I'm a few hours into HeartGold and I have to go and attempt to beat Whitney. Urgh.

*goes back to DS*

Even though I have stuck with the games since the first ones, nostalgia has never been a part of it for me(except for the remakes) but to answer your question

They are fun, a lot of fun and they change more than you think between games and are constantly improving, they games are not the same, only the concept it. and to anyone who says that the designs were better in gen 1 and 2, that's just your opinion and there's a very good chance that your nostalgia glasses are influencing that statement and every generation had stupid looking Pokémon.

The Pokémon games (the main ones anyway) require a lot more thought and strategy than most games do when playing with other people and in the battle frontier.

multiplayer, it is so much fun to challenge your friends or even random people who you see playing Pokémon and see whose team win and maybe make some friends through it I know I have making it good for social interaction.

nostalgia for some people.

and finally people just like it.
