Why do people from the US constantly complain about game prices?

We complain because we don't just sit down and take it up the ass when we feel something is unfair. Fuck you for asking us to be apathetic; we shouldn't suffer just because you do.

Seriously, it pisses me off to no end whenever I see people from the US who complain about spending $60 for a new game. People in Australia and Europe would kill to get those kinds of prices. Lets compare shall we.

StarCraft II listed on EBGames.com for $59.99 USD, the same for Halo: Reach. On EBGames.com.au SCII is $98 AUD, and Halo: Reach is $118 AUD... That translates to $88 USD and $106 USD respectively.

The RRP For SCII in the UK is 44.99 GBP which is equal to $70 USD. Halo: Reach has a RRP of 49.99 GBP, roughly $77 USD.

Seriously, you guys have the cheapest games in Western society. Stop complaining about it and be thankful you don't live in Australia or Europe.
Ok guy, Both of those prices are pretty damn high... We will complain if we want to though. Can you not rent games???

I remember back when every game was $40 NZ dollars.
Now we have games like Starcraft 2 hitting the hundred mark, and that's just ridiculous. It's a game, for fuck's sake. It's not worth that much.

Inflation has caused game prices to go up about every decade. They used to be around 40 when I was a kid, then it got up to 50 and now its 60 bucks for 1 game. That's pretty steep for visual entertainment, considering blu ray disks are only $30 at max.

Here's a question to ask yourself there Mr. Aussie: Why do people complain? If you can answer that question then you need not trouble yourself with this trivial matter.

Good day. :3

EDIT: And if you really feel that jaded about our gaming affairs, perhaps you should sail up to Japan and buy your games there. Can you say "lost in translation?" And if this topic really bothers you so much, perhaps the UN should put a ban on games altogether. Would that make you feel better?

Wow, that's some narrow minded thinking right there. I'm from Serbia, we have to pay higher prices for games than that AND our living standard is about 2-3 times lower than just about any of the countries you mentioned, probably more in most cases.

By your logic, that means those countries, and since you're an Aussie, that includes you mate, don't get to complain about your game prices, amirite?

Just because there's someone worse off than you doesn't mean you don't get to complain about something that's wrong, and frankly the prices on a lot of games are too much, even for US standards.

They don't get they're playing against their own hand either. The more they push the prices, the more people put on their one eyed patches and flip them off. Putting the games at reasonable prices would go a long way to combating that, but they're rushing off the other way instead, with the DLCs trying to screw the people who rent/buy used games as well. Oh well, the profit margins will teach them in due time...

Funny thing about economics, you can't just look at a price of one product and judge that a country "has it good" or even better, unless you take in all sorts of other information as well. Things like minimum wage, federal, state and local taxes, cost of living, fuel prices, average transit distance, public transportation feasibility and quality, cost of basic services (mobile phones, internet, gas, electric, cable), medical costs and various other odds and ends - including any additional taxes placed on specific products.

Even beyond all that, it boils down to something far simpler. No matter where you live, you create a budget that balances your income vs any expenditures, and live within those means. Any increase in those expenditures is going to be annoying, especially since it usually happens far before your income increases. So whether you have to pay $60 when you used to pay $50, $70 when you used to pay $60, or $118 when you used to pay $108, it's still $10 more you have to pay, and it's still going to be just as annoying.

But by all means, if you think we have it so good, and the average American has games coming out of their ears without making any other sacrifices, then you're more than welcome to come and live here. Although I'll say it's a great country, it's definitely not er... a utopia by any stretch.

One good reason, our economy is in the toilet and spending that kinda of money one a game is ridiculous right now. Hell spending 1.25 USD for a bottle of soda is almost too much. In may state alone the unemployment rate is about 10.5%. That's fucking high.
You also have to take into account the possible difference in taxes as well. I'm sure you pay more in taxes and/or it could cost the company more to ship it to Australia. Most of the game companies are in Canada or the US and the rest in Japan and other random places.
I've never heard of US gamers complaining of prices for games. I'm betting most of them are under 18 and living at home mooching off mom and dad with a minimum wage paying job if they're lucky.
basically sums up i was gonna say, you gotta really look into the numbers and stuff

you do realize the mass part of the gaming audience is from america/north america?

so giving us the cheaper prices is only a slight part of it, also because of LOCATION, most games/game developers are here in north america, so its much easier for it to be shipped and sold here to 'local' consumers rather than way the fuck out in australia (at least i think so?)

probably a whole bunch of reasons im overlooking, but i seriously doubt microsoft or anyone is profiting off of those raised prices in other countries, its probably import tax crap and the like.

Because some of us are cheap, and try not to lump all Americans in the same group next time, it's kinda offensive...
You are now the fourth person to need clarification about generalisation. Next time read a topic before commenting. Ciao.

Yeah why are Americans complaining? We Canadians are paying 69.99 + 13% tax.
Why are you complaining when Australians are paying $88?

You wanna know why everyone is complaining? The games aren't free. That's why.

All I see in this thread are hypocrites. "American shouldn't complain about their game prices. Look at ours. That's expensive!"

It's fine for people from one place to complain about prices, but not people from another?

And why exactly is this a nationality thing? And what makes you think all Americans complain about game prices? What makes you think that people that aren't from the US *don't* complain about game prices? Stinginess is universal, and trying to pin it down to just one country is foolish.

For my part, if I think a game is worth sixty bucks, I'll buy it. If not, I'll either rent it or avoid it. Not too hard to understand, is it?

And before you say, "But I'm not generalizing!" maybe you should have thought of that before you wrote the title to this discussion.

You are now the fifth person who thinks I'm generalising. Just like I said to the last guy, read through a topic before accusing me of something I haven't done.

You poor capitalist fools, all fighting for the right to complain about who has it worst in the getting screwed over department, all the while ignoring the fact that you are all getting screwed over. Why does the country matter here? When we divide ourselves by country we simply reinforce the idea of different country=different cost. If we simply went by gamer want games to cost X then we might have a better chance to make it happen.

Note the reason games are so expensive in Australia is due to the hazards of getting games there, have you seen the native animals? o_O

I also don?t see a huge amount of people complain about prices, mostly about how the games seem to stagnate. I am in the us and well sorry I guess I don?t fit your American of choice. I think again we may just be seeing the vocal minority on the interwebz. They may be small, but damn they can scream.
