They are far richer than they deserve to be.
Not really...The US had all the right resources, both natural and otherwise, to succeed in the 19th century. We had cash from trade, large gold and iron deposits, plenty of vast forests, amazing cropland, and it was all virtually untouched. We expanded, found more resources (such as oil), and continued to succeed on into the 20th century, where we were hesitant to join in on not 1 but 2 World Wars (We certainly weren't neutral, though. We took sides long before we joined in on the fighting. And we weren't the deciding factor in either war, though we did help largely through trade and eventually through actual manpower). To say that the US doesn't deserve the riches it gained is like saying the same thing about any other country: They gained riches through natural resources, trade, and war. The US is by no means unique in this regard, though it has managed to maintain much of it's riches, arguably due to capitalism (Compare the government to any major corporation in the US: Which of them is heavily in debt?).

Personally, the only hate I have towards my country is the government. It has become far too high-and-mighty for my tastes, and I'm afraid the world has suffered because of it. The politicians are all corrupt, the laws are outdated, and the general masses are somewhat ignorant of what all this entails. I'd wash my hands of this government, but I don't really have high opinions of anyplace else, government-wise. I'll just have to have my cake and stare at it longingly for the rest of my life...Or until somebody high-up starts a restructuring process...

It's because people are too ignorant to look past any stereotypes they've been force fed, and instead decide to judge millions of people based only on what they've heard, or the few people they've met.

The only thing you can do is shrug your shoulders and say "Who are they, and why do they matter?". The answer is "Nobody, and they don't.". Just as the opinions of the people of the United States don't matter to anyone else.

Kind of like how the British of old were hated. They were the biggest around. And the big ones tend to be big pricks.
.
Don't forget that many, many years after the US declines as the world superpower (like every other world super power before it has) the rest of the world will still hate the US, just like the majority of the world still hates Britain

well, I can say I dont like USA because of it's tendency to war, but to be honest, my true dislike for them is more personal, see
there was this time I went to the states (california, to be precise) as an exchange student or however you call it, school there was alright, but it was the rest of the city that put me on my nerves, everyone I came across shat all over me because I'm latin, ended up going fist to fist on one of 'em when shit hit the fan, broke him 3 ribs and he broke me my left arm, called to come back to Argentina a week later =P
now, I'm not generalizing about the whole united states people, but those days were the fucking worst days of my life

well the thing is we have the most affect on the world, so people naturally hate us. we have one of the best governments compared to others(not saying its great but comparatively...) and for the most part we dont try to get people to not hate us and we don't give a shit that nearly no other country likes us(which i deeply agree with, the UN fails for the most part) and just do our own thing. Therefore, other smaller countries cant pressure us to do what they want, and don't like it

Country
UK
Everyone hates the top dogs and wants them to fall, especially when they start throwing their weight around. It's why everyone hated the UK (including your ancestors), why everyone still hates the UK and why...hang on...OK, the guy above me [edit: now the guy 5 posts above me] and the guy he quoted pretty much said the same thing...dammit.

Hm... let's see.

We lag behind many countries in education, the wealth disparity in our country is the worst it's ever been, and we try to tell other countries what to do.

We leave in the biggest glass house and throw the biggest freakin' stones.

We view things that are commonly done and accepted in other countries, (driving on the left side of the road, metric system, universal health care, Islam) as 'scary' and 'the enemy'.

Oh, and Sarah Palin.

because we have been screwing around with world politics to protect our interests abroad(IE bananas and oil) and people tend not to like it when you destabilize a developing nation for bananas

I'm willing to say that if people got to know America's population we wouldn't hate you, but, you have to make us want to get to know you, and, your superiority complex does well to make us turn away from you, I.e, "We are the biggest" 1.) keep it to yourselves, the comment is despisably inaccurate. 2.) It's just boasting, like spoiled rich kids. and 3.) All you do is make us feel like your looking down on us, the point in that is? how can you claim to be so great when in doing so you don't inspire others to achieve your greatness because you fear losing the self proclaimed title of "Biggest", may I remind you that a grenade is smaller than the average handgun, yet, it's alot more destruction :D

Bill Maher and 2 both say it better than most...they should know because they are from the USA.

He points out a lot of home truths but doesn't take pleasure in it.

Funny as fuck but also kinda true. Much stronger than the last one!

Personally I don't "hate" America (I've been there twice and plan on going back again next year) but you weren't asking my personal opinion (Or were you? It's 2am and I'm drunk so I'm far from on the ball!) - you wanted some ideas why America is copping a lotta flak. I should also like to point out that while 2 hates the war, he has nothing but respect for the soldiers out there fighting it. Aside from the ones who filmed themselves shooting dogs for fun (and posting it on the internet themselves!) and abusing POWS...anyway...

Because we keep going further and further into a money fueled war machine state of mind.

Also, because we let idiots represent us.

But seriously, we don't need to spend as much money as we are on weapons and military products. It's ridiculous.

I really don't have an issue with Americans. I wasn't pleased with GWB's decisions as President, but then I didn't have to live under that. I didn't appreciate the conglomerates over there remaking "Life On Mars" without John Simm - because, frankly, he made that show awesome - but then if I don't like it, I don't have to watch it.

Then there was Fox and Firefly... I still get a little teary.

But then I think - this is the country that gave me Star Trek and gave geeks of the world Star Wars. There are many things I have to thank the US for. Johnny Depp, for example. Thank you, USA, for giving me Johnny Depp. It was very thoughtful of you.

So, really, I don't hate the US. I think the grand scheme of things that people just don't like the blaise attitude that some extremely patriotic Americans have that they live in the greatest place on Earth. You know what? I think my country is pretty awesome. It's sunny and warm most of the year and I'm not afraid to leave my house in the city at night. That's something to be appreciative of, too.
Not many in the US are afraid to leave the house at night either. It always seems to me that when we're talking about different countries, nobody is happy until someone else admits their country is inferior.

I love the United States, I can't think of another place in the world I would rather live. It is clear you love your unstated country, and I can imagine you can't think of another place you'd rather live. Since when is it a crime to think you live in the greatest place on earth? Does someone else also feeling like they also live in the greatest place on earth sully your own fulfillment?

We are both lucky to feel the way we do about where we live. o/\o

Why do people continually feel the need to tell someone else how shitty their home is? (Not that I think your doing this, just in general. You seem to lean more towards the live and let live side.)

I don't really care for us that much, especially for the fact that we keep boasting that we are the land of the free, but there are two things wrong with that.

1. We are not the only one. Many European countries such as France, England, Spain, etc. have around as much freedom as the United States.

2. To back up the first reason, though people may say that the previously mentioned countries are not truly free, it's not like we aren't completely free or anything, of course not!
Can you say: "Prohibited Gay Marriage"?

Also, we invade other countries affairs way to much. I know a lot of people died on 9/11, but seriously? Haven't we taken it a little too far by now? They attacked 3 buildings, destroyed 4 planes and severely hurt our morale. We have however, ripped away their government, destroyed many villages, and probably killed the equivalent amount of people by now and counting.

That went on a lot longer than I expected...

Because it's full of pompous, self centred faggots who like shooting at anything that is marginally different to them. It has the lowest intelligence scores for the education system. It has horrendous crime rates and prison overcrowding. It has a flawed governmental platform that offers the illusion of choice. They're responsible for triggering a financial disaster that served to put millions into debt and ruined the lives of many hard working people because some stupid bankers decided to delete some numbers on a computer.

It is the worldwide example of what humanity is and why it should be annihilated.

That bought a tear to my eye. Such a moving speech.

OT: I don't particularly hate the US, but it is sad that most of what Mr Montmorency said is true.
I can't argue much with that and I AM American. The only thing I would like to add to that is an all-consuming sense of cultural imperialism.

Naturally, I'm doing my best to be the exception to the rule.
