One Piece. If people here think Naruto has a crap story, they ain't seen nothing yet.
Actually, they butchered the English language version of One Piece, it was an award winning anime in Japan.
The story was better than the 4kids version right?

Also I wonder if people would hate Naruto and Bleach if they weren't so popular, in the same way that I wonder if they would hate Halo if it wasn't so popular.
I'm that if they weren't popular, people would just find them "meh", but people hate them because they don't deserve their popularity (same with Twilight).

I gotta go with the extremely overrated Naruto.

It feels like a whole bunch of badly developed characters not acting like ninjas. The action is crappy the story is crappy and the animation is OK at best.

Edit: By the way count the "best" version of the anime you select. Crappy Dub Job does not constitute an anime being bad.
i hate Naruto. And just to add in, my favorite, and in fact only one is Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.
May I ask why you hate Naruto, and not DBZ? Yeah, I'm calling people out now.
I hated Naurto and liked DBZ (for the most part). It could just be nostalgia talking, but DBZ had a certain... charm to it.

I don't know if I can explain the story in a post, so here's a clip of the Japanese version that should give some hint of the difference in quality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9Q7Dvfmouo

i've been following this one called Kurokami for 2 months now... erm ... it's really bad...
i haven't seen a single original thing in it, i'm not joking. if you've seen Shakugan no Shana and Fate/Stay night, which are awesome by the way, you pretty much know EVERYTHING about Kurokami.

Methinks Naruto falls into the same problem as popular video games like Halo. In spite of great popularity a lot of people don't seem to get what's so great about it.

When I initially watched/read Naruto I thought it was fairly average. What first stood out was Naruto's signature technique which I thought was an unusual choice for a male lead. Sasuke quickly hit the cliche male lead, possessing some boring fire techniques, so I almost felt like the series was a parody of cliches, including the fact that the only blatant kiss I recall is the one between two guys for comical effect. Probably the worst development in the series has to go to the female characters, at least until Tsunade showed up. The series really grew over time and gave seemingly shallow stock characters a decent roundness to them, sort of like what Kojima did with Metal Gear Solid before becoming too preachy.

To continue on the beaten path another thing I loved about Naruto was storylines. Like Dragonball Z, which I'd argue Naruto is a somewhat spiritual successor to, the series has blatant storylines that do a decent job of using an ensemble cast in spite of primary characters. There are no real one-off episodes (unless you count the anime filler, which I loathe) once the story gets going and its kind of nice. Plus people developing unique attacks helps characterize them and make them diverse, similar to the appeal of stuff like Heroes (a woman who wants to be strong gets super-strength, etc.). The awesome and varied stylish attacks also take the concept of the techniques from Dragonball Z to new heights by being more inventive thanks to the ninja theme, thus there are some pretty cool abilities that aren't necessarily for combat.

Finally, we have the protagonist. Naruto, a simple-minded idiot with great power and a decent amount of on his feet wit and understanding of his own limitation as well as balls of steel, is an ideal protagonist. It's because he isn't overly whiny (Kira from Gundam Seed comes to mind or that dick Shinn from the sequel) though he still is decently emotional and doesn't have blatantly strong charisma. In a way he's almost a parody of main characters as while he does possess decent charisma though seemingly stupid determination he isn't a stalwart hero like Cyclops from X-Men who's a bit of a dick. His character flaws also make him perfect for viewers to relate to as he doesn't seem to know anything unique to the universe thus exposition fits best when he asks, "Why this?"

Anyhow, that's why I think Naruto works. The action is decent, the animation is decent, the story is pretty typical but its all executed in a very compelling way which might be surprising to many.

If anyone mentions Hellsing or Elfen Lied
Haven't read any other post, but i saw this thread and this post in particular and i felt tempted.

Sorry to break your bubble. Yes, hellsing is awesome, but Elfen lied isn't.

When i first watched it, i was told it was one of the best anime out there. The word i heard most was "Deep".

So it starts with a song sung in latin. Wow. Amazingly deep. In the meanwhile, you get lots of shots at one of the anime's other strong points: their constant need to show Lucy naked. You can almost hear the producers yelling "THIS IS AN ADULT ANIME. THIS IS DEEP. LISTEN TO THE LATIN MUSIC! SEE THE PERFECTLY DRAWN CLEAVAGE THAT YOU WON'T SEE IN ANY OTHER OF THOSE KIDDY ANIME FOR KIDS!"

I saw the anime a while ago, so the episodes aren't quite fresh in my mind. But the first episode was enough to make my mind:

So there's this chick with red hair and convenient cat-ear-shaped horns. She's walking around with nothing but a helmet. She goes around killing everything in sight in - i confess - pretty creative ways (pen to the face at some point, i think). Then this emo dude shows up and surprise! she'll kill everyone but him! I guess she's trying to say emos aren't worth killing, i guess. Then she takes a sniper bullet to the face and goes amnesiac.

Change of scenario, same old clichés. Two cousins talking about the past. Male cousin with a tragic past: his entire familly got killed and he doesn't know who did it. Female cousin clearly with the hots for male cousin. Hmm, incest! Another sensitive, mature theme that only mature people may talk about in their mature lives filled with mature anime.

So they go to the beach, more melancholy emo stuff about a childhood filled with the joy of innocence, with (probably) some violin playing in the background. Suddenly they see the genocidal psycho walking around. They decide to take her to their house for some reason instead of taking her to the police. What once was a killing machine is now a wide-eyed virgin that can only say nyu. Her "innocence" serves as another plot device for inumerous misunderstandings related to her being naked! haha! I've never seen that done before! Noting the latin theme song, the emo setting and all that, it's clear they've met in the distant past. This anime tried so hard to be a modern greco-latin tragedy that none of the spoilers surprised me. That bit about the clock in the final episode is unintencionally hilarious.

Rest of the anime has some good fights between more naked cat-eared pink-haired women (well... underage girls with a trace of cleavage), more drama, more jokes about a willing (if you know what i mean), naked nyu. Then the bad guys show up, she decides to trip on something and fall headfirst, transform into the crazy psycho form and kill everything except the emo kid and some other people.

Entertaining to an extent, but not as good as people paint it. Not exceptional, but not unbelievably bad. Watchable.

But if you're looking for something bad, look no further than... uhh i dunno. It's all a matter of taste, really. But i do wonder how can naruto and bleach be so insanely popular if everyone on the internet + their filosophy book think it's overrated and unwatchable.

Note: I'm not a naruto fantard. Just stating the obvious

spoiler alert

I don't get that. If the majority of a group of people like something...then why is it undeserving of it's popularity? How is it overrated when it is popular?

I think it is not for what it is that makes it bad, but some treat it like a fad. Like when wearing bell bottoms in the 1970s was cool back then and everyone went disco dancing, but now-a-days we see it as being something that is stupid and overrated today. Heck, back then white people even wore afros which today seems....weird...except if you were Bob Ross. It also has a lot to do with the over exaggeration of advertising industry.

Worst anime I've ever seen is Fruits Basket, I just hate it all around.

AND enough with the One Piece hate, an American company butchered it because they thought kids were too dumb to understand stuff, so "hey, let's remove beer, violence and cigarettes, add some annoying accents and uh... piss on the story".
Fruits Basket keeps putting me to sleep... And I still don't believe them when they keep saying that the most feminine looking creature in existence is male.

I still hate 4Kids for making people hate One Piece. Even if they watch the original un-butchered version they still hate it.

I really hated Lucky Star. I love randomness, but when they spent what felt like 20 minutes talking about food, I wanted all those alien-eyed... things to die. Azumanga Daioh is so much better.

"Chiyo-chaaaan, why are you flying?"
"I'm ten years old!"

Now that is funny randomness. And the characters are cute, interesting, normal-looking and you can remember their names.

I didn't give The Melancholy of blah, blah, blah... much of a chance but I didn't like it. The story was really silly sounding and I absolutely hated the characters.

To heart, watched three episodes and nothing happened just a girl lusting over her childhood friends who acts like a prick all the time. It was like school rumble without out the weridness. Also any digmon after the second season and Morbito Guradian of the Sprit,it was boring and the kid had the same voice as beat from eternal sonata(i could barely stand it there).

On Naruto and Bleach: i foiud them to have decent fights and Bleach still hass some nice ones even though both are suffering from filler

I never liked Ghost in the Shell. All the dialouge just sounded like a bunch of technobabble, I never knew what the hell was going on.

I thought that Bleach was a very good and somewhat original show, but the quality of the anime really has gone down hill since the end of the Soul Society arc. The worst Anime I remember seeing though was .
I liked Bleach better when it was called yu yu hakusho and I liked that better when it was called Dragon Ball Z. (my point is the story isn't original it's been done before and better and not just on yu yu hakusho but also on lesser known shows too)

well anyway my least favorite anime go in reverse order
3. Angle Links (to be honest I only watched the first 3/4 of the first episode)
2. Naruto (I find the characters unlikeable they all fail epically as ninjas and WTF is with all the filler and cheap plot lengthening problems)
1. Ghost In A Shell (1 word boring I mean it didn't have flashy coma inducing lights like naruto and it's not a spin off of a much better show like angel links it's just bad theres no excuse)

and an honorable mention goes to Lupin VIII though never released they would have made Lupin a detective Jigen wouldn't smoke but most of all Goemon Ishikawa XVIII wouldn't have a sword and they need to be punished for that.

dragonball z is kickass if only cause it's the perfect stereotype (along with shaman king) of everything an action based anime needs
- a scene in which the main badguy proves his(or her) awesome power to everyone else in a random massacre with no relevance to the actual story - check

- the main badguy beating the crap out of the main good guy half way through but ultimately letting him live so that the good guy gets a chance to train and improve his skills - check

- a training montage - check

- multiple episodes in which the main character can't fight because he's been injured by the main badguy and is recovering giving the creators a chance to expand the supporting character's personalities - check

- a triumphant return by the main character - check

- an overdrawn dialog between the main badguy and the main character when they finally fight "properly" at the end of the series/saga which lasts an entire episode - check

- a final fight lasting at least two episodes - check

- some crazy moral guidance about friendship being more important than villany - check

- random filler until the next chapter of the manga is written - check

and the crazy thing is that dbz repeats this formula every saga, but every saga is epicly awesome so it's okay

A final fight at least takes five episodes.

- One where they meet each other.
- A second one where they talk.
- The third one is to show off their powers and hit each other a little bit.
- A fourth one where the bad guy almost kills the good guy.
- And a fifth one where the good guy gains super powers and kicks the ass of the bad guy.

You're forgetting the episode when the good guy's friends evaluate the bad guy and the good guy's powers

true, well put
i actually meant the episodes where they actually fight, though even in those episodes, there's little actual fighting

that too
it's kind of worrying how predictable some animes are
but it makes non-predicatble ones so much better

The Hakkenden dog warriors or w/e .
there is no doubt if you watch the complete series entirely sober u will go mental, no doubt at all.
i got lost about the time the dog married the princess and got killed by some fella that also fancied the princess wherupon a number of orbs came out of the dog which then may or may not have turned into warriors.
theres maybe more than ive seen to the series, there is a chance that it could become cogent but i doubt it with the same degree of doubt i invest in belief in my ability to spell.
the series as i recall seemed to take the form of enormous recaps that seemed utterly unconnected.
because my friends and i are rtards we attempted to rewatch it a second time some friends and i watched it on mushrooms in amsterdam as a dare to ourselves, i remember nothing but am assuered we had fun.
i got the vhs tapes stored in a box marked do not open.

when it turns out innevitably that i am wrong about everything i said please correct me not crucify me
