I can't believe anyone have said RAINBOW SIX

lets be honest: a good SWAT fps sim, in the sea of arcade fps is not a bad idea

Red Alert was ruined by the third one. It just didn't feel like it used to.

Rayman, as many others have said. I wish they'd at least re-release 3 (lord knows they've released one and two on everything that could be even vaguely persuaded to run them), since I can't seem to find my copy these days.

Also Front Mission, although only the latest game was bad. All the ones before it were fantastic, but whoever was in charge of marketing the series in the States was an utterly retarded howler monkey, so most of them never left Japan.

B) EA have defiled its fucking grave to make it in to an MMO...which is for the chinese only.
You can find gameplay videos of it on youtube. But you shouldn't, you really shouldn't.

I'm probably in minority here but I think the Elder Scrolls series has gone downhill massively since Daggerfall.

Resident Evil has been a bit of a bore. RE5 is great but not nearly as good as its predecessors.
Yeah, I'd say Resident Evil, as well. This flashy action shooter bullcrap is not what Resident Evil is about.
It pretty much went downhill with Code Veronica. And RE4 only made it worse.

YYYEEEAAAAHH!!!

In all serious The cod franchise and Final fantasy series are ruined now with all these crappy sequals. Also Metal Gear since after #3 when it became confusing and focused more on cutscenes then gameplay.

Devil May Cry, 1 was awesome, 2 we don't talk about, 3 was awesome, 4 started to go downhill again and 5 just looks terrible now that Dante looks like Marylin Manson D:>
Amen to that. Dante now looks like a crackhead and seems to have all of the charisma and personality of one (if what the trailers have shown us is correct). He beats the shit out of things while smoking and scowling... How dull. Devil May Cry 4 may have been a bit stagnant and repetitive, but at least we could count on the fact that Dante would still be a sarcastic badass. To make matters worse, every combat system made by Ninja Theory seems very boring and simplistic. Dante going off his angst medication could at least be excused if the game has solid combat, but at this point it looks unlikely.

Castlevania is another perfect example. If you have a well-received classic IP, do not turn it into a God Of War clone just because you though a new series wouldn't be as profitable. I honestly hope that Igarashi is currently hunting down and bull-whipping every member of Mercury Steam for turning his beloved franchise into a generic clone. The DS 2D Castlevania games were all excellent, why was this reboot necessary?

Lastly, I'm jumping on the "what the hell happened to Linkin Park" bandwagon. Hybrid Theory and Meteora were great albums, but ever since that rap compilation I can't take them seriously in the slightest. If you had a unique sound, why change it and turn into just another rock band...

Fire Emblem franchise is going in the wrong direction. The first game Fire Emblem(2003) was amazing(it's also my 2nd favourite game of all time). It was had original and fun gameplay, with a good story. The next game, Shadow Dragon(2004) wasn't as good. It was shorter, with an unoriginal, but well presented story. It also made a gameplay change I disliked. Most of the character felt generic. Fire Emblem: Path of Radience(2005, I think) was a step in the right direction. It wasn't as good as the first Fire Emblem, but it was better than the secound. It also was the first one on console. The story wasn't as unoriginal as the secound, but not as original as the first. Their were great steps taken in gamplay though. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn I have not finished. Fire Emblem:Shadow Dragon(2009) was the worst of the series. Bad story and less gameplay features. It's still an OK series, but lost the standard it started on.
SO true, it's sad to see my favorite series go to waste.
I think they tried to experiment and it backfired. In Path of Radiance, and Radiant Dawn. The new magic system was not really any good and the laguz, meh.

Let's see...

Metroid went to shit the second they made Zero Mission and started introducing crap like the Zero Suit, the only purpose of which was to make Samus look as sexy as possible to please the underage fanbase and looks far too much like something out of Neon Genesis. There was no need for such a poor design, especially when I've seen official artwork of it (sketches and such) that showed it looking a LOT more acceptable and toned down. But nooo they had to go in for the "HEY CHECK OUT SAMUS's ASSETS, GUYS!!"

Then we got things like Pinball (and I like that genre) which was just garbage, and there's Hunters but we don't talk about that one, and then Other M which took the GOOD idea of giving Samus some pertinent dialogue (ala Fusion) and then infecting her with diarrhea of the mouth so she could whine, and ramble, and cringe and whatever the fuck else Sakamoto was forcing her to do. Gods, I just wanna strangle him for ruining the series...

Apart from that, though? Final Fantasy hasn't been the same for years. I was disappointed in FFVII... VIII had a good idea with the romantic storyline, but the paradox material was written poorly and only served to confuse things. IX was decent, but the art style didn't work and I was upset that they decided Bahamut was no longer capable of deciding who summoned him and let people abuse his power. Zidane was a terrible main character (not unlike Cloud) and other characters like Vivi got second billing even though they were clearly better. As has been said X was terri-bad at the end and needed a freaking sequel (which sucked cause it was overbloated with fanservice) just to give it the ending it should've had to begin with.. and then there's 12? Oh gods...

Really disappointed with the video game industry in general, to be honest. The majority of the series I've known since I was a child in the 80's have turned to crap I can't even finish due to frustration (at what it's become), bitterness, and disgust. The one Megaman game I've been dying to see for years, Legends 3, was the one game they just wouldn't give us. Then I hear it's starting up but the guy who made the Legends games is gone now so I just KNOW it's going to be garbage like most series who lose the lead creator/designer.

About the only series I still have faith in is Phoenix Wright, and that faltered a little when they made Apollo Justice and ruined Phoenix's career.

Command & Conquer by far. I'm one of those old-timers who started playing it right from the first game, and the last few games have been one let-down after another, culminating in the absolute pile of shit that is C&C4.

I'd say Deus Ex, but maybe the new one will inception my memories of the second iteration.

Also, Resident Evil and Silent Hill, both after the 3rd game.

Oh, and Guitar Hero after the 'Rock the 80s' version (Metallica was still good though).

Kingdom Under Fire. This game was an amazing RTS, and then the 2 games on the Xbox were amazing RTS combined with hack and slash and they were perfect games. But then when the 360 came out and they made a new Kingdom Under Fire game it was a horrible hack and slash game that made no sense, killed the characters personalities, and just wasn't fun at all.

I disagree with that castlevania comment.

Most people who thought that lords of shadow was a god of war clone were people who couldn't get over the fact it wasn't at all metroidvania like.

Plus if most of the haters actually bothered to play the game, they will realise it has more to do with the early 3d castlevania games, prince of persia, and the early 2d games especially Castlevania 4 on the Snes.

Its a very good transition to three dimensional for the series in my opinion, especially considering the god awful previous 3d Castlevania incarnations.

(I don't count Modern Warfare because that's when it started reeking of little idiots and became the "pr0 n00b killa h4rdc0r3z g4m3rz" bullshit. though the game itself is not bad at all)

as for movies

Ah thank you, now I didn't have to post that myself. :)

Most of my favorites have just guttered out and died (Tribes, Descent, Chrono Trigger/Cross), but I do know of one series that sticks out so directly:

Squaresoft's "Mana Series".
Secret of Mana and SD3 are two of those games where you can appreciate the aesthetic just as much as the gameplay (shallow as it can be). Legend of Mana sought to add depth to the game, but ended up having huge difficulty curve issues (it was FAR FAR too easy and exploitable) and no real underlying direction for the "plot".

Still, it had the look of an ambitious game on the PSX that just couldn't do everything it wanted to and had to be released before its native system went kaput (the PS2 was already out when the game was released).

The rest of the "mana titles" are entire flops that failed to capture any of the ambition the previous titles had. Hell, as a bit of trivia, Secret of Mana had shockingly high production values because it was meant to be a pilot game for that failed system attempt between Sony and Nintendo. The game had to be scaled back so that it would play on an SNES, though you can still see snippets where the graphical and audio quality shines; it's MUCH higher than your typical SNES title (Secret of Evermore, which used the same engine has PHENOMENAL audio sampling for an SNES games).

Of course, Squeenix has systematically run every franchise they created into the dirt, save for Kingdom Hearts (which I personally cannot stand past 2). "Mana" was just the first victim to fall, that's all.

Command and Conquer, no debate. I even loved both Tib wars and generals, RA3 ofc too. But C&C 4 went somewhere where it should not have. I seriously want to see what bullshit EA is gonna throw at us after that.

Final Fantasy. I would've said after VII, but I actually remember really liking X, though I haven't played it in years and years. And in retrospect, VII reeeeally went off the rails, especially compared to the masterpiece that is VI.

While I can think of a fair few franchises that have gone downhill, it doesn't tend to bother me so much. I just move on to other games while fondly remembering the earlier ones.

The exception to that, however, is Halo. Bungie severely screwed up the great formula they had as far as multiplayer is concerned, and it bugs me because there's no ready replacement.
