Sure there's usually stuff they could have done better, or just not done at all (im thinking of you annoying escorting your friend to dinner missions in gta4!)

But stuff like that has never been a game breaker for me, and ive had tonnes of fun with every rockstar game ive ever played.

Im unsure about the molyneux comparison though, i never really saw any of their promises for their games so i wasnt really let down on the final release

So I often hear a good friend of mine complain about Rockstar, he compares them to Peter Molyneux with all of his empty promises.

I want to know what others say about the company, their games aren't really the issue here, just just whether you think they are as good as some think, or if you hate them.

Just putting this out there, DON'T go all fan-boy on me, or say how you want to buy anthrax and stamps, they're two sides of the same extremist coin.
In an industry that needs more depth, more art and meaningful questions... Rockstar is part of the problem. They squander all their talent away on making games that are to gaming what a placid lake of piss is to nature. I'm not a conservative christian nut, but I am an intelligent person, and Rockstar's games are an insult to our intelligence. Sure, we shouldn't seek to eliminate all games like that from our catalogues. But Rockstar have never attempted something deeper, not even once.

Their game's bugginess on the PC doesn't help either.
I think RDR was deep in places, The Jimquisition and Extra Credits have both talked about gender issues (in their own ways at least), and I think that Bonnie Macfarlane was a step forward for gender issues in games, she didn't fit into either of the stereotypes, she was a damsel in distress or a ***** with a flaming claymore of death, she had very really qualities about her, which the game shows all over, unlike GTA, RDR isn't 1 big dick & fart joke.

I'm not a great fan of the gameplay - I'm not quite sure why - but Rockstar make the best open worlds.
Period.
Everyone else, and that includes Just Cause, Far Cry, Saints Row etc. are horrifically inadequate children compared to Rockstar when it comes to creating a sandbox, even with the 'Oh but its too serious' criticism. They are simply too good at creating worlds.

Also, in my personal opinion, the GTA series is the best piece of satire in the 21st century.
And I can't bring myself to dislike people who write that well.
^^ Everything said here. I was skeptical about their turn to the more serious, but then they released RDR and L.A. Noire. Criticism silenced. They do it damn well. And, as stated above, the GTA games are probably the best works of satire in the last twenty years, at least in the English speaking world.

Guys, LA Noire is gonna be released on PC, it's not easy to port.
Look at GTA IV, the port wasn't that good at first, they were worried about red dead and LA noire. Red dead won't be released on PC though.

Anyway, I love rockstars games. The gameplay is fun, the graphics are amazing, the story is always amazing, and the voice actings really realistic.

My only problem is GTA IV's FUCKING DIFFICULTY SPIKE. I struggled to complete that, thank god for cheats. I mean, the games are hard, but very fun, LA noire really mastered difficulty, while red dead was too easy.

I think they are one of the best developers out there at the moment. They have developed a particular type of game: free-form, sandbox sort of deal but with a good story and well-written dialogue. Like Bioware and Bethesda, they don't tend to experiment much, they stick to a formula, but it's a formula they practically invented and they are very good at it.

Release RDR for PC already, sheesh!
PC gaming is what got them started, so why let us like that now? :(
L.A. Noire's announcement on PC is good news, though.

I like their games, but the stories I hear about how they treat their employees are more then a little concerning.

I really liked GTA IV though. I've racked up well over 140 hours accross the orginal and expansions and I still come back to it occasinally. Red Dead was great too, but it's not really as replayable as GTA IV.

I can't comment as I've neglected their recent games. GTA IV failed to hold my attention for very long; Red Dead Redemption slipped past me and I've got no motivation to buy it now. LA Noire... was developed by Team Bondi but published by Rockstar, does this count? Either way I can't afford to buy it.

I loved GTA Vice City and San Andreas however. Perhaps they've become so unremarkable to me because they stopped making games in that vein, I don't know. They seem to be quite the definiton of average now.

I don't remember ever having a problem with Rockstar. I think they're one of the better developers in the industry.

Hate them for dropping the PC market. Other than that, one of the finest gaming companies in the industry.

Well they make open-world games, which I love.

But they also have a reputation for being unfair to their employees, which I hate.

Nice games they surely take their time to make the games but the games are nice and usually do not ship with allot of bugs and problems. It is a very smooth experience with them then again I play them on a PS3 so!

They get allot of hell for making "violent" games. Seriously seriously.. there are more violent games out there. Just saying, there are some way more deprived games out there.

Sure they did have that snuff movie game but so what they have other games to. Is riding over a hooker in GTA that much different from putting a gun to someones head and blowing a nice dirty hole in it? ... Bingo

I haven't played L.A. Noire or Red Dead Redemption or anything, but I have played pretty much every GTA game.

They deliver decent work, I liked GTA: Vice City a lot.
And they always get the soundtrack right.

My only problem is their exaggerated privacy and security policy, especially at game conventions. On the main floor or behind closed doors, just ask around - they won't exactly try to make you feel all welcome and at ease, that's for sure.

I dont particularly like Rockstar I mean I want to but I just dont like many of their games GTA3,Vice city, GTA4 (didnt play san andreas) just felt the same, create a massive world then think ah crap lets put some junk in there escort mission here race here package here it just dosent feel organic to me never played Bully but Manhunt was very poor I took it back after the 6th level.Im looking forward to trying red dead properly sometime in the future and the table tennis game was surprisingly solid but generally no I dont like them and I feel they are hugely overated its like they can do no wrong even if the game is average it gets great scores sorta like original star wars and godfather films yeah they are ok even good in places but dont deserve to be placed on such a high plinth.

This. I love many of their games. RDR was one of the best gaming experiences I've had in a long time. However I abhor their treatment of their employees. I know people who worked on that project and can confirm the allegations Rockstar Wife set forth. This treatment isn't a fluke; it's corporate policy. A former coworker of mine interviewed with Rockstar corporate and asked them about it. Instead of the expected, "We understand it's a problem, and we're doing X to solve it" he got "We believe this is the only way to make great games".

No kidding.

Rockstar are easily the best developers, in terms of all around quality. Amazing gameplay, beautiful world, emmersive atmosphere and few bugs.

Empty promises?!Whaaaaaaat?
Anyway,Rockstar makes some of the most fun games EVER,they have the GTA series, the Max Payne series, the Manhunt series, the Midnight Club series,so much awesome stuff going on!I haven't played the Midnight Club series or Red Dead Redemption though(not too interested in the first and the second isn't out for PC),but I simply can't wait for the PC port of L.A. Noire!I mean,it wasn't completely made by Rockstar, but if it weren't for Rockstar,it would have NEVER seen the light of day,so yeah, hopefully it will be good.No idea what your friend has against Rockstar and why everybody goes so hard on Molyneux.Yes,Fable III is not really good,we get it.But Molyneux's job was making it look good on paper, which it did,and let's not forget that Fable(the first one) was pretty decent.

their online servers could use some work on but other than that i enjoy their games, however L.A.Noir should never have been a free roam game, it has a very linear narative, the same could be said for Red Dead but new austine is so facinating

I agree that the online servers need to be sorted out, they really suffer there.

Beyond that...I got nothing, they do what they do and they do it very well. I think there's little variance in the base of their game worlds but the rest of it is always very different. Familiar but without being the same, it's well done.

And eh...what broken promises?

GTA series is one of my all time favorites, but i'm a bit upset about GTA 4's optimization on PC and it doesn't seem like they want to make games for my platform anymore, so the level of my fanboyism has dropped substantially over the years. They still make great games but i have no way of playing them.
