Also i can say my worst was bioshock when your led into a room with bandages on the ground until you reach a tonic, when you pick it up and the room gets really foggy for a sec or two, and then you turn around and theres a splicer, right in front of your face. Shat my pants but not really. I just hate those jumpy bits, in games and movies alike. Sufficed to say, that being my biggest scare in a videogame i havent played many scary games.
This. My mate and I were playing it, he was sat behind me because I was terrified beyond belief, and he realised before I did. I turned around in game to see the splicer, who didn't move, so I didn't move. I got tapped on the shoulder and began firing wildly, after squeaking (this is the only word to describe the noise I made) like a scared puppy. I've not got to the statues yet. One step at a time.

For some reason the fight with the super soldier in the arctic in NOLF2 always scared the shit out of me.

What encounter in a video game really freaked you out. Mine would be first seeing Regenerators from Resident Evil 4 easily. I mean come on, invisiblity, glowing red eyes, ominous hissing! So please share!
I found nothing about RE4 scary, I might be one of the only persons in the world that hated the game :\

The dogs from the first RE1 was terrifying at first, and the leapers towards the end of the game freaked me out to no end.

Silent Hill 1/2 was also a dreadful experience, mostly because of the fantastic atmosphere.

Realms of the Haunting is also one of my favorite scary games, much thanks to a fantastically creepy house, dimensions and an extreme difficulty.

Manniquan bit in Condemed. Or the locker bit in Condemed. Man that game was awesome! Or some of the things in the Penumbera games.

Resident Evil 1, that one invincible first generation hancuffed zombie that you down and then it gets back up...

Of course it beats your skull in at one point, then promptly ignores your body until you get back up.

I think her name was Jessica or something...
I remember when I was about 8 or something and I played that. The part that scared me though was the first time you see a zombie (and theres the cutscene or whatever)

It's going to sound sad, but the first time I watched my friend play Resident Evil 1 (the original PS1 version) when Yawn the snake attacks you in the attic. I was an incredible coward back then and have always had a big fear of snakes. Not forgetting the Hunters. On that note, the updated RE1 on Gamecube. When you run around the corner of the corridor where the shotgun room and toilet is, there's a hunter. If you're running in from the shotgun room end and you turn the first corner, it has a view of you from the window that shows NOTHING of the main corridor. Soon as you run around it, a hunter leaps you and has a high chance of instantly decapitating you.

Scared the crap out of me...

Games I was playing? I'd have to say Fatal Frame too. Some of the times I turned to take a picture and have it flash a ghost with a loud scream...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet but...Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. What other game is there that was so terrifying it made you not only lose your sanity in the game, but feel like you were losing it in real life whenever you tried to save only to have the game tell you your save was being erased? This game screws with you on a whole other level.
^this....even aside from the game screwing with me, the first time i played it my friend says "oh yeah you need to pick up that towel on the bathtub" "oh ok" *BAM* *falls off edge of couch*
Some of the best parts in that game is actually when you play as Dr. Maximillian Rovias, something about it, they seemed to upped the ante on some of the sanity effects and there are some unique that area. The best part is when you read his medical journals and listen to him describing them. Mmm his fear is delicious.

Pyramid Head, drenched in blood, looking at you from behind the bars in the appartment complex in Silent Hill 2. *shivers*

Hitman: Contracts;
During the misson to infiltrate some hotel, you get a brief encounter with a ghost, something that scared me more then anything ive encounterd yet in a videogame. sure, doom 3 had its peekaboo-moments, stalker was nervewrecking at times, resident evil could spook you something fierce but nothing had me so unprepared as that sudden blue "thing". i think mostly because you werent really expecting it in such a shooter. in a horror-game, i feel that i end up just shooting everything that moves after a time, but in a sneak-shooter.. really not expecting it.

ahh, forgot that bit, perfect anticipation and if you just had seen Carpenters "The Thing" it really added to the run-run-run-run-for-pete´s-sake-just-ruuuun!

i mean.. it was huge, clearly not friendly and.. it had a laserbeam attached to its freaggin head!

Dr. evil would be proud, possibly a bit wet around the nether-regions.

I agree. They were the most fucked up enemies in that game. Two moments in Resident Evil 2 really stand out in my memory. The first was shortly after entering the police station, in the first save room, when you passed a small window on your way out a licker crawled past the window. You only saw him for a second but it freaked me right the fuck out.
The second would be when the floor collapsed underneath you in the library. I know it was a bit of a cheap scare but it was damn effective!

i didnt really get freaked out, i have just had the monster-jumping-out-of-the-closet trick get me a couple times

once in F.E.A.R. 2 i had turned around to meet alma face to face and jumped a little bit, another was in Condemed in the mall level when the guy reaches out for you over the railing from the stairs, i literally jumped OVER my computer chair

the most that got me the most was when i had barely cleared a room of like 20-30 guys in Resident Evil 4 and turned around to face a guy i didnt expect to see there. i screamed at my computer, dropped my controller, and sat there for a second, shaking, as the adrenaline rush passed

I might get some Flak for this, but there was this one special encounter I will forever remember because I was so freaked out, I was shaking for a good 10 mins afterwards. This was about half a year ago. The game? You just lost Doom 3.

Yes, I know, I know, the very pinnacle of jump out scare games practically had me shitting my pants. Don't judge me. Anyway, I often play through single player games quite a few times over, and I was amazed at just how much little extra stuff that they managed to jam into that game that I had still missed even after a good half dozen playthroughs. One will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Scenario: Delta labs, the one area with the Conveyor belt with the Imp's in test tubes that give off light. You know the one. Anyway, after the tube turned a corner (and I put a rocket into an imp's face) I noticed a plasma gun lying on a box. I facepalm myself for not seeing this obvious trap, but I went and grabbed it. The result? The most terrifying 15 seconds of my life. Floor dropped, screen turned red, dramatic music, 3 imp's start tearing me a new one, I shoot a rocket point blank (Killing the imps and leaving me with around 15 hp), and quickly get the fuck out of the hole.....only to find that the tube is long gone leaving eveything pitch black, and the sound of 6 more imps all cry out for my soul from all around me.

I survived the encounter (Barely) but the worst part of the game (In my opinion, the conveyor belt is the most unnerving part for me) just got a metric shit ton worse.

Fatal Frame 3,
Just almost anything from it rips any other game.

I hardly flinch in RE games (still scary), and Fallout 3 was a little scary but I could deal with it.

Yet, Fatal Frame is the only horror game I've had to put down the remote and walk outside in the sunlight to stop myself shaking. I haven't been able to finis it cuz it just destroys my nerves.

There's like disfigured hands reaching from the walls and ghost corpses that crawl and freaky kimono ghosts with gigantic screaming mouths, and they teleport around so you never know where they are going to attack you from. Plus you ned to focus to actually survive and I just couldn't.

*Still gets creeped out thinking about it*

A few actually...

SH1: The first time you see a flying thing out of the corner of your eye. It was a WHAT THE DEUCE OH MY GOD I WANT TO STAY IN THE CAFE kind of fear.

Condemned: That was more of a 'where is he, where is he' kind of fear.

As for jumpy horror I'd have to say when I first played Half Life, I was young, and it made me jump a couple times!

Most of Condemned 2 (never played the first one but I intend too), each encounter with those giant fish with arms in Half Life 1 (their name eludes me at present), the entire second level of Primal and any intrusion into water in Morrowind and Oblivion - As you may be able to guess, I don't like water in games but I can't swim and water monsters are creepy....

There's a part in Condemned 2 where you're in a cabin in the wilderness.

Then you get attacked by a rabies-crazed bear. That you can't kill. And that kills you in one hit. And that's covered in blood and runs faster than you do.

So, yeah.

The stupid fast zombies from Half-Life 2. Especially in Ravenholm, where Father Gregory tells you to survive around 20 fast zombies. And that happens twice!
