Hmm...you mean like a class EDUCATING them about SEX!? Yeah, that WOULD be a good idea wouldn't it?

But what on Earth to call it...

BAH! Teens don't need to learn about sex they still play with their toys and think the opposite sex still has cooties

Odds of the female offspring (let's say 45 out of 90) of these girls being pregnant before 20?

When nobody teaches about safe sex, and nobody has condoms, this happens:

Horny = Sex. They do not know better, because nobody teaches it right.

Wow. Back in '05, when I was pregnant with my son, my school district was criticized for having a counselor who went to the schools in the district and worked with the parents to be. It was rare back then, and considered the worst sin in the world.

Now...90? And people are still trying to claim that abstinence only education works...Stupids!

What? 90? That's crazy. I think there might have been a girl pregnant once in my high school years. Maybe. And one was in grade 9. But 90? Yeah, sorry, this is just so completely beyond me. I hope the kids are all right.

This is why we should distribute condoms like candy.
I approve of this. It saves money and I don't get pissed off glares from the granny-aged cashiers.

Question just sprung into my mind - between those 90 girls, how many fathers are involved.

I'm betting the number is going to be less than 90.

Probably less than half. >_<

We have been talking about this a lot at my school recently, about teenage pregnancies and the like, how expensive they are, and how most of the men in the equation dont help at all. Its pretty disgusting.

That said, its both of the teens fault. I haven't lost my virginity yet and hope to not lose it until college.

That must be traumatizing, I feel bad for pretty much everyone involved... except maybe the fathers...

I also really, really hope that none of those girls were freshmen.

Wow. That's crazy. I can't believe I used to live in Memphis...[footnote]Well, actually I can, because the right parts of the city are awesome.[/footnote] I hope I never end up in a school like that...

Sounds like a good place to live if you ask me.
Until you take into account that all those unmarried teen-aged mothers are either going to swell up the well-fare budget or engage in career criminal enterprises which would drive the property values down. And most of them will bring their children everywhere, who will usually be crying/whining.

from the Story, its not so much as the girls in question are pregnant, so much as they are pregnant OR have children, this year.
It doesn't say how many of those already born were from previous years, and the total amount is 20% of the student female population, so there are actually a majority of the girls listening, though that statistic is still alarming.

As for the 'abstinence education' comments thrown out here, there are two things, first of all, there are multiple programs inside and outside the school apparently promoting safe sex and/or abstinence, at least thats what I get from the story.
Secondly, the article brings up the scary point that these girls may be trying to get pregnant on purpose. At that level of psychosis, no amount of education is going to help. Hell, you may even be handing bits of information may 'help' them (admittedly far fetched on my part.)

*potential opening of a can of worms*
So please, avoid knocking the school assuming its under what you would consider 'propoganda'. I myself like to think 'Don't do it, but if you do, for the love of Uncle Sam do whatever you can to avoid messing it all up'

*moving on*

All that said, this is disturbing, all those children (not the preggys) are probably screwed now. Such a waste of human potential all because some kids wanted their jollies off, didn't use protection and/or are psychotics.

Psychotics?!

You do know that girls are raised with babydolls teaching about being a mother waaaay before they are old enough to have sex? The idea that being a mother is something awesome is pumped in our brains by adults from very early, so don't call a teenage girl who wants a baby a psycho, plz.
It is the same people who teach teens 'abstinence only' and sex before marriage = sin, who make the dolls and teach that women are there to be a mother above all.

Hey, this is America, baby, and we're number #1 at everything. Teen pregnancies, abortions, abstinence, being number #1, being the worst, winning, losing, etc.

Nobody can compare to our all inclusive skill set.
