Almost anyone from Heavy Rain evoked some kind of emotion. Well, except maybe
Mad Jack that rich bastard[/spoiler}.

Lirum's death in Lost Odyssey. Not only is it the most emotional moment early in the game (something about finding her just as she's dying of a terminal disease just brings tears to your eyes), but they put you through the full funeral for her as well.

Some of the short story segments (A Thousand years of Dreams) are truly tear inducing and emotional as well, aided in part by pitch perfect musical scores.

The Death of Saren and Vrex dude.

Saren, because his body was being controlled by Sovreign, his brother had died in the First Contact War, and because I was able to convince him to like, off himself. I felt enough sympathy for the character to wash away Oahu bra'.

Vrex, because he was so bad-ass, and his death from Ashley came as a complete shock. Needless to say, on my many playthrough's, I like almost always choose not to save her at Saren's awesome cloning base.
I had the EXACT same situation with Wrex... I hated Ashly so much for what she did, especially since I used him all the time. It the decision to leave someone behind was supposed to be a hard choice... apparently not for us, though.

I always enjoy threads like this :D

SAD
It is disturbing how much I think of these characters as living, breathing people but god save me I love them all. It tears me to shreds to contemplate any of them getting killed.
Poor Eli, 'nuff said
A single man-tear when Dom had to kill his wife.
The ending made me very depressed. As annoying as he was, I liked Tidus a lot and to see him sacrifice himself so willingly was very emotional.
When Gaz and Soap were killed, I very nearly flipped shit. Shepard you BASTARD!

HAPPY
When Miranda was killed. I hated her character. It was also badassery when the Arbiter impaled the Prophet of Truth.

That's all I can think of for now.

Father Grigory from HL2, unless by some miracle he's not a zombie.
Uh, Father Grigory doesn't die. It doesn't actually show what happens to him, but he's such a badass that you can guess that he's still 'tending to his flock'.

Everyone has a sad character, but nobody has a HAPPY death.

Let's bust out Star Ocean 4. From the very beginning this character starts to get on your nerves. Every failure on your part is a personal insult to him and every success is 'proof' of his greatness. In an organization filled with competant, motivated personnel it is hard to imagine putting a piece of shit like this politician in charge...

Deputy Director Shimata: It's sad that an entire moon base had to be blasted out of existance to get him, but I jumped up and shouted, "ABOUT FUCKING TIME!" when he finally got toasted. Yeah, there might have been something in that game about fighting the grigory and saving the universe, but I saw the game as a means of ridding earth of deputy director Shimata.

Might as well throw in a sad death too: Gremio from Suikoden 1. He gets eaten by flesh eating bacteria in order to save your life. Yes, you can get him back with the 108 stars assembled by the endgame, but it's still a touching end for a dedicated servant.

I thought *spoiler warning* maria from Gears 2. I rented it and got up to that point and every 5 seconds Dom would cry about her, now i felt when he did i finally had a good reason to feel the compulsion to hit him to shut up he killed her.

When you're dragging Joker around the Normandy for EDI I screwed up and Joker got raped by Collectors.

I was really surprised and thought Joker had permanently died and started freaking out.

For Stargate Atlantis:

Carlson Becketts death in Stargate Atlantis would have been beautiful to me if I hadn't managed to spoil it for myself reading a Stargate fan-site. A wonderful character departing in a wonderful episode in a wonderfully touching way; to bad the whiney fans had to fuck up this amazing, positive step for the show.

I don't really know what happend to them, but the Midnight Riders-as you an tell from my avatar. I'll just list them as M.I.A. though. And Jimmy Gibbs Jr. Ellis was so sad...and finally, Every boss from MGS 1 2 & 3, just for being awesome.

Hmm....well...A lot have already been mentioned. The boss from MGS 3 (just imagine the world had she lived) Wesker from RE5 (not so much sadness as it was a relief. FINALLY) Grom from WC3.I know RTS's aren't expected to have strong characters, but god-damn it, I loved the bastard.

Hitman Blood Money-47's canary. It did nothing!

Fallout 3- That research assistant that Colonel Autumn gunned down in cold blood. It's extra sad because if you talk to her before and ask why she's helping Dr. Li.

"Well it beats ending up facedown in a ditch somewhere."

Although it is funny for the irony.

I never could bring myself to exterminate the rachni in Mass Effect. It reminded me too much of Ender's Game.

Movie wise, the end of The Wind That Shakes the Barley is really bad. Same goes for Black Book.

Maes Hughes in Fullmetal Alchemist. I don't cry easily at TV shows/movies/whatever, but I sobbed for a good half hour after watching that episode.
James Sunderland in the "In Water" ending of Silent Hill 2. See above: I don't cry easily, but this one got me. It probably helped that this was the ending I got the very first time I played the game. XD
Raziel in Legacy of Kain: Defiance. At the end of a three-game-long journey, what does he do? He sacrifices himself for the sake of the guy he hates! And he does it by possessing the corpse of a guy he hates even MORE! On the one hand, it's sad as hell; on the other, it's freaking AWESOME. That scene both warms my heart and shatters it to pieces.
Pretty much every major character who died in a Drakengard game (and that's most of them) had completely awesome deaths. Especially Leonard in the first game ("Death need not be the end of hope!") and Urick in the second. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Zhangpo in Drakengard 2 had the lamest death ever. Not only do we never get to see his pact-beast...not only do we never even get to fight him...he gets taken out OFF-SCREEN by a single un-pacted woman. That is complete bullshit.

You didn't actually specify a video game.

Anomander, Wisky Jack and Toc from Steven Erikson's books.

Video game deaths aren't usually as emotionally impacting as books.
