That's not actually suicide, though. I think I heard somewhere that it has something to do with something screwing up their brains.
They're not trying to kill themselves, they are just kind of spazzing out.

I am far too exhausted to actually research this so forgive me if I am wrong.

*Hugs for everyone* I have had a few experiences with it, my dog who I grew up with had to be put down, he was old and very, very ill and had bad arthritis and could not walk or run. My cat who I grew up with had to be put down, he was suffering from a gum disease and other illnesses. We could not save the animals, and we would rather not see them suffer as they were, they don't have the same understanding as we do about illnesses, it is more humane to stop their suffering then let it drag on.

Animals get ill just like we humans do, and when they are that ill, it is more humane to stop their suffering completely then to let it carry on and to make them suffer more, it is not fair to them to keep them living when they are just going to be living a life of pain. They are family too, and to watch them suffer is horrible, just like it is with a human family member.

Oh wow I didn't know that about dolphins, but then again with studies in Behavioral Psychology I have come across certain notes and outlines clearly stating that animals will do whatever is necessary to get out of suffering at the moment. Well noted

This has really gotten me down, since I grew up with this dog, and now he's gone.
I couldn't even say goodbye, since a friend of my family was watching over him...
Sorry if I'm getting you guys down. My question to you guys is: Have you ever had an encounter with death inside the family or pets?
Edit: Treatment wasn't an option. It was a form of cancer that was inherited from his dad...
she was 12 years old and the cancer has spread far beyond being treatable.
Basicly every organ was infected.

Last night, I dreamed that my dog was there- in my dream, she somehow didn't die, but was still ill. She was on the couch, and I knelt down to eye level, and scratched behind her ear in the way that made her paw the air a bit. I'd forgotten what her fur felt like, and how warm she was.
It'll be a year the day after thanksgiving.

I know this is odd, but I really suggest grabbing something of your dog's. Something fabric, or a bit of their fur if you have any. The smell just puts you at ease when their being dead really hits you.

But you did the right thing man. You took your pet out of it's misery rather than continue to drag it on by putting it through a process that probably has a 1 in 1000 chance of actually working.

So I know this sounds really corny....especially coming from an Evil Bastard such as myself.
I'd like to think that in a way, your dog would thank you for doing what you did.
Trust me Death happens to all of us and it's the final moments and decisions you make that really matter, whether it's a pet or relative or even a friend. Hell I'm dreading the day my cat will pass on.

I was there to lose my Great-grandparents. I've lost several pets. 3 Escaped of which 2 got run over by a car. 1 Never came back and probably died somewhere (It was very shy and afraid so he probably hid somewhere). Lost 3 more cats to cancer and recently a kitten born here to VIP.

Since we breed cats, there are inevitable miscarries. One so far, and up to 4 kittens that died right before or slightly after birth.

My last grandmother recently drowned. This is so hard to swallow. Drowned of all things.

Rest in peace.

Same basic thing happened to my cat about a month ago. Total kidney failure, blood cells in the back of her eyes ruptured and blinded her. She had a week to live. I'm moved out and she's with my parents but I grew up with her. She was 14 years old.

Just remember your dog for the good times you shared, and don't think of them as being gone, but free of pain
