I say that the guy was just an asshole who had too much time on is hands.

And that Doctor Wolfendale is completely fucking retarded. We say things like "I got hurt" because it's easier to say that than "The digital humanoid 3d model representing me in this virtual space has taken hostile fire." It's not that we think we are the avatar, it's that we don't see a reason to qualify that it's the avatar that got shot. Anyone who really can't tell the difference between the real world and a game shouldn't be playing a game to begin with.

Oh and when we say "I got insulted" it is us that got insulted. Maybe the good Doctor needs to sit in a pregame lobby sometime. I'd love to see her convincingly say that the 10 year old boy talking a bout doing her mom is talking about her avatar's mom.

IMO, she's more insulting than the idiot frat boys who think sitting in a corner and pressing one button all match is skillful.

Both are worthless morons in my book. The guy is just being a dick and the girl is reacting in a pointless way that cheapens genuine acusations of the crime.

Although it is a little silly to say that you were "Sexually Assaulted" in a video game seeing as sexual assault can only pertain to physical violence, she has a right to her voice. Sexual harassment is wrong, even in video games and as a somewhat feminist (I only say "Somewhat" because I don't agree with the organized feminists that think the best way to prevent misogyny is to use misandry) I think that it should be put a stop to. I used to be in a "Mature" clan for TF2, but I left because not only did half the members treat my wife like shit, replacing "Newb" with "Its okay, girls just suck at video games" and the straw that broke the camels back was when a moderator in the "Mature" (They claimed to enforce maturity, being grown up and having fun rather than competition and not insulting others, hurr hurr hurr) heard my wife talking over the mic and not only said "Learn to speak English, Jap *****" he made the comment "You Jap girls are only good for being raped." This didn't sit well with my wife, and the fact that you can't sue for sexual harassment on the internet seems wrong to me.

But on the other hand, as I said, you can't be "Sexually assaulted" in a video game, not in a literal sense (There are of course rape "games" for the sick and fucked up, but the girls are virtual so it still couldn't be taken as literal assault) and putting it that way sounds, and I hate saying this because of my stance on the subject, it sounds stupid.

Doesn't anyone read "Game experience may change online." Unless this is her first time online, she should know that there are absolute titwanks on the internet anyway.

This is a larger problem then it seems to be, it shows how video games are becoming an extension of our lives but we shouldn't let it go too far. I don't want lawsuits to happen because of a team kill in left 4 dead because that's were these video game harassment suits seem to be heading

Sure, it's annoying, but sexual assault? I have to say no on this.

Shame on the newspaper for even spending time on it... Sheesh...

Anyway, why is the crouch emote still in games, not like anyone uses it for anything good...

If this is what passes as sexual assault, then I've been assaulted myself a countless number of times while playing online.

I'm not sure what bothers me more, the fact that this is being perceived as a "Sexual assault" or the fact that people like this "Whoef" douche and pseudo-psychiatrist Dr.Wolfendale adding fuel to the fire with their attempts to vindicate this obviously repressed and seriously over emotional girl.

This is nothing more than knee-jerk reactions to immature behaviour and a chance to grab some headlines. If someone is so deeply offended by that kind of thing then they have two choices, TURN OFF THE MACHINE or GET OVER YOURSELF.

Sadly, we know that assholes like Jack Thompson [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zznBw6IPN04&feature=related] are most likely going to jump all over this, citing more unscientific evidence that video game culture is destroying our society.

Maybe if we stop talking about it, it will just go away on its own...

But I doubt it.

The problem here isn't that someone is being a whiny *****, or that people are immature, or even that people get teabagged in halo all the time.

The problem here is that here is a girl who was essentially harrased for the heinous crime of being a A GURL ON TEH INTERNETS. Realistically, weather or not you consider the game world to be "real" or not, no one should be expected to sit and allow someone to harrass them just for existing.

Because in this situation, all she can do is quit. She can't get up and go shoot some guys in the face or make an attempt to redeem herself from the humiliation of being sexually objectified in-game. She has no recourse, except of course, to run away and be properly shamed for attempting to particpate without being a sexual object.

This isn't assault on the level we'd expect in the physical world. Translate these actions to the real world and it IS assault and harrasment. Home is trying to live somewhere between the game world and the real world, which translates this behaviour from "harmless fun" to sexual harrasment.
People of all genders deserve respect, be it online or off.

I know this is your first post, and you're obviously unexperienced with the Escapist, but... That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. It is not harmless fun, I agree with that, but what it IS is harmless idiocy. Not sexual harassment.
Hey smart guy. What do you call harassment dealing with sex or gender? I'll give you three guesses, but only three.

And yes Halo players t-bag eachother. Sports players slap each other on the behind too, but is it the same when they do the same to a woman?

Point being people are being alienated due to gender. That's just lame as shit.
Put this in your pipe and smoke it.

There's two kinds of people who are alienating girl gamers. The ones who go completely out of their way to impair the enjoyment of mainly or only, not just sometimes, female players, and then there's those who jump blindly in front of them to "defend" them, who just cause more problems in the short and long term. This is a practice I think is called white knighting, it's really annoying for me and I'm sure it is for girl gamers everywhere. Telling people to leave us be and let us enjoy the game only works if you leave us alone too, OK?
I don't even need to say anything.

EDIT: Actually, I will say something.
I'd quote this properly but I'm in the edit page now so I can't be assed, I'll give credit later: (This isn't word for word mind, I can't remember everything, just the gist, and it's from my perspective now) Even claiming this is sexual assault is a disrespect to the people who have actually been assaulted in real life and who didn't have an off button. They were actually raped. This is just some whiny kid. A lot of them were assaulted without protection and... I won't even go on. You're just being a white knight, as a certain certain someone said.

I'm sick of these wankers screwing with girls in game and people in general. These are really a more sexually repressed version of normal trolls and griefers who hide behind the ambiguity of the internet to simulate things they not only couldn't get away with in real life, but wouldn't have the bollocks to either!

It is in no shape or form rape. By the logic used in the article an obscene phone caller could be tried for rape.

But if the guy starts game-stalking her and constantly doing it then it could make a case for harassment. Very different.

I wasn't "white knighting". I was calling you out for being stupid and saying stupid things. The sex of the original poster really has nothing to do with it, please go ahead and read through some of my previous posts where I've defended points of view regardless of gender (I do enjoy however that this is the conclusion that you and your girlfriend would jump to though. Says more about you folks than me I'd wager).

To the second part, read the original post you responded to. Saying how this isn't 'sexual assault'. There we go, I think we've covered all our bases here, don't you?

ps: I honestly really want you and your girlfriend to think on this one for a minute. Isn't it sort of funny that me defending someone elses post is suddenly an issue only when that other poster is female? If it was a guy posting the original post, there would be no such accusations. HMMMMMMMM
