Final Fantasy VII was a time and place thing, those who love it do so for their memories of playing the game. Even when they go back to it years later it’s a nice reminder of what they experienced the first time around, which is almost unarguably good game.

Those who didn’t play FFVII at the actual time it came out have very little right to bash the game, simply because they will never experience that ‘first time around’ feeling.

So it’s a bunch of people with rose tinted glasses arguing with a bunch of people who will literally never know what it was like to play the game in the time setting it was meant to be played in.

I loved Parasite Eve 2, but I can never get my friends to play it purely because it’s old, it doesn’t wow them, and rightly so I suppose.

So yeah, a time and place thing. My advice to you would be not to play it. You’ll never have the experience we had way back when. Sorry about that.

Yes, it is that good.

Actually, I haven't played the game. I just like messing with anti-fanboys.

Yeah, it's probably a big overrated, but what mainstream game isn't? Aside from Chrono Trigger, and I shall smite any who offer an opinion to the contrary.

FFVII is an awesome game. I wouldn't judge a game until you've played it yourself.

I loved FFVI but it just doesn't compare to FFVII. The story and game experience are just amazing.

I'll be straight with you, OP: You've played Final Fantasy I-VI and liked them. Therefore, you'll love VII, because it expands and improves everything that the previous six established. You're going to love it. It's a given. There isn't a single Final Fantasy fan who can honestly say they didn't enjoy VII.
Ugg. Don't you ever make lies about me ever again. I loved I, IV, and VI (the only three I had a chance to play before VII came out). VII was disappointing. Squaresoft tried to hard to make the game look pretty (by 1997 standards), they kind of missed what the previous Final Fantasies stood for, a damn good story. I can't say that I enjoyed it, just that it was worth playing at least once. I don't see myself playing through the game again, unless I really want to beat Emerald Weapon.

The question is this: Are you going to be honest with yourself and admit that you liked a popular game? Or are you going to jump on the bandwagon and say it was "overrated" even though you loved it, like about 60% of the Final Fantasy fanbase?
Wait, saying FFVII is overrated is a bandwagon now? I must have started that back in 1997 then. There are other games in the series prior that have better graphics, other games that have a better story, and other games that have better gameplay. The reason it's hyped so much is that it was the first RPG for a lot of people, and it showed that Sony can hang with the big boys in the console market.

To answer the OP's question, in my opinion, it's not that great. If you liked the Final Fantasy series so far, give it a try. It's likely you'll be disappointed, but you might as well give it a play through. I mean, you did make it through II.

No, imo there is no such thing as a good turn based combat game.
Now I wonder where you got that opinion from... Considering, you know, the forum you're on.

Also, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, FF6 (ATB is pretty much Turn-Based, since you can pause the action), ZoE: Fist of Mars, Fire Emblem 7 and Advance Wars.

That's just off the top of my head. And now I have a bald spot thanks to you. I'm sending you my Rogaine bill.

Also, I'm including a link because I'm listening to this song now and it is awesome.

One might say that this describes the average Escapist's reaction upon realizing that I have arrived to post in a thread. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XTolid5SaY]

if you've played any of them beyond 8 (so 9 and up.), then it won't be as good as it was made out to be. good yes, but it will leave you disapointed, much like i was when they got rid of the "level up" system of improvment, and instead put in the "micro managing bullshit" method

7 simply had one of the best stories, characters, and atmosphere put out
not to mention the gameplay, which is also well done
naturally it's a bit old school, like the graphics

Well, it does have the standard JRPG issues of slogging through random battles all the time, which is one issue just about all JRPGs have (except for Chrono Trigger, which is why it's still a top candidate for best JRPG of all time).

I vaguely remember the story being good, but I had a really hard time figuring it all out. That may have been a problem with the disjointed presentation inherent in the format more than anything else, and the fact that a good portion of the story was found in optional side-quests and was related to the optional characters (Yuffie and Vincent).

Aeris's death, in addition to being very sad, was also a big fat cockslap from a gameplay standpoint.

On my first playthrough, I remember beefing up Aeris into my big magic-user, someone to sit in the back row and be on healing and summon duty. Then, after leveling her up with the same dilligence as all my other characters and being very excited finding her ultimate weapon and her kick-ass ultimate limit break, the game has the gall to take her away from me.

Now I have to force the rest of my protagonists, which are all a bunch of melee-oriented meatheads, to try to muddle through the magic stuff as best they can! This is why RPGs hardly ever kill off player characters in the middle of the story, because it's FUCKING BULLSHIT!!!

I always love when people make points like that. "Everyone liked it, and if you say you didn't you're a liar." My favourite was FF8. I really never got that into to 7. It has nothing to do with it being popular, most games I love are popular, my favourite game is Mass Effect.
No, no, I'm not saying it's a classic just because "everyone liked it". I'm saying it's a classic because it expanded upon the gameplay concepts that the previous six established, and boasted a great story to boot... Just like every Final Fantasy that came out before it, and every Final Fantasy that would be released after. That's my point here: At the end of the day, it's still a Final Fantasy game. Turn-based, roleplaying, guys named Cid, airships, magic and summons. If you, as a Final Fantasy fan, are saying you "never got into it", you're essentially claiming you never got into any of the others, either.

Unless you just hated the storyline that much, in which case, I apologize.

Final fantasy 7 is good but it's not the greatest.because while it was fun it's story was bad, while it was the first 3D final fantasy it looked ugly, the game was heavly customiseable, but you could easily omniclass one person and be overpowered, some bosses were pretty difficult but the final boss was a joke on how easy he was.

That's why final fantasy 7 was good but not the best.

I know the whole downfall of Final Fantasy games has been discussed ad infinitum before, and there's a big consensus that FF games started sucking after the move to 3D, and I'll agree to a point. I wasn't a fan of FFVIII at all, and played, but didn't necessarily enjoy the ones after that. My favorite is still FFVII, because it was amazing, (screw you guys, world of ruin had just as much story, it was just a bit more sandbox and exploration than linear)

FFVII though, in my mind can only be described as Epic. I can't help but think you may have shot yourself in the foot a bit by reading the plot summaries before actually playing the game, for that you no longer have the pleasure of enjoying the unexpected plot twists. That aside, I think the game really excelled in being fun to play. The immersion and setting is outstanding, although not exceptional by todays graphical standards, despite the fact that you can clearly see the polygons characters are made up of, It all looks good. Much like in older games, where sprites where given loads of attention but still left your imagination room to play, the polygons and lower quality 3D modeling doesn't detract from the feel of the game, and in most cases, gives a very stylized art feel.
The game is epic, hands down, not only a benchmark and major milestone in gaming, but the game has a fantastic length, in which characters are built up, back-stories explained, and a wide web of storytelling devices are used. This was put out before games started being truncated, and shortened to appeal to novice gamer crowds, and shrinking attention spans in the casual market. And this isn't because the game is drawn out in any way, it's jam packed with story and content, not to mention a brilliant host of minigames thrown in to keep variety, most of which are astoundingly fun for their simplicity.

I mean, between the character interactions, the great battle system, the loads of items steadily increasing in power in a very well thought out curve, the story, the minigames.... all of it, was enjoyable to the last drop, I could ramble for days extolling the virtues of it all, but boiled down to brass tacks, the game contains a level of polish not seen in most games today.

I'd say it would be a shame not to play this game, especially based on a negative thought about the graphics or the story, heck, pirate and play the PC version if you must, but trust me, it's worth it to be a part of the list of games you've beaten.

I tend to judge my games based on the gameplay experience.
Games should only ever be judged by gameplay experience!

For me, FF7 was just to emo for my liking. I tried to play it, I really did, but I felt like slitting my wrists if I had to hear one more person ***** about the state of the world.

Although I admit FFVII isn't my favorite of the series despite being the title that introduced me to it, I have to say that you should play it for yourself before pronouncing final judgment.

(woohoo really bad 3D)
That's because in those times you should have been happy that you had 3D at all.

I wouldn't know how it compares to any other FF (except from trailers), since it's the only one I played.

It was great but not by today's standards. It was a benchmark game for console rpgs. You look at an rpg today and compare it to FF7 you will see alot of similarities. 60+ hours of gameplay (and not 55 hours of grinding). All the minigames in the casino. A story that consisted more than just a big baddie gonna destroy the world and kidnap helpless princesses. That is all "the norm" today but back then it was unheard of.

...Did you just copy my post, then call me unoriginal?

Wow. The irony in that is astounding. Please don't respond to me unless you have something good to say.
