kane and lynch 2: dog days (that game deserves to be purified in the fires of hell and never spoken of again)
People say good things about the Kane and Lynch games? I was under the impression they were mostly hated games with a cult following.
yeah but they get so much hype and advertisement from the game developers and really bad reviewers. im sick of seeing it advertised everywhere

I'm a bit weary on the praises that Half Life 2 and Portal is getting. (OKAY, so they're awesome, even I as a Valve fanboy can get tired of hearing repeated praise for a game released years ago)

Dare I utter the words "Knights of the Old Republic"?

My husband just downloaded this for me on Steam in his billionth attempt to get me to play through to the end, and I just don't get it.

Yes, the characters are good, but I'm more than 10 hours in and still completely uninterested in the story.

My husband always says how easy the interface is to use, in particular, how much better it is than the diabolical control system in Neverwinter Nights 2 etc etc, but I find the controls so frustrating and annoying, not to mention my petty gripes about the typeface they picked, meaning I have to play with my glasses on no matter how close I am to our 40" TV.

Yeah, KOTOR has plenty of good points, but I'm sick of fucking hearing what a classic it is. I'm a Star Wars spod, and I still can't find it in my heart to like it.

Kotor gets better after the first planet and keeps getting better 'till the end. Which was awesome.

on topic: GTA, it's way overrated. 98/100? It just isn't that good.

Any of the Halo series. I am so sick about hearing about them.

Yes, I've played them. Each one is exactly the same as before, but with one new flavor added to the dull pot of porridge.

Halo: neat
Halo 2: wow, dual wielding guns. *yawns*
Halo 3: Wait, so I can pick up the gun pod? That's it?
Halo Reach: Whoopie, we all gonna die. Oh, look, jetpacks for like 10 minutes.

I'm not even gonna comment on ODST or Halo Wars. Played 'em, hated 'em. And couldn't care less about the multiplayer. I played it for each, and it's pretty much the same FPS multiplayer game that's out there for every other game.

And it's sad, because I love FPS games. Could have been epic. First game came close, but all the others were simply carbon copies. And over time, it actually detracts from the game.
wow, you clearly give into the hype every installment, dont you? stop playing the games and stop whining about them.
No hype involved. I'm one of a rare breed that believes in forming my own opinion on something, instead of simply taking the word of others. Guess I'm just strange that way. Can't really help that my opinion seems to be similar to so many others that have played those games too. Probably a reason for that. Might have to do with them playing the game as well.

I don't typically play/avoid a game due to the hype. I try to let it stand on its own. I wish others could do this, as well.

Portal, Bioshock, and Mass Effect. All were really, really good games, but seriously, after hearing the same praise over and over again, it gets old. Oh, and Final Fantasy VII as well.

Shadow of the Colossus.

It's my favorite game in the world and, personally, one of the greatest artistic achievements I've ever seen. But the fact that everyone can name THAT ONE AND ONLY THAT ONE game is kinda sad. There are loads of other magnificent games out there, and SotC only encouraged me to search for similar experiences.

Mass Effect 1 & 2. Zero replay value.
You've gotta be kidding me. Zero replay value? That is simply not correct. Would you say the same thing, then, about every game ever that has an ending? "Why would I wanna play it again? I've already seen the ending."

So maybe I'm putting words in your mouth now. But still; your statement makes no sense whatsoever.
Perhaps you should try playing some good old RPGs like Planescape Torment, original Fallout series or Baldur's Gate to get the feeling of non-repetitive gameplay mechanics. That's how good games make replay value, instead of Bioware's HURRRR MOAR DLCs.

ME 1&2 were complete shit for me. Also, no immersion. Right now I'm playing Fallout New Vegas and it's a bit on a buggy side, but still I can't stop playing it. Unlike Fallout 3 or any recent Bioware or Bethesda game.
I have actually played a couple of them classic CRPGs, so I understand where you're coming from with this. But I still don't understand your logic. So maybe Biowares more recent games, like Mass Effect, are much more streamlined than the older ones, like Baldur's Gate.

But the thing is: depending on how you play in the Mass Effect, it will have a different effect on ME2, and ultimately ME3. That's where the replay value lies. Your Commander Shepard will have affected the whole universe in both great ways, and subtle ways. I would like to say that ME is a more refined roleplaying experince than BG, in that the interesting part is the interaction with other characters, rather than a huge world filled with side-quests. Of course I like that kind of freedom too. But why not enjoy them both?

Also: you say you're addicted to New Vegas, but you didn't like Fallout 3. Aren't they practically the same game?

Popular games are popular for a reason.
This is true, but sometimes the constant hype becomes bigger than the game.

I love Final Fantasy 7. It's my favourite game, I've played it start to finish over 30 times since it came out, and I do not get bored of it.

Still, saying that to any other gamer is embarrassing. Everyone seems to assume you're on a bandwagon formed on years of "it's great" comments, regardless of whether you played it at release or not.

Some games, (Final Fantasy 7, Halo 3, Portal as good examples) seem to go through cyclic "badge of honour" status in public opinion, it first being "cool" to love them, then to hate them, then to fob them off as something that never deserved to be enjoyed, etc etc.

It should just be enough that a game is good, but a lot of posers really don't see it that way.

I know a guy who spent months telling a group of comic book nerds how awesome The Watchmen film would be, despite never having read the original novel. He believed all the hype, and looked a twat when he was forced to admit he actually hated the film.

Oblivion. I Enjoyed it at first and then totally lost interest and I just don't get the appeal to do endless sidequests which are ultimately the same thing over and over. Go to place X, kill monster Y, collect item Z, return to start point. And the story was so boring. It's the same fantasy archetype they've been craming down our throats for years.

Both Mass Effects. Both games are poor Gears of War clones with a piss poor AI. The plot wasn't good enough to warrant me playing through either story to the end, while the first has a better plot the second is pure tripe with 1 story arc (in a game that supposedly referred to as epic).

Seriously, this whole thread is just a continuous series of people whining needlessly.
Like how you're doing, for instance?

My picks would be:portal, Halo Series, Final Fantasy series. The first is a good game, but people should stop reacting as if it's the Holy Grail, same for the second. As for FF? It has been stagnating for a long LONG time now.

It's pretty much common knowledge that Rockstar games pays for excellent reviews. I completly agree that GTA4 was at best 7/10 (Ill give the 2 expansions 8/10 I highly preferred Johnny or Luis more then Niko).

Morrowind
Fallout 1,2 and Tactics
Minecraft

Maybe it was a mistake, but i played Oblivion before Morrowind and Fallout 3 before 1,2 and tactics, so they suck.
I'm sure these where great games at there time, but crap, lets move on !

Minecraft:
Well i have it, i build houses, mines, halls, underwater homes, all great stuff, good concept, but it gets boring fast.

I'm wondering are there any games that you DO think are worthy of all the hype, praise and/or sales BUT are mentioned so often that even though you'd admit they were great games that the constant praise of the years is starting to become an annoyance?
Seriously, Escapist readers should be better than this.
People just like to hate full stop. Most are probably thinking up of answers after reading other user's posts.
