Mass Effect.
Actually I think Mass Effect is pretty underrated, compared to Modern Warfare or Assassin's Creed, games that Xbox users glorify constantly. It's an important game, to say the least. Any xbox owner should play it, even if they despise it.
I think the entire Street Fighter series in general people need to shut up about. There are far better 2D fighters that don't hold the franchise name. Really, we should pay more attention to Guilty Gear or Blazblue, far superior and far more interesting games.

Sick of hearing about how bad the driving sections were in Half Life 2, they were the best bits in the game!

I like how 95% percent of the people posting in this thread failed at reading the OP's topic:

I'm wondering are there any games that you DO think are worthy of all the hype, praise and/or sales BUT are mentioned so often that even though you'd admit they were great games that the constant praise of the years is starting to become an annoyance?
Seriously, Escapist readers should be better than this.
People just like to hate full stop. Most are probably thinking up of answers after reading other user's posts.
Haha, I guess.

This thread is like a 10-page monument to readers that fail at reading comprehension. =)

CoD 4/MW2 - Oh God, don't get me started on Black Ops, it hasn't even come out yet and people are treating it as the second coming of Jesus.
Halo - I like Halo, I just don't find it incredible.
Team Fortress 2 - It's fun for a while, but I just found it repetitive, and I'm a valve fanboy.

Finally, not Half-Life 2 :D *Look at Avatar*

Any of the Final Fantasy games.

(And now, please excuse me as I give a reason for this to hopefully avoid being flamed down for not being in the majority.)

The fan base is huge and I can see why some people would be interested in it but I'm more of a fan of substance over style, and substance is probably the main thing any of the FF games are lacking in. Overall nothing has really drastically changed in the way any of the games played and because of how all the main characters were Mary/Gary Sues/Stus I couldn't really hold any sympathy for them or give a crap about their quest. The basic elements of gameplay don't feel visceral or involving enough for me to fully (sorry for using a Yahtzee term, people) immersed in the gameplay because I have to select everything from text boxes and all that does is remind me that all I'm doing is selecting a bit of code to start an animation and calculate some statistics.

On the flip-side, take a look at games like "Space Quest" or any of the other text-based adventure games. I found these a hell of a lot more immersive (there's that word again) and they're pretty similar (okay not that similar, but bare with me); they're story driven and they're mostly animations, coding and statistics selected by basic text boxes. The only difference is that you don't need to worry about the stats since they're not RPGs. I loved these games because the stories were compelling, the characters were likeable and interesting and what little combat they had (giant robot fight at the end of Space Quest 6, anyone?) had some contribution to the plot and had a reason as to why it happened which lead to giving the characters more depth instead of random encounters that served no real purpose.

Now flame me for that flawed comparison, I know it sucks but it's the best I could do since I've not really tried any other JRPG. I could've compared it to Oblivion or Fallout but that's still flawed as a comparison and someone will point it out, so it's kind of Catch 22 either way. I'll do my best to answer any objections you may have with my comments here but please keep it civil. Thanks.

EDIT I just remembered something to compare it to that I actually enjoyed and was very similar to Final Fantasy. I loved the Ultima series and they were basically random encounters, text boxes and story-driven gameplay, but the main difference was that I felt like I was actually playing a role since a lot of effort was made to make the world I was exploring as believable as possible and the entire game was nothing more than 8-Bits of fantasy pixels. Also, I now realized that I need to dig out my old Master System.

INB4:

"You're just a biased Xbox fanboy!"

Your point being? When someone asks you a question that asks your personal opinion then obviously you're going to be biased. I tried to get into FFVII, FFIX and FFX but they just aren't what I'm looking for.

Even though I own an Xbox, I'm no fanboy, I just prefer some games over others and Microsoft has what I like. I own (and still play) a SEGA Mega Drive 2 if you'd like to have a go at me about that, or how about my love of Tetris, Bejewled and Bust A Move 2?

Beyond Good and Evil.
I know it's not even been mentioned that much recently, but any praise it gets annoy me. It's only because I got really stuck, decided it wasn't my lack of skill but the fact it was a broken game, then swore an oath against it.

Same with Psychonauts, but I only rented it so I let it slide. Although I'm pretty sure it was a glitch.
Gettin' off topic here, sorry.
You have no soul.

The only game that I get tired of hearing praise of is MW2, because it deserves no praise, yet gets some. Any other game that deserves its praise may get as much as it can for all I care.

I let people praise whatever games they want. Just because I don't like a game doesn't mean I have the right to ***** and moan about people saying nice things about it.

bliz anything. especially wow, sc and diablo.

mw2, shit most CODs. halo anything.

fallout anything now. especially when people haven't played 1 and 2. that really erks me.

on the subject of ff7: agreed. people need to tone down the fanboyism. i'd still say the game is rather good.

in most cases, don't knock it if you haven't played it. but as the thread is simply 'tired of hearing praise for,' i understand people knocking things they don't know about.

but to be honest, us haters gotta hate.

Kotor gets better after the first planet and keeps getting better 'till the end. Which was awesome.

on topic: GTA, it's way overrated. 98/100? It just isn't that good.
Thank you for pointing that out. GTAIV was bundle of soggy krill that didn't know what it wanted to do as a game and made you take out your FAT COUSIN EVERYWHERE.

Although I really like Half Life I also think it's sorta overrated. I'd place it in my top 20 favorite FPS games but not in my top 10.

I certainly don't think it's one the best games ever made. How I disliked those tedious jumping from platform to platform puzzles. And the final level was such an anti-climax.

TF2. There's nothing to talk about in it. OK (perhaps even good; didn't play much) game, that's all.

Looking through these, I'm beginning to come to the assumption that it's mostly FPS's that are hated.

Wonder why?
Because it's the most popular genre. The more people who play them the more people there are to complain about them.

No-one is complaining about some submarine simulator or some other obscure niche genre because it's less likely anyone actually plays those things.

That game! The one that people LIKE! How DARE they enjoy that game and want to talk about it! Why can't they talk about something I like and care about? Why don't they cater to MY needs! So yeah, I am totally sick of that one game that people talk about, totally sick of it.

More on topic and all sarcasm aside, I rarely get tired of people who enjoy a game, I get tired of threads where people post "Why doesn't anyone love this game that I love?" Granted I've done it myself, it happens, but it IS something I'm tired of it.

Games that aren't even out yet. I could understand it if you'd played a game, loved it, and then told everyone how awesome it is, but if the game isn't even OUT yet, you are NOT allowed to call it good.

I'm looking at you CoD fanboys...
