Deus Ex... That is all...
You can't call Deus Ex a FPS. It was SO much more. There are very few games today that can compare.

I'll still call it the greatest FPS of all time, though. :D

Mass Effect 2:
While considered an RPG, the game is undeniably played as a FPS with a leveling system and side powers akin to games like Bioshock. I would love to see more FPS's use this games example and run with it.

For those that refuse to consider Mass Effect 2 a shooter....

Half Life 2:
Such a polished experience whose sections tend to run just a little too long before moving on to the next.

I know I am about to be quoted a million times saying how "I am never the only one" but, I am the only one who isn't fond of Deus ex? When I think back to playing it all I can remember is bad graphics (coming from a person who doesn't care about graphics) and boredom.

On topic. Haze ...erm... I would say TF2 but god damn those spies piss me off.

You know what, I am going to say resistance 2, the online modes are great competitive can have 30 people a side killing each other and co-op is fun (especially when you have a good team - sticks together and plays there role, instead of spreading out and looking for kills).

Granted, the solo player isn't anything great but I think it does well.

Online I would say Unreal Tournament 2004. The depth of that game is truly amazing.
Quake 3 is a very close second in regards to multiplayer.

Singleplayer and story wise would have to be Half Life 2.

Half Life and Unreal Tournament were both great.
Unreal was the one and only true master of fear and engine of all time. even now most new FPS uses unreal engines. UT came after and half-life not too long after that.

yes medicombo, he's right, the first halo is excellent, it had a great single player and an actual storyline

no but really the first halo is still the best. reach is quite boring and hard for no reason (yes I finished it but still not at legendary)
I'm not going to be a dick here but did you really have to do that?

Descent 2. Sorry guys but you're missing out. Doom was good. Descent was just incredible.

DOOM.

Any other answer pales in comparison to the greatness of DOOM when it came out.
And to add with that;
- HeXen
- Heretic
- Blood
And many others.

My two top choices;
- Duke Nukém 3D
- DESCENT
Agree great games

Modern Warfare 2. The hight of shooting prowess. I mean it's just so innovative and has such a deep story. Oh and the online community is great to, really geared towards teamwork and co-operation.
Modern Warfare 2 wasn't all that innovative to be honest. It was a decent game but it wasn't anything new. The storyline was alright but it wasn't all that 'new'.

Still a good game and probably is the best of its time in the case of sales and playerbase, although that being said I could easily mark any of the Half-Life based games.
fool you just got trolled

Soldier of Fortune 2, perhaps the greatest FPS of it's time. It was an absolute gorefest with a simple storyline that kept you massacring waves and waves of enemies and feeling damn good about it too.

Sometimes being the good guy is decent. That being said, I do miss games like SF2 when they actually tried to be abusively disturbing without being comical, but at the same time, not horror.
A good game but Soldier of fortune 1 was MUCH better imo.
