Legend of Legaia for me!
Shit, dude, people remember this game!?

I love the Internet

(and you, too, hybrid =p )
Of course! It had an awesome story, and a great battle system that let you discover techniques rather then have to level up to always get them!

(Awww, I like you too ^^)

Topic should explain it. The other day me and some friends were playing Dragon Age: Origins when one of them said it sucked. Thus led to me watching an argument of what RPG-based game was best. The two I heard most were Final Fantasy VII and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I didn't know what to think. What's your opinion?
Halo is my favorite RPG. Obviously.
Ahhhh, delicious sarcasm.

Mm... between...

Planescape Torment.
Fallout 1&2 (not 3).
Icewind Dale 2.
Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption.
Grandia 2.
Xenogears.
Knights of the Old Republic: The Sith Lords.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Mass Effect.
Resonance of Fate.
and..
Dragon Age: Origins...

It's probably going to have to be Bloodlines... or The Sith Lords.. hm.. or.. er.. darn.

Space Rangers 2.

I tried roleplaying in Dragon Age; it's not very good unless you choose the one role that's actually encouraged. I played as a meathead who just agreed and did as he was told, and finished the game stuck in a dream world because of forced dialogue choices if there is not a choice do not pretend to present one well okay, actually I broke character, progressed to another part where I either had to make another out-of-character choice or run back to the start of the area just to prepare for a boss fight (gaming the system rather than roleplaying). Both options were stupid, so I gave up on it. I was not impressed with that game. Also, Morrigan and her 'tis and 'twas and 'twill put me right off.

I'm gonna say you really can't pick one, because RPGs can be so different. IMO, there are a great number of titles that could be called the best, but they are so varied that it's impossible to pick just one.

World of Warcraft by a freaking mile, for obvious reasons.

If we aren't allowing MMOs, then Mass Effect 1 gets my vote. That game would have been literally perfect if not for the terrible framerate in my opinion.

Clearly the correct answer is FFX, but then again, I've never played your two nominees [sub]FFX is still the best :D[/sub]

Diablo II. End of thread.
I never got the Diablo thing. Never have i played a game that required so much bloody clicking.
It was just really immersive. That and I had a mac at the time. :(
Immersive? I wouldn't say I felt like I was in the game, it was more the loot finding that made it so epic, you could feel awesome and still find a challenge to overcome, I guess it was constantly gratifying to play and was just so damn cool.

The best RPG is obviously Morrowind.
Seconded - Oblivion was like it's prettier sister but then you swiftly find that other than the nice body she as thick as two short planks.

Morrowind had an immersion factor that was really quite brilliant add on to that a main quest that was truely epic and you have yourself a great RPG.

Knights of the Old Republic. Morrowind is also pretty good though.

As awesome as it is, Ocarina of Time is NOT an RPG. Anybody who thinks it is has obvious never played an RPG in their life.

Top 5 at least:

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Pokemon Red/Blue (and possibly also Gold/Silver)
Final Fantasy IX
Diablo II + Lord of Destruction expansion
Fallout 3 (No, I never played Fallout 1 or 2)
Okay, I'll get Morrowind! Now everybody shut the hell up...

Planescape Torment. For me anyway, just loved to story so much. Love anything by Black Isle really.

The Diablo series and the Bethesda RPGs are bloody addictive, and I probably got more play time off them compared to other RPGs, but I wouldn't count them amongst my favorite.

As for JRPGs, Suikoden 2 will always be my favorite, (still waiting for an English version of Suikogaiden...). Final Fantasy 6 and Shin Megami Tensei Lucifer's Call (or Nocturne depending on where you're from), were also pretty damn good RPGs.

And the illogical part of my brain dominated by nostalgia is screaming at me Legend of Heroes, the Gagharv Trilogy.... but... well...

EDIT: Ah also forgot to mention the stuff by Troika Games. Vampire and Arcanum were both brilliant, but Temple of Elemental Evil, was too buggy and I think I never finished it.

As for another JRPG, the Shadow Hearts series is one of my favorites. 1 and 2 were brilliant, 3 went downhill a bit... still slightly hoping for a sequel..

Neverwinter Nights
Baulders Gate was pretty good, but not the best.
Fallout Series (but my god the bugs..)
Haven't played Dragon Age, Origins yet, but just because a game is 'big' doesn't mean it's 'the best', but that is definately an advantage to RPG's.

RPG is too broad a subject area.

Best 'JRPG' = Earthbound (Mother 2)
Best Action RPG = Vagrant Story
Best Adventure RPG = Legend of Mana
Best Western RPG = Mass Effect 2
Best RPG Story = Planescape: Torment
Best Online RPG = Ultima Online (Fuck you WoW)

JRPG is in quotes because it's still very not RPG. It's D&D rules tossed in a fantasy game.
