Damn, I was hoping for a "blast from the past" game, where you are nigh-invincible and superfast. Why is this a Call of Duty clone? Why, Gearbox, why? This is not a game that is supposed to be "realistic". This was supposed to be nothing but immature fun!

I'm crushed. I really wanted this game to be good.

Edit:

I hope all these haters did their research and found out that the demo is the over 8 months old PAX demo. Gearbox has already said the full game has tons of improvements that the demo doesnt have.

Also who the fudge actually bases a game off the demo. Demos are always trash with 50% of the features missing. After playing PC games for over 15 years I cant remember one demo that didn't make me almost not buy the game.
If you're telling the truth, then I feel a little better. Thanks for restoring my hope.

Eh, I'll download the demo at some point and try it out, though all this news is a tad disappointing. No offence but I really hope you guys are all just exaggerating, or maybe you played the wrong demo....or something.

You can always bet on Duke, dammit!

Really? Wow, this really makes me sad. I was hoping for a return of shooters past. Where you had a large health bar, could take craploads of hits, could carry craploads of weapons, and sprint at 60 miles an hour.

From what I hear, it has more in common with current shooters.

God dammit.

Well, at least there's Serious Sam. Hopefully that'll be the return we've been waiting for.
Yeah, once I heard that Serious Sam was making a comeback, I was wondering which would do it best. Looks like Duke's got completely the wrong idea XD Thank god for Sam (fingers crossed ;)

Its a new age my friend. A lot of demos now come out after the game has been out for a while in fact. Like "Hey I know you skipped out on this but here, try a bit and see". Happens all the time now.

So demos have come to more accurately reflect the actual game then they used to and poeple do use them as a make or break sales pitch.

Personally I hate spoilers so I wont demo a game I am already going to buy. But if I am interested buy not over the line I will play the demo and see if it changes my mind.

Well, if the issue is with some of the basic mechanics - health regen, low health cover-based gameplay etc, that's not exactly likely to change, now is it? Also, weak defence to say that "Oh, you don't like the only interactive promotional experience available? Oh it's ok - it's 8 months old, all those problems are fixed, yeah, it's perfect now." It is what it is, and that is what they have chosen for people who don't have the game yet to experience as a first taste of what to expect. If it's not accurate and people hate on it then they've only got themselves to blame.

though I have no plans to by the game I will let the final version be reviewed by some of the reviewers I trust before I let the guillotine fall on this game.

I have a pre-order for the balls of steel edition, but it's more of a collector's item for me than a game. Is it so bad that I should cancel that as well?

Really, just watching the new trailers made it look really, really dull. I miss the one from 2001. That one looks a lot more fun, honestly. If I get it for free, like as a gift, I'll be happy, but I won't be buying it. I'll go and play Serious Sam again. It's more like Duke than Duke. Oddly enough.

Hell no. That bust man.

The problem seems to be less that people find it outright bad - more that it arguably tilts to the side of being completely inoffensive.

Well, at least we can look forward to a nice Zero Punctuation episode.
he already did duke nukem forever dont you remember?
That was an abomination. I can be funnier when I just get to make up shit out of thin air.

To take a real game down in a funny way, that's something I'm looking forward to. Like, say, Wolfenstein ZP.
i was just making a bad joke is that not allowed?

It's outstandingly...mediocre. The graphics are nice and it played okay.
But man, the two-weapon system, regenerating health, no mighty boot....I was done. Though people will still buy it an make Gearbox money for Borderlands 2. ^^

On the two-weapon system, I recently played Half-Life 2 for the first time weeks ago and I was amazed that I got to carry a pistol, a shotgun, AND an smg. FPSs suck nowdays.
Pumped for Alice though.

That sucks. Why does every FPS limit their character to 2 weapons? It just won't feel like Duke if I can't carry 10 different ways to slaughter aliens.

I'll wait for the demo to become public before I set an opinion. Personally I think you guys have too high expectations since it's been in development for about 12 years. Maybe Gearbox is making fun of the new shooters and is using the demo to set false expectations. We'll see.

Not surprised really. I am normally first aboard the hype train but the adverts didn't do it for me. I am seriously disappointed about the weapon system, next you'll tell me you have regenerating health
Yeah. I spent the entire demo hiding behind a wall.
If it's his Ego at work, wouldn't it make more sense for his health to regenerate by... I don't know, SHOOTING things?

While you're correct in saying that we shouldn't base our entire purchasing decision on a demo, you must remember that the purpose of a demo is to give consumers a small taste of the game to come, in order to get people to buy the game. Having a lackluster demo makes it easy for people to assume that the game itself will be bad, even if reviews say the full game is great, because there is no substitution for hands-on experience.

That being said, I think the real problem here is that Gearbox didn't update its own demo to more fully represent the game, if in fact the previously listed issues have been addressed.

I dunno... I don't have a demo, and my initial reaction to this thread was "OHmygod, must cancel pre-order!!"
But then i calmed down and tried to have a look at where you guys were coming from. So i checked out some gameplay vids of the demo (there's already a few on the tube).

My Opinion:
"Blow it out your ass!"
My pre-order still stands. It isn't anything ground-breaking, but it is exactly what i expected.

a few observations/complaints and my reactions:
Its too difficult - (there's a piece of cake option)
Choppy mouse movement - (yep, this will probably piss me off),
Depth of field/awkward camera - (i played mirrors edge, i think i can handle this)
old school aesthetic is a cover up for dated graphics - (not much of an issue for me),
only carries 2 weapons at a time - (don't care),
vehicle handles like garbage -(I'm here to kick ass, not drive)
I'm going to cancel my pre-order and get alice - (you do that, I'm gonna keep Duke and get Alice :))

I'll be sure to let you guys know if i play this and i do eat my own words, but for now, I am content.

I thought about that... where the game mechanics are different for the video game Duke is playing versus the actual game, but that strikes me as seriously self defeating. It would literally advertising the game as one thing, a Cod clone when it is in fact an old school homage. As much as I wish this was actually the case, from an advertising stance it makes no sense whatsoever. I'm still not sure where I sit on this one... I'm kinda broke, so I can't afford to go out there and nab the game when it comes out based on nostalgia from 1997... and I've got a lot of cod clone shooters I actually really enjoy sitting on my Steam account...

Sorry, I probably should have broken that up into paragraphs first... >.<
