how did he thank you for banning him?

also, I looked at the "user was banned for x"
and it was a post about how he wanted to quit the escapist with the words at the bottom
"user was banned at user's request"

or am I thinking of a different person? he was the one who ranted about hating iphones right?

also, about how easy it is to be banned, just post anything that somebody who frequents /b/ would recognise easily
Some folks add text to their own posts saying "User was banned for x". Our notifications - the real ones - simply refer to the post that earned the person their ban. That's it.

It's actually quite hard
Can't you just request a ban?

Like a post saying "HEY MODS,
Yeah don't wanna say it just in case
Yep. RAKTheUndead requested a ban so he could go off and actually have sex with someone for once.

That wasn't a joke by the way, that's the reason he gave me.

Well, I say good luck to him!
Fair play to him I suppose - couldn't he have just, you know, walked away and done that anyway? :p

His problem was that he kept pushing boundaries and one several occasions overstepped the foggy grey zone between what is and isn't acceptable forum behavior, almost as if he thought he could get by on his popularity. I guess he didn't count on the Mods snapping back.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what happened too. The most important thing you have to remember, if you're a veteran of the community and you've been here for a long time: your status on the forums will not affect how the mods deal with your posts. It doesn't matter if you joined yesterday or if you've been here three years. If you do something to push your post outside the boundary of 'acceptable behavior,' you'll face the consequences.

I don't know this for a certainty, but I'm almost certain that one of the things the mods hate the most is the idea of veterans of the forum who think that since they've been there so long, and their status is so high, they can get away with whatever they want. They just hate that. So if you're a forum veteran, you still need to be careful what you post.

If banning is like threads being locked, I'd say it is perfectly arbitrary.
I got a thread locked once and when I asked why, the mod that had blocked it could not answer.
He/She just said "Cry me a fountain baby".
Just goes to say how constructive they can be and how much they care.
Not all of them of course, but some specific ones.
Criticising the mods is a good way...
Excellent then, let's see it. I have been trying to find the "Delete Account" option for over a year but couldn't find it.

So basically, you're saying that this site does not support freedom of speech or just that moderators here answer to critics with the ban button (which seems awfully easy for them to do because I don't have access to that button myself.)
They do not have to support the freedom of speech, the same way your school (assuming you're still in school, but there's good chance you're not) doesn't really support it either. Except I'm not sure what schools have got to do with it, but moderators are working directly from the owners of the website - who have the right to moderate the information on it all they want.
That's the whole debate isn't it?
Keep in mind though. Moderation is another word for censorship.
And yes, I am aware, censorship does not support freedom of speech.
So what if it's censorship? The mods haven't banned anyone for expressing a well thought out opinion that's reasonably argued, at least not to my knowledge. If they censor the trools, that's fine by me.

Sometimes it's a series of things that the user did. Those bannings you see are probably the straw that broke the camels back.

Just out of interest. I've seen a number of people have been banned on these forums, but when I follow the link to the page which was the reason for the ban there doesn't seem to be anything incriminating. What are the standards like here?
Just stay away from posting content of an explicitly sexual or pointlessly gross nature, advertisements, hate-speech (you can criticize stuff, and criticize it harshly, but don't go on some swearword rampage without any arguments), and getting personal by insulting other members of the community. These seem to be the cardinal sins that lead to permabans.

Mods can sanction on their discretion, but I suppose they would contact an offender with a warning beforehand if it wasn't a major offence. As long as there is content and civility to your post, you should be safe.

Pretty much if you get a mod who respects the site and you say something very misogynistic(which is a headshot for your account if it's off-topic as well), hombophobic, or just plain ignorant and hateful.

I'd suggest not worrying about it as you just have to look at the TOS and you'll know what can get you kicked, but interestingly enough, nothing to get on the mods' good side... Hmm...

Their ban letters are very rude though and will make you feel like a complete douche for the rest of the day on just such the occasion that you successfully garner the Mods' wrath so don't go looking for the man in the cave to give you the paper that gives you the ban-potion.

zelda referenecs FTW.
