Ok, I'll stop replying to Eggo's posts since he's stuck on a single game I haven't played and is just trying to work the semantics. He's free to quote this and have the last say. I don't want the thread to be turned into a flaming quotefest for the sake of his ego...

To the rest of you, thanks for the constructive replies. I know Halo isn't "teh bestest game evar" and it has its flaws (repetitive interiors spring to mind), but I just couldn't find justification for some of the general hatered and resentment that I've seen expressed towards the game.

From what I understand, the hatered is mostly leveled at 1.) A non-gamer demographic that loved the game, and 2.) The sequels which were of inferior quality, and some of it is just general elitism (console or otherwise).

Also, I garnered some understanding even from the more antagonistic posts in this thread, so thanks to them as well.

The only console I've ever owned was a NES, a looong time ago. I'm a PC gamer through and through and regularly preach the superiority of PCs over consoles. I've been playing games for a long time, and with FPS games I've been onboard since Wolfenstein 3D.

Recently, my curiosity was sparked by all the Halo bashing that's been going on around here. I've been taught to think of Halo as an inferior copy of what PCs had a long time ago. Very few of my friends have consoles and they generally express their distaste for console FPS games when instigated. So I decided it was time to see how bad it was. I went out and rented Halo: Combat Evolved for PC. After coming home I installed it and started it up. Several hours later, I realized how much time had passed and also...

...I was having fun. A lot of fun. I like Halo

The game flows nicely, looks good for its age, the weapons are satisfying, the story is decent enough, the protagonist is archetypical but does his part. The two weapon system is fairly nice and I don't remeber seeing it in older PC games. Likewise with the shield system. Vehicles are fun enough. The enemies actually exhibit some degree of intelligence. For a game from 2001, it's pretty damn good.

So, why exactly are people bent on slamming this game? Am I missing some fatal flaw in
its design? Do the sequels take a turn for the worse? Or is it just a force of habit?
That pretty much sums up my hatred for Halo. Oh wait also, it made regenerating health popular.

Halos 1 and 2 had good 1 player gameplay, great coop gameplay, and halo 3 and decent enough competitive online play

If you really think Halo measures up to Max Payne, Operation Flashpoint, and all the other great games that came out in 2001, then you're completely welcome to that opinion. But that also means I'm completely welcome to disparage your lack of understanding.

The original Halo I enjoyed immensely. However, if you had said Halo 3....

Woah, there's no reason to get defensive, babe. Last time I told someone to cry more, I got banned for quite a bit.

It would be a shame to see that happen to such a nice boy like yourself. Or should I say bro :3
You're not absolved of being rude or condescending because of post count. You're just bull-rushing your opinion and dismissing the other viewpoints as invalid because they don't match your own.

Max Payne Metacritic score - 89
Operation Flashpoint Metacritic score - 85

Halo Combat Evolved (Xbox) Metacritic score -97

Like I said, I think it's a good game and clearly so do a lot of critics.

The reason it was popular was because of its availability. Consoles are much cheaper than gaming PCs so it had a wider audience. Personally I think it was a good thing it was so big. It created more investment within the games industry which benefits us all in the long run.

I have played halo 1 and halo 3 and I enjoyed them both a lot, when I have friends over the first thing we do is pop in the halo disk for some fragging.

I value my chances at a Neo badge too much to answer that in a completely adequate manner.

However, I can still point out that your opinion of the relative merits of games does not necessarily reflect some objective standard, or even the opinions of others. You are in no position to tell me what I should view as being mediocre... when, to me, so much of what you hold up as superior doesn't appeal in the least and blurs together into an indistinguishable smear of generica.

So go enjoy your games, by all means. Just stop thinking that your preferences make any difference to anybody else but yourself.

What has that got to do with anything? "Bro" means frat boy? All you ever do in halo related threads is trying desperately to make people who play halo look dumb.

Because the PC version came out in 2003, and Deus Ex came out in 2000, and UT came out in 1999.

There were already much better and innovative games than Halo around.

Anyway, if you seriously think no good shooters came out in 2001 for PC, have you ever heard of Max Payne?

World War II Online came out in 2001 too, which I didn't know, but that was way more revolutionary than Halo ever will be.

edit: I'm really late.

Excuse yourself, go behind the shack, shoot your kneecaps and apologize again.

Maybe Halo is good on consoles. Don't know.

But that just might mean they have crappy FPS games. Halo on PC was outdated the day it was released, and Halo 2 required Vista for the same graphics and no improvements. And probably got cracked to work with XP very soon.

I mean, it would've been cracked if people cared.

Well, we don't have to make them look this way.

Try desperately?

Hell, try?

Anyway, you asked and I answered.
Okay, so you agree with me then. In halo threads what you always does (/try to do) is making people who play it look dumb.

But I still didnt answer. What do you mean by "bro game", and what does that article have to do with those words?.

People don't hate Halo, They hate the people who play Halo and create a bad name for that particular group. Thus not wishing to involve themselves and fall under a stereotype like the whiny little sheep-chickens they are, they create an entirely new group that distains anyone that plays it or praises it.

Because I myself aren't a fan of shooting games I sit firmly in the 'indifferent, don't give a flying candle' group. Best place to be, looking at it from the outside though, Halo seems like a decentish enough game, wouldn't play it myself, but I certainly don't think it would be bad if I was a fan of the genre...
