I'm bored of practically every game too, I haven't completed a game fully in ages, they're just boring for the majority. The only games I play now are MMO's, at the moment it's WoW as I've taken a little break from Aion. I'd recommend doing the same, I haven't had the urge to play any game (apart from occasionally UT, TF2, GTA or BF:BC2 (if not for lulz, to speak to friends)) in months, whereas I always have some sort of urge to play WoW, and it's not that I just play it to pass the time, it's a pretty good game that I enjoy playing, which is more than I can say for all of them other games sat on my shelf.

I went through the same thing last year, so I completely got out of the gaming scene for a bit. I broke out some board games and bought a few more, then without looking at reviews or websites I went into a store and browsed the video games and picked one up that looked interesting. That broke me out of the video game duldrums I was in and now I still switch between board and video games.

Chances are it's just oversaturation of the genre. I mean, you play them, then read about them, watch videos about them and before long you've had enough of it. Just take a bit of time off from them and I'll bet within two months you'll be back to loving them just as much as before.

Burn out is burn out.

That's how I usually feel after a few months of WoW. First it's fun, then it's amusing, then after about 2 months or so it becomes boring so I quit for a few months and repeat the cycle.

SonicWaffle, I understand how you feel. I feel the same way, here and there towards movies, as well as games; mostly contemporary, though. Never classics. But I must defend "Red Dead Redemption" and beg the question: why on Earth would your first playthrough consist of completing the side-quests as well as the single-player campaign? There's a reason as to why the letters that appear on your mini map are for "story based missions only".

Why on Earth does anyone need trophies? And why does everyone need to do everything possible and as quickly as possible instead of taking their time? But alas, that is for another thread.

D.
Did you notice the part where I said that I had really enjoyed Red Dead?

As for completing side quests and such, it is because I rarely play games twice. I simply don't see the point, when I can do everything in a single playthrough. Also, because they were fun, often more fun than the story missions were, and generally hunting a specific creature is more of a challenge than the standard 'go here, shoot dudes' missions.

I'm really not sure why you've inferred that I rushed through the game, and in fact I'm quite baffled. You say;

why on Earth would your first playthrough consist of completing the side-quests as well as the single-player campaign? There's a reason as to why the letters that appear on your mini map are for "story based missions only".
but then you also say

And why does everyone need to do everything possible and as quickly as possible instead of taking their time?
It doesn't stack up. On the one hand, you're saying I should have rushed through the main quest and ignored all the other things to do, and on the other you're complaining that people don't take their time with games. Which is it?

It happens sometimes... I was bored of my PC and 360 games... and then I bought a PS3. My passion was reignited! Just give it some time... start doing something else. It happens to everyone.

It's the circle of life, there were a few months when I didn't even TOUCH a real game and then I got back into it and I'm in a weird phase now where I think about playing, but I just don't get around to it

Go back a decade or two and play those games. Honestly after the myriad of MW2 clones & interactive QTE movies they're really refreshing and the pre-90's games are often fiendishly hard to beat.

Same thing happened to me a while back. I just didn't feel like playing anymore. So, for a solid month, I spent my time catching up on movies I'd never bothered to watch, and anime series' I'd never bothered to finish. After that month I had a new favorite movie, a new favorite anime, and I was ready for some gaming.

Because games have gotten worse and worse. There is no fun in video games anymore, I can't enjoy 95% of new games, but find myself loving all the olds like MGS, almost all of my N64 and PS1 games, when game developers start caring again, that's when you'll pick up and play.

Take a break from gaming. Just for a few days, or maybe a week. Maybe, when you get back to playing games, the feeling will go away. If that doesn't work, buy a new game from a genre you've never played.

I really am. I never thought I'd see the day, but here it is. I cannot be bothered to play video games anymore.

It began a few months ago, when my habits began to change. Usually I'd come home, stick whatever I was currently playing through in the Xbox, and spend a few hours with it. More and more, though, I found myself coming home, looking at my games collection, and thinking "meh". On weekends I used to wake up early and get a solid few hours of playing time, whereas now I'm more likely to watch crap TV instead. The last game I played all the way through was Mass Effect 2, which managed to keep my attention throughout. Since then, my rental company has sent me a ton of other games, most of which I've played for a few hours and sent back, regardless of how fun they were.

The real kicker was Red Dead Redemption, a game I'd been anticipating for a long time. Hell, I even pre-ordered it, which I've never done for a game before. I love the game - it's fun, incredibly atmospheric, and the story is good enough to keep my attention. At first I was doing everything; treasure hunting, random events, poker games, the ambient quest thingies like hunting or flower picking. Unfortunately, around the point I opened up the third area of the map, I just stopped playing. Occasionally I'll pop the disc in and attempt a mission, or kill some wolves, but I'll soon be bored again.

The thing is, I still want to play games. I'm still getting games from my rental service (Brutal Legend and Aliens vs Predator currently, both of which I've played briefly and turned off) and I still get the urge to play my games, but whenever I try my attention wanes. I still haunt these forums to talk about games, and read the gaming news for things I'm looking forward to, but that's as far as it goes.

I don't know what to do about this. I've become a gamer who doesn't game. Does anyone have any suggestions?
oh my god! have you seen a doctor?

Well, you have two options.
Carry on playing games and be bored, or stop playing and give me all your games! ;)

Nah. It's best to take a break for a while, then go back to them, then binito. Gaming will never get tiresome for me.

The thing is, I do still feel something for them. The longing to play is still there, and I'm still interested in upcoming games, I just can't force myself to play them. It isn't that I've burned out, more that I just can't keep myself interested while playing.
If you do want to play, why do you need to force yourself to play them? If this turn of phrase doesn't show you're conflicted about this (even to the point of coming post in the forums), I don't know what will :)

Maybe you want to want to play, but don't really want to play. Maybe it's force of habit, maybe it's because you feel being a gamer is a big part of your identity. I don't know. But I'd say to not worry about it.

As almost everyone in this thread has already said, give it a rest. I've been playing computer and video games for more than 25 years and I can't count how many times I've stopped playing for some time, then came back. This year I came back to PC gaming after some time without really caring either about PC or console gaming. In the few months since buying and playing Mass Effect 1 through Steam I've bought more than 50 other games (all on sales or low prices though) and, if I could, I wouldn't do anything else but play them. I have even cut time from my other hobbies, but I know eventually the pendulum will swing back again and I'll play less. It's just natural.

EXPANDE! try some other types of games, see if your local hobby shop hosts any DND and see if you can play a few games; play some old RPG's and RTS's; Indie Games are awesome, lower graphics but, most of the time, they have better game play, and they are very unique [you will not find any indie halo remakes:)]. It's just burn out, wait and it will pass.

games are short lived. there are few i play for longer than a few months. then i buy more. it seems trivial when you think of it like that but it's just what i do
