And to clarify why most people are talking about mothers. It's because studies have showed, that the mothers have the biggest impact on children pre 12, which is the phase where most Social standards/views are taught. Past the age of 12, the father have a bigger impact on children because this is where the moral views and standards need to be endorced, (kids hitting puberty usually outgrowing their mother (especially the boys) and becoming more physically dominant so the mother has a harder time endorcing rules with her presence while the fathers who are usually larger are more intimidating. (This varies of course.)

I think that mothers are to lazy and don't like being told what to do with their kids.

Hitting kids is a great way to teach them to solve problems with violence. Unlike video games, parents actually do act as imitatable role models on a regular basis. However, failure to discipline children, and using video games as a scapegoat when you fail to check the rating, or be even the tiniest bit aware of your child's entertainment habits...that's a problem. I suppose we all know this, but I think the lesson is that parents need to take a more active role in children's lives, and teach them how to behave.

Also, I think we may have to acknowledge that violent video games could very well lead to violent behavior in very young children. The science behind this hypothesis is woefully biased and ameturish, yes, but it is certainly reasonable. Of course, a child left alone with a plastic bag could suffocate themselves, but we won't be banning plastic bags any time soon. It's still the parents responsibility, obviously, but I think it's important to acknowledge that however much we enjoy our hobby, it is inappropriate in some hands.

I don't want children of my own as of now, and kids in general usually piss me off... But so do grownups and teens, so yah... You have my respect tho, until you've proven you don't deserve it ;)

About the "take him down" thing, are we suggesting parents shoot their kids in the leg if they run off or something? Maybe putting one in their shoulder to make them drop the x-box controller?^^

Was what I did wrong?
Yes, completely.

Regardless of how you consider physical punishment, hitting someone else's child is utterly abominable.

Of course, the mother was in the wrong too, even more so than you, but that doesn't justify your actions.

And as for stopping the child attacking you, there are far more civilized ways of doing that than a slap across the face. Such as standing up and getting a steward and other such possibilities, and if, somehow, none of those worked, slapping the child on the leg, after informing their mother of your intentions, may have been appropriate.

So im guessing youve never had children then?

And you know, hitting children is nice and illegal now, so yeah... good luck ith that, hope you dont knock anyone up/get knocked up.
People who think a little slap on the butt is evil sinful abuse never had kids themselves. Or they were lucky to get kids who could be disciplined easily, I'd like to see you say that when handing Bebe's Kids :p

Children can be annoying, but give them a break. You were such a kid once too. There's something very wrong in parenting if it comes to any kind of violence.
Ever worked at a daycare camp? Every kid acts like a saint, except now some of them have a phobia with glue and I can't sprint away from all of them forever. I remember having so much energy when I was really little, but now I feel jaded, and I'm going to say that again in each interval of ten years.
No, I haven't. Must be rough at times, I'd assume.
One reason for my positive outlook on kids might be because of the fact I don't really know any that can't behave at all. Some of my young cousins and my "godson" that I see few times a year are wonderful. Not at all the image of scavenging sewer rats, that some people here seem to have.

Still, you're better off shouting "i detest small children" in public, then saying "I LOVE SMALL CHILDREN"

Great...another child hater here on the escapist. Did hating humanity in general get old for all of you?
Whats wrong with a little "Aggressive Expansion" or just branching out to one thing and leaving everything else alone? lol

The only thing that annoys me than the rude/crude/idiotic kids are the arrogant parents who go
"oh my child is never/would never/ blah blah blah"
the parents that feel that their kid can do no wrong despite the 13 other kids who bums have been bashed with wedgies.
Parents like that are tools. Their child owns them and knows it. It's kind of sad really.

The thing to remember is that blaming a kids attitude for a parents means you can blame the parents attitude on their parents. My parents don't ever hit anyone anymore, but I'm traumatized, of whistling. Like stick your fingers in your mouth whistling, because outside forces factor in too. What about the school system telling us all we're special? What about the teachers that can't discipline. Don't they get in trouble for making a child feel uncomfortable now? It's never cut and dry, damn.

Saying "I like Children" is like saying "I like people... for a while".

My sis and her 2yr old niece are living in the same house and the kid is a spoilt brat, being the first grandchild and all. I barely pay any attention to the kid, and if she goes into a place she isn't supposed to, like my room. I just treat her like the dogs, raise my voice slightly, point to the doorway and say "OUT!".
Now she just stands at the doorway and doesn't come in.

Unfortunately for many, different things work for different kids, and I think that in those cases where a little shock wake up call works, it should be allowed. It also depends on the age of the kid, toddlers and stuff you shouldn't need to hit. But bratty teenagers can tolerate the cane and I wouldn't object if those who deserved it got the cane, most teachers are too scared to discipline beyond shouting & detention anyway these days, just to avoid lawsuits.

In conclusion, I think Russell Peters puts in a hilarious argument.

Thats all well and good. but then there are the fearful parents whose very thoughts make the kid's clench in fear. and in turn take it out and re act around everything else. then the parent shows up poof, fearful and quiet.

but my main point was that the parents who would never even give the 1st thought that it might be them. many parents will defend and accuse other children. thats my main point of it.
the folks that dodge their responsibility by looking for scapegoats as to why children misbehave. "Oh wait? my boy misbehaved? you must have the wrong child...... Excuse me? my child bullied your child? well to bad because he's a liar!"

see? lol
All in all when shit like this hits the fan, i just hope i have a cup of coco and some popcorn for it all.

On a side note. IF i ever had my own bastard. I'd at least have fun with it. here's a great example....

Lets say your kid(s) are walking home and in front of an old woman. then you drive up close to them while still in view of said old women (if you have a van... then this works all the better!)
Roll down your window and go
"Hey kids, you like candy? I got some candy in the car. why not hope in and have some?"

As soon as they hop in, speed off like you just took the hope diamond!

As the police that may come and find your vehicles plate. well you and the kids will play dumb. what wrong did you do? tee hee.

You pretty much summed it up.

If parents beat their children for acting up then I guarantee kids would be alot more well behaved. My parents would whip my ass when I misbehaved, which was absolutely yhe reason I was a well mannered child most of the time.

I don't like the sounds they make. It's annoying and they smell bad. Furthermore they are a tripping hazard.
