Well, it isn't actually all that. It's a good game, but hardly the best game of the last 5 years, and not really even the best RPG of the last 5 years. Better RPGs that came out recently include Witcher 2 and Devil Survivor, and you can get a better RPG (Spirit Engine 2) for free. But the shooter gameplay is lots of fun, especially if you play Vanguard.

Why would i even need to convince you to play Mass Effect? The game is great and if you can't se that it's you're own problem...

dont worry... the millions of people who see why it is so good, are enjoying it...

well what don't you like about it?>
I didn't like the gameplay, story, or characters, felt it was padded, and it ended with a cliffhanger

However, if you've played it all the way through and didn't like it, I don't see how I could convince you. And why would you want me to?
I'm asking you to explain why you think it's in your top 5 best video games, because I honestly have no idea
If you are a traditional RPG fan, then you won't like it as its customization, stats and items are far from the the way they've been since the first RPG. At its core its still the same, you can get items from either killing enemies, finding them or unlocking a container and you increase your stats and abilities through leveling. But how it was handled was what put off those expecting the age-old formula of RPG elements.

Personally, when it comes to RPG's i am pretty progressive, and believe that any type of game (whether they be sport, racing or even RTS games) can be an RPG, if the mechanics are there. So seeing a different approach to the admittedly tired formula of RPG's was what sealed the deal in terms of its brilliance.

ME1 felt way more serious with what it offered. ME2 is overly simplified... details are lacking or are included where they are not even needed. Like the "overly unique" characters that are barely contributing to the plot. It only distracts and begs the question of "where the fuc did actual plot go?" If they spent at least half the time on actually working on the plot, they'd reach better overall balance, but for now they just missed the point. And everyone else is so deep up gaming that they are afraid or too busy playing it to grow a brain and balls to nitpick. Oh, the irony and hopelessness.

Agreed there. I played the CRAP out of the 1st Witcher...I think 5 playthroughs. But that's the thing...I have never considered Mass Effect to be an "RPG". It's its own animal...a genre unto itself.

On my game RAID array, the games I install are divided into folders based on genre. They are:

FPS
RPG
RTS
Other
Star Wars
Racing

I installed Mass Effect 1 and 2 into the "Other" folder.......with Peggle and Minecraft.

It's a game about talking. There are no good games about talking. Only Mass Effect.

Well OK I guess there is some combat as well, but mostly? Just flying through space, chatting up aliens.

And that is awesome.

My friend loves Halo and Black Ops. My other friend likes Planscape Torment and Fallout. I love Dragon Age: Origins, Witcher 2, and Mass Effect 2.

Yet, while we don't think the other is playing the best game, we all acknowledge why these games are loved as they are.

Sadly, the gaming world (like any other world) is dominated by nitwits that thinks in black and white terms. If the game doesn't suit your tastes, it is INSTANTLY a BAD game with HORRIBLE dialogue, HORRIBLE gameplay, and HORRIBLE graphics. It's sad that people like this still exist. But alas, it's human nature... what can we do about it? -_-

Because it really is the greatest "modern" game. A dumbed down corridor shooter, with bad dialogue, forced mature themes and shiny graphics. Everything needed to sell millions.

Why would I need to convince you? I liked it, I liked it a lot. If you didn't it's your own loss.

Good to meet you, too many people are traditionalists. If it doesn't have dice rolls and pages of stats they can't see something for what it is. And that includes a lot of the staff at the escapist. I can't help but be happy seeing your Frank Horrigan avatar while hearing of your open mindedness. A tip of the hat to you sir.

This game is great because shut up!

xD

On a serious note:
You're literally asking people to change your point of view and that is something really great, but in this particular case, there really isn't much to say about the game that hasn't already been said in the reviews.

If you played the game and didn't enjoy it, why beat yourself up?

Hooray I get to spew more hate on Mass Effect 2.

I hate Mass Effect 2.

The story was filled with plot holes. Half of the characters are morons ("Well our enemy has laid a trap for us. Lets ask Shepard go investigate, even though they killed her and destroyed her ship without any trouble last time, and despite the fact that we spent billions of credits trying go bring her back to life derp"). Both female and male Shepard's voice actors are terrible. The combat was the some of the most tedious, boring, lackluster, shit I have ever seen. Also Bioware had some weird idea that if something didn't work well in ME1 it should just be thrown out completely.

Mass Effect 2 was dog shit. Well made, well presented dog shit, but still dog shit.
Opinions mean nothing for actual quality. You may feel that way but Jeniffer hale is a damn good voice actor.
I love Jennifer Hale, but she was just so bland here. She is still miles above Mark Meer's attempt at voice acting.

Recently a certain game website listed Mass effect 2 as the best modern video game (last 5 years)
I personally don't give any credibility to the site, and only use it as a news site. Even so, it bothered me that mass effect 2 was considered to be the best. I didn't enjoy it at all, and I only forced myself to get through it because everyone else said it was amazing.

I feel like I'm missing something, Why is everyone in love with this game?
Just because other people like it doesn't mean you have to. If you don't like it, you don't like it..that doesn't mean you're missing anything. I never liked God of War for example. I know alot of people do, but I just really don't.

so maybe it wasnt completely realistic and 100% scientifically accurate
Especially when you consider the Asari. They're like an alien designed by Cave Johnson or something. "Species evolving on two different planets with no common history not being able to exchange genetic material may be science. But it's not Apeture Science!"

EDIT: Also, if you try to skip out on planet scanning, don't. It sucks balls having to go through and do that, but it't better to give in and do it for ten minutes every hour or so than go through fifteen hours of gameplay and finally get so frustrated with your innacurate machine gun that you have to give in and scan for a few hours at a time. Trust me here.

planet scanning is basically the only negative nitpick i have at the game...
See, I've never understood why everyone hates the planet scanning so much. It was a mini-game. It was WAY better than the stupid Frogger mini-game in ME1. I was SO sick of Frogger by the time I finished ME1.

And, really, 10 minutes every hour? It isn't even that much. Here's how you do it:

Every time you arrive in a new star system, you click on each planet (except the one where the plot is clearly labeled). Look at the scanner. Moderate? Go elsewhere. Rich? Sink ten to fifteen probes into the planet and move on when it gets down to Moderate (unless you find Ezo, in which case you get it all). By the time you recruit Tali and get the last ship upgrade, you will already have more than enough of every Mineral.

And on the second playthrough, where you get a big pile of starting Minerals? You barely have to do any scanning at all. You can get almost all of the ship upgrades out of the initial batch, and the weapon/armor upgrades you never even notice their cost if you use the above "rich planet only" method.

Anyway, considering how quick and easy it was, I don't understand why everyone hates the planet scanning so much. Thoughts?

And don't say the Mako. The Mako had nothing to do with planet scanning. In ME1, you scanned a planet (and got it's resources) by clicking on it once. And then you didn't do anything with the resources anyway (except get a tiny amount of money and xp).
i actually don't mind the mako overall, i thought it was kind of fun for combat and it reminded me of using the tank from star fox 64, so if they keep it in the combat in ME 3 but maybe figure out some better way to combine ME 1 and 2 for the mineral gathering port i'd be happy

Now i don't HATE the planet scanning but i also don't love it, i think it could've gone maybe a bit better or maybe had some purpose to it rather than:
