There's something so deeply depressing about half the posts in this thread I won't stop to say anything but Morrowind > Escapist Forums.

I haven't played it yet, but I loved Oblivion (though Fallout 3 is better in every way). However, when I say that, I always have to hear the Morrowind fanboys calling me an idiot for liking such a "shallow" game...

Should I buy Morrowind? The open world looks cool, but the combat looks a bit "eh...".

I tried playing it again after many years. Last time before that I could spend hours just messing around in it. But this time I couldn't play any farther than doing combat with the nearest two mudcrabs. I'd love to play it, but the combat is just so horrible that I cannot bring myself to play. I actually think I'd rather watch someone else play it, and then read the dialogues and quests when something like that comes along.

Yes, it's a definate to try. But the combat can be a c***. If you're no good with a weapon/low on fatigue, you'll miss ALOT.

As much I liked playing the seemingly never-ending Morrowind, there were some things I felt were missing...literally.

I hated that I could slash an enemy with a sword or fire an arrow at point blank range and I would miss! Damn I loved Oblivions more realistic hit detection. Though Oblivion didn't have levitation, I loved flying around in Morrowind spewing fire and lightning upon my enemies!

Anyway, Morrowind really gives you the feeling that you are some uberhero, when you smack daedroths down with one or two sword swings. Especially in the later levels. Oblivion was ridiculous on this front as I could be the god of cyrodill and still a couple of bandits with magical full glass armor almost kick my ass.

What I'm saying is that Morrowind definately had a good and immersive atmosphere in it, which Oblivion couldn't give.

Unfortunately, there was one little thing that almost ruined my enjoyment of Morrowind. Allow me to express it shortly:

CLIFF*******RACERS! (rage ensues)

Those gits were so annoying, I believe it spawned a number of mods that would let you drive them to extinction. Yay, over-hunting!

I remember playing Morrowind but I gave up within 2 hours for ome reason I can't remember. Should go back since everyone here says it's better than Oblivion.

One thing: Boots of blinding speed

Those were the most fun boots ever.
Oh fuck yes, those were brilliant ahahaha. And at the beginning when that dude falls out of the sky, and the scrolls were fortify acrobatics x1000 or something aye.

I beg to differ. Ever bought a scroll of Wind Walk? :)
Now that's the most fun item in the whole game. And the best/most fun way to get around too. Screw Stilt Striders, they're damn ugly, just get yourself a Wind Walk spell and you're off. Invisibility+Fly at an incredible speed, I used to buy a shitload of those scrolls just to run around and explore or hunt those annoying CLIFF RACERS.

Also, the reason Vvardenfell is better than Cyrodiil is because it's more varied. You don't have marshes, volcanoes, ashlands, savannahs, and rocky islands in Oblivion. Ooh, and I like Morrowind because it's so full of caves and places that 75% of people never find while playing. I spent literally hours just starting in Balmora and picking a route and going somewhere where I've never been before and finding some ordinary hut hidden in some mountains, and in that hut was the original manuscript of Saryoni's Sermons worth 50000 gold. And then later, finding a scamp called Creeper in Caldera who's like a mini black market and can actually buy insanely priced stuff off of you. It's fun because in other games every single cave and place is literally thrown in your face, with millions of NPC's asking "Have you been to the *insert place* yet?!?" or "You know, *insert place* is just nort of here, you can't miss it." and even "Here, I'll mark it on the map for you." There's no such bullshit in Morrowind. There you have a journal and you have to read your own directions. And for most caves, people don't even know they exist. For some reason, I love the fact that you can get lost.
And it's neat to find someone's tomb, finding a ton of crap inside, and if you're just lucky, some awesome piece of armor. And it was great that the game didn't automatically adjust the environment to your level, you could risk and venture into some high-level area, to get away with a special piece of armor, like some glove of strength +40 that I found in some volcano, or those Daedric boots I "borrowed" off a wealthy farmer in a far away city that he had just hanging there.

And I'll never forget when I first saw Vivec(city). I was all like.. whoaaah.

But seriously, Morrowind is not a game for everyone. It's graphically old, has a lot of bugs, but I never found them to bother me. I just played it with a lot of imagination, like when I was really high-leveled I tried taking off all of my heavy armor, and dumping all of my equipment on the floor and then proceeded to jump 40 feet into the air. I just naturally assumed that I could jump that high simply because I was just that awesome. I mean 100+hours of jumping around wearing armour crafted out of pure fuckig obsidian should enable you to jump over a goddamn house after ditching said armour.
Oh, and let's not forget that the game is essentially a game like GTA. Just set in a medieval setting and having a larger map and more hidden places.
At the end of the game (I've never actually finished it :) ) I really felt like I was some sort of super human. I could afford just about anything, slay just about any monster, do any quest really quickly due to all the loot I got over the game, and I didn't feel like I just threw away all those hours playing Morrowind, instead I felt like it was some trial of life and I beat it. So in other words, I felt like I beat the game by not beating the game but by just exploring and doing random quests and finding my own adventures, not having them spoonfed to me. And if you consider the fact that the game is insanely moddable... You have yourself the ultimate adventure.

I think it's obvious that Morrowind is one of the most fun games I've ever played, and I recommend it to everyone. Just don't expect the game to do everything for you, like all modern games. You still have to use some imagination, and a game should provide enough to stimulate your interest.
Also, I love this thread, and I'm glad there's a lot of people who think just like me, I'm not used to people liking Morrowind.

Really now, these news are most pleasing. I have not played Morrowind for years, maybe I should download some mods and go hunting for some mutant bats/birds. It might relieve some of my past traumas concerning those cliff racers.

Oh, the nightmares I had. Their ominous shrieks strike fear even in the kingdoms most powerful warriors...Run away, run away!

So "I" felt cheated in that I put a bunch of time in playing through the game a second time, doing the same stuff when I really didn't need to.

Overall the game has a ton of depth, and was probably one of the better RPG's that I have played. Sorry for being a whiny ***** about it.. =(
Interestingly, I never finished the game, but I've always felt like I've more than finished it. The ending was never all that appealing to me, though it's an interesting boss battle, but I felt that just all the adventuring was enough for me. I still have all my saves, and recalling my gameplay, I never really did do anything to progress through the main quest. I just ran around exploring caves and stealing shit from people's houses. Or waiting until nightfall and casting a 100% Chameleon spell and slaughtering everyone in the safety of their own houses. Just a small example of stuff I did.

You should post that as a review, but with some pictures and a bit more.

It would be awesome.
Thanks, I always like to write long post and just write everything I can remember about the subject. And I'm flattered you like it. And come to think of it, it's not my first post of that length about Morrowind, and I've always considered writing a review. Perhaps I will.
