Most of you seem to misinterpret the word 'iconic' (in this case, a weapon that represents gaming), and instead thinking of 'favorite'. So yeah, there really is just one choice: The BFG9000.
Close runner-up would be the Crowbar of Half-Life fame.

Dudes I can believe that the Redeemer from UT is not listed here. That was a cool weapon.

Also the thingy (forgot the actual name) from F.E.A.R. that evaporates flesh and turns people into skeletons. I really liked that weapon.

The BFG9000 is the most iconic video game weapon to the point that it's gone beyond just being a weapon from a game to a term used to describe other weapons in other games. It doesn't get much more iconic than that.

SOCOM from MGS4.
Railgun from....whoever thought of it first.
If I remember correctly, and I did play through the game twice, the SOCOM was not in MGS4. It was in MGS though. Just not part 4. He had the Operator as his standard pistol.
I found it lying around somewhere or unlocked after my first play through. Don't know which, but I have it in MGS4.

As for my own choice I'd say the shotgun in Doom. And by extension in every other fps ever. I don't think I've played a shooter without a shotgun since Wolfenstein 3d.

(Although I can't remember if there was one in Firewarrior. But it doesn't matter as that game was a pile of ass. I normally don't regret buying games, but shit. Also Driv3r.)

There are many good and well done, imaginitive weapons in the video game industry, but as far as iconic, that would have to be the BFG 9000. That's what comes to my mind as probably the most well-known weapon in gaming history.
