I have to say crowbar. I only played half-life a little bit (like 10 minutes) and when I saw the fullpage ad with just a crowbar, I knew it was HL2.

A lot of the other weapons are notable, innovative, or the name of the game. But the crowbar is truly iconic; it can substitute for the entire game as a symbol. No other weapon I can think of is so readily identified with a single game (or two, if you count the sequel). The lightsabre is definitely iconic of Star Wars, but that's not just a game: it's an entire franchise.

The Assault Rifle from Halo, the warthog from Halo. The gunblade from FFVIII. I can't think of any other iconic instruments of ultra violence at the moment though. In time some Fallout 3's stuff could be considered but it'stoo new for that.

If we use more realistic games there's always the M1 Garand, the M16, M4, etc.

Also, it makes sense for newer games like Halo or Half life to be mentioned. While most people might be able to recognize Pacman, Halo and the like have had WAY more publicity, and are far more widespread.

And the Wrench/Shock Plasmid combo in Bioshock. I must've completed the whole game using nothing but that almost.

Sure these are some great weapons, but when it comes to iconic, I can't help but think of the Doom shotgun, the R Type circle laser, that one weapon that everyone thinks of first when they think of a game or series.

I'd have to add HL's crowbar, sure the gravity gun was an awesome invention, but to me the humble crowbar says 'Half life' more.
